Ford backs kart series

Ford Racing is to expand its motorsport involvement next year by conducting a single make kart series in Australia.

To be called the Ford Rotax Challenge, it has been confirmed for an initial three years, beginning in 2000.

The series will be run in conjunction with leading Australian kart manufacturer, Drew Price Engineering, Price having at one stage been a strong class competitor (when there were such things) in touring car racing, as well as being a leading kart racer.

"This year Ford has spoken of its long term plans to invest in the future of motorsport in Australia, and now we are beginning to make that investment," said Ford Racing general manager, Howard Marsden.

The Challenge will be the Australian extension of the international Rotax Formula and karts will be powered by a sealed Rotax engine, Bridgestone control tyres and a Drew Price Engineering-prepared control chassis.

The minimum age of entry is 16 years and the top four drivers next year - from a field restricted to 28 competitors - will be taken with their race engineers to the Caribbean to compete in the Rotax Max World Challenge final against 80 of the world's most promising young drivers.

One driver will also be selected to take part in a development program for Formula Ford.

The entry fee is $15,000 and includes a kart with engine, technical support, race apparel, fuel, oil, chains, tyres and engine service.

Drivers will keep their karts at the end of the season.
