Q&A: Noisy Camry engine

Terry wants to know if he should be concerned about the rattle from his engine

Question: I have recently purchased a second hand low kilometre 2012 Toyota Camry from auction. On start up when the engine is cold there is a rattle from the engine that lasts at least 10 seconds, but when it's warm there is no noise when re-started. Any ideas as to what the noise could be? And is it a problem or a characteristic?

Thanks, Terry.

Answer: The 2012 (ACV50R) Toyota Camry has a 2.5-litre four cylinder engine - a very reliable motor - but the rattle you are describing is found in some of these engines. The noise is coming from the engine timing chain, caused by the chain tensioner and guides. Toyota is aware of the problem and released a service bulletin fix to its dealer network for vehicles affected. The rectification sees a revised tensioner and guides fitted to fix the issue, which can be replaced in a day. Get your Camry into a dealer before the warranty expires to have this issue resolved. If it has run out in the last few weeks have the dealer request warranty assistance from Toyota.
