McLaren P1 GTR revealed

Formula One constructor sets a high goal for its racetrack-only P1 GTR.

This is the car McLaren claims will soon become the “best driver’s car in the world” - the P1 GTR.

Revealed over the weekend at an exclusive event at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California, this “design concept” showcases just how far McLaren is willing to go to create the ultimate track car.

The road-going P1 is already one of the wildest cars in the world but the GTR pushes the boundaries even further. With no need to comply with any road-going legal constraints or abide by any racing rules the GTR takes everything to extremes.

In addition to the aggressive, racing-style bodywork (that includes a new aerodynamic front bumper, massive rear wing and huge rear diffuser) the P1 GTR gets racing-style slick tyres, a fixed ride height, more power and a Formula One-style DRS (Drag Reduction System).

The hybrid powertrain, which includes a 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 petrol engine and electric motor,  has been re-worked to now produce 735kW (986hp).

The exhaust has been changed to create even more aural appeal. The single exhaust pipe has been replaced by a pair of straight cut titanium exhaust exits.

To help get all that power get to the track the GTR rides on specially-developed Pirelli slick tyres that measure 10.5-inches wide at the front and 13-inches at the rear. Both are fitted to 19-inch racing-style alloy wheels with a central locking wheel nut.

The racing makeover even extends as far as having an on-board air-jack system fitted to the P1 GTR to allow for easier, faster tyre changes.

The aerodynamics have been carefully managed to ensure optimum airflow across and underneath the car for maximum downforce and minimum drag. The DRS system reduces the angle of the rear wing on the straight for more top speed but reverts to normal for the corners for faster cornering.

With an expected price tag of more than $3.5 million McLaren is throwing in more than just the car. Each owner will have a custom developed training program that will include specialist driver training by McLaren’s team of racing drivers and time on the company’s high-tech simulator.

McLaren Special Operations will maintain and run the cars for the owners and will send dedicated race engineers and test drivers to track events to help owners get the most performance out of the car.
