Updated Tesla Model 3 imminent, as orders open overseas – report
Tesla showrooms in China have begun taking orders for the updated Tesla Model 3, which has reportedly commenced production ahead of its unveiling in the coming weeks.
It seems as if the 2024 Tesla Model 3 electric car will be launched any day now, with overseas reports suggesting orders have already begun to be taken unofficially by Chinese showrooms.
According to Chinese website IT Home, citing the newspaper China Securities Journal, Tesla is expected to unveil the facelifted Model 3 within the next fortnight.
It's also being reported that some Tesla showrooms in China have quietly begun taking reservations for the updated Model 3 – known by the codename 'Project Highland' – with buyers putting down a deposit of ¥1000 ($AU214).
According to Shanghai local and Tesla new-model tracker Chris Zheng, Tesla's factory in Shanghai began production of the Model 3 'Highland' on 14 August – with 7000 vehicles expected to roll off the line this month, and another 10,000 expected in September.
Despite Tesla having yet to make any announcement on the updated model, much of the car has already been leaked to the public.
The Model 3 is in line to receive a fresh new look, with slimmer, sharper LED headlights, minor bodywork changes, as well as a number of updates to the car's interior – all of which reportedly makes the vehicle cheaper to manufacture than the version currently on sale.

As reported by Drive in June, unconfirmed reports also suggest the entry-level Model 3 rear-wheel drive (RWD) will receive a bump in the battery size, increasing from 60kWh to 66kWh.
However, the same reports claim Tesla will be adopting a new type of lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) battery from Chinese battery giant CATL, which are more energy dense than the current lithium iron phosphate batteries found in the current Model 3 RWD.
While yet to be verified, this points to a potential driving range of approximately 621 kilometres for the entry-level Model 3.
