Mazda recalls popular model

Japanese manufacturer to repair 9000 cars.

Mazda has announced a recall of its popular Mazda6 sedan and wagon.

Approximately 9000 vehicles - almost every current model car sold - require a software update due to safety concerns.

The issue could see cars run out of power in rare circumstances.

A spokesman for the brand says driving the car in heavy rain or through deep puddles could stop the battery from charging, eventually bringing the car to a halt.

Mazda spokesman Steve Maciver says the issue has not occurred in Australia, and that the problem has a simple fix.

“It’s not a major repair it’s a simple software flash to the powertrain control module,” he says.

“What we’re asking customers to do is to take their cars into the nearest Mazda dealer.

"It’s a very simple software upgrade.”

This is the second recall Mazda has issued for its mid-sized car.

The manufacturer recalled 1500 Australian examples of the Mazda6 in March 2013 after electrical components sparked two fires in Australian cars.

Both recalls have been attached to the Mazda6’s innovative electrical system which saves fuel by harvesting electricity from braking energy.
