Victorian Government announces road repair blitz for regional areas

After a year of extreme rain and flooding, damaged roads throughout regional Victoria will come in for major repairs.

The Victorian Government has announced a road maintenance blitz, with the majority of work being conducted in regional areas.

Roads in country areas have suffered the most damage, bearing the brunt of heavy rain and flooding over the past year.

The Victorian Government says the work will be conducted between now and June 2024, with crews inspecting and carrying out road repairs as winter conditions dry up.

The repair blitz is the first phase of a 10-year, $6.6 billion maintenance commitment, which the government says includes "future-proofing" local roads.

"We’ve already made record investments in repairing and maintaining our state’s roads – our new, long-term road maintenance plan will deliver even better-targeted works and improved outcomes for Victorians," Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said in a media statement.

"We know we are facing a significant and complex repair program after some of the worst floods in our state’s history – that’s why our plan is backed by a long-term funding commitment and data-driven plan to fix our roads."

The latest work comes after another 12-month blitz which included 370,000 potholes being patched and 21,000 signs repaired or replaced.
