Nissan Micra to go electric with Renault technology, previewed by hot-hatch concept

A new Nissan electric concept car has previewed the next-generation Micra city car, due to adopt battery power when it arrives in Europe in 2025.

Nissan 20-23 Concept

The future of the Nissan Micra city car in Europe has been locked in as an electric car after the pint-sized model was previewed by a racing-inspired concept overnight.

The Nissan 20-23 Concept is a wild racing-inspired interpretation of the next-generation Micra city hatch due in European showrooms in 2024 or 2025, as a twin-under-the-skin of the reborn, battery-powered Renault 5.

While the 20-23 Concept adopts a number of Nissan’s current design cues – such as its split-’O’ shaped lights – the showroom Micra is expected to be built by Renault in France.

As recently reported, the Renault 5 – upon which the new Nissan Micra will reportedly be based – is expected to be priced from about €25,000 ($AU41,000) when it rolls out to European showrooms in 2024.

The current, petrol-powered Micra sold in Europe and other markets is a twin under the skin of the previous Renault Clio, built in Europe by the French car giant.

The last Nissan Micra sold in Australia was the previous model – introduced in 2010, and built in India by Nissan – which was axed from Australian showrooms in 2016, as the car-maker instead focused on the booming SUV market.

There had long been suggestions the European-built Micra would be sold in Australia – and Nissan Australia expressed interest in the vehicle – but plans never came to fruition.

Renault Australia says the Renault 5 is on its wish list for Australia – but it is not clear whether the electric Nissan Micra will be sold locally.

The battery-powered Nissan Micra will be one of the brand’s 19 electric cars planned to launch by 2030.
