MG Australia prices rise by up to $1700

As warned four months ago, prices across nearly all MG cars in Australia have risen – pushing the top-selling MG 3 city car above $20,000 drive-away for the first time.

MG Australia has increased prices across all but one model it sells by between $500 and $1700 – pushing a number of models above key price barriers for the first time.

The latest round of price rises applies to 2022-built (Model Year 2022) stock now in MG showrooms around the country, and affects all models bar the ZS EV electric car – an updated version of which is due in showrooms this August.

These new price rises on 2022 models were first announced in February, with MG at the time stating "2022-built vehicles will be adjusted by between $1000 and $2000" – coinciding with the announcement of $500 to $1000 increases on Model Year 2021 vehicles.

It was thought at the time the 2022 price rises could be in addition to the 2021 increases – however, based on prices published this month, it now appears the "$1000 to $2000" figure was inclusive of the $500 to $1000 price increases applied to MY21 models (depending on model variant).

The greatest increase – $2700 between January 2022 MY21 and June 2022 MY22 pricing, or $1700 for MY22 – has been applied to the HS Plus EV Essence plug-in hybrid, which has risen from $47,990 to $50,690 drive-away.

However, $2000 of this is attributed to "cost increases in raw materials and transport logistics", per MG's statement in February – with the remaining $700 due to the inclusion of metallic paint in the base price.

Clipper Blue, the sole no-cost colour, has been deleted for 2022 – meaning all buyers must pay an extra $700 for one of the three, all-metallic colours still available: Sterling Silver, Diamond Red and New Pearl White.

The cheaper HS Plus EV Excite is also up $700 due to the inclusion of metallic paint as standard. MG Australia is "always evaluating demand and may offer a non-metallic colour in the future depending on customer interest," a spokesperson told Drive.

The rest of the HS medium SUV range has been hit with a $1000 price rise – after avoiding any hikes to MY21 vehicles in February 2022 – pushing the entry-level HS Core over $30,000 drive-away for the first time, to $30,990.

The MG 3 city car range is up $500 across the range for a second time – nudging the Excite flagship over $20,000 for the first time – while the entire ZS and ZST petrol SUV range have increased by $500 for 2022 stock.

The MG ZS EV electric SUV is unaffected, and will be priced from $46,990 to $49,990 drive-away – as announced in March – when local deliveries commence in August.

After month after month of rising sales, MG sales hit a bump in the road last month, posting the company's first month-to-month decrease of the year – as it is hit for the first time by the stock and part shortages affecting most other new-car brands.

However, nearly 7000 cars are due to arrive in July – possibly spread across Australia and New Zealand – and waiting times are estimated at four to eight weeks, compared to three to 12 months for most other brands.
