Video: 2024 Mini Cooper electric hatch, Countryman SUV in Australia

The first models in the next generation of Mini petrol and electric cars have arrived in Australia ahead of customer deliveries due next year.

The 2024 Mini Cooper electric hatch and 2024 Mini Countryman petrol SUV have toured Australia ahead the first customer deliveries due in the second half of next year.

Drive exclusively reported in August 2023 an electric Cooper hatch – and new petrol Countryman SUV – had been secretly brought to Australia for customer previews ahead of their unveiling at the Munich motor show in early September.

Now Drive has been given an early look at the two vehicles in Melbourne – click the video links above and below.

As previously reported, the line-up of the BMW-owned British small-car brand is undergoing its biggest shake-up in a decade.

The traditional three-door hatch will be formally known as Cooper globally – rather than the 'Hatch' name it wears today – and will be split in two.

There will be a new petrol-powered model on a revised version of the current model's decade-old underpinnings – while the electric version is all-new, built in China on a chassis developed as part of a joint venture with Chinese car giant Great Wall Motors (GWM).

The Countryman SUV has grown significantly, and is a twin of the new BMW X1 – offering a choice of petrol or electric power – while there will be a new, city-sized Aceman electric SUV on the Cooper Electric's platform, which will indirectly replace the Clubman wagon.

New five-door hatchback and two-door convertible models are also planned, but they will be petrol-only on the petrol three-door Cooper's underpinnings.
