Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG S price watch

Swoopy four-door Coupe and Shooting Brake models gain potent 5.5-litre turbo V8.

Mercedes-Benz has added a pair of potent CLS models to its lineup.

The new CLS 63 AMG S models are powered by the same 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 engine as is seen in the new E63 AMG S, which produces 430kW and 800Nm of torque.

Priced at $262,645 plus on-road costs for the four-door Coupe model and $265,145 plus costs for the Shooting Brake, the new pairing will offer buyers an alternative to the Audi RS6 Avant, Jaguar XFR-S, BMW M5 and, to a lesser extent, the bolshy HSV Gen-F GTS.

Mercedes-Benz claims the four-door Coupe model can sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds, while the Shooting Brake is just a fraction slower, with a 4.2s claimed time. It has a limited top speed of 250km/h, but buyers can opt for that to be changed to 300km/h.

Fuel use is rated at 10.0L/100km for the Coupe and 10.3L for the Shooting Brake.

Standard equipment for both models includes plenty of AMG kit, such as 19-inch wheels, sports seats, sports exhaust and body kit, as well as a Harman Kardon stereo system. Radar cruise control, blind spot assistance and lane keeping assistance are all standard.
