Report of a smaller twin to Mercedes-Benz' SLS AMG have been circulating since the hero car's unveiling in 2009, pointing to a new and more affordable assault on the super-sports category.
Now, a new report in Britain's Auto Express claims the car has been given a green light and a name: SLC.
The magazine quotes design boss Gorden Wagener, who it says confirmed the SLC name on the sidelines of this week's Beijing Auto Show.
Wagener offered no other details, but there has been no shortage of speculation over the past three years on the car's powertrain.
With the Porsche 911 and Aston's V8 Vantage as its obvious rivals, the new car will reportedly derive power from a new 4.0 litre V8 engine in its top-shelf form, while a V6 - borrowed from the SLK roadster - is also expected.
As a more affordable alternative to the hero SLS, the SLC coupe will likely do away with the gullwing doors.
The report adds that Wagener also confirmed the previously-rumoured CLA name for the production version of the Concept Style Coupe revealed this month.
The CLA is expected to enter production towards the end of next year, with the SLC reportedly pegged for a mid-2014 unveiling.
