The last of Australia’s car production pins fell this week, with confirmation that Toyota will exit Australian manufacturing in 2017.
The local carmaker said the decision was based in part on the high Australian dollar, along with the high cost of manufacturing and low economies of scale for its local supplier base.
Toyota now joins Ford and Holden in announcing an end to their local manufacturing operations.
The 2014 Kia Soul arrived in local showrooms this week, priced from $23,990 plus on-roads for the six-speed manual version.
A six-speed auto is also available, priced from $25,990 plus on-roads, and all Souls in Australia will feature the same 2.0 litre petrol engine, making 113kW and 191Nm.
Kia has set realistic goals for the 2014 Soul, with sales of around 400 per year expected, 90 percent of which will be automatics.
