New Ford Ranger FX4 revealed

Blue oval toughens up its Ranger workhorse ute.

Ford has sent its Ranger XLT to the gym.

The blue oval's new FX4 special edition is based on the XLT double cab model, which sits underneath the range-topping Wildtrak.

Pricing for the Ford Ranger FX4 starts from $58,915 before on-road costs in manual guise and $61,115 when equipped with an automatic transmission, which represents a $3500 price increase over the standard XLT models.

However, that extra cash gets some more bling to beef up its appearance in the same mold as the Wildtrak and includes 18-inch grey alloy wheels, black roof rails, bonnet, tailgate, sports bar, rear bumper, side steps and door handles and side decals with FX4 branding.

On the inside, the special edition scores FX4 branded leather accented seats.

"We developed the Ranger FX4 for our customers that are a bit bolder than most and make use of the towing and payload capabilities of the Ranger XLT," said Ford Australia's President and CEO, Graeme Whickman.

The FX4 is powered by the same five-cylinder 3.2-litre turbodiesel engine that produces 147kW and 470Nm and is mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed auto.
