Dodge Hornet to be based on Alfa Romeo Tonale SUV – report
A new baby SUV from Dodge could borrow its underpinnings from the company's Italian cousin, according to fresh rumours.
Dodge is looking to base its next small SUV on Alfa Romeo architecture.
The Dodge Hornet, as it's expected to be called, will be based on the upcoming Alfa Romeo Tonale, according to a report published by Passione Auto Italiane.
The Hornet will help fill out the US car brand's modest line-up, which currently consists of the Durango SUV, Charger sedan, and Challenger coupe.
As part of the newly-formed Stellantis automotive group, the Alfa Romeo Tonale is expected to share its platform (and production) with the Jeep Renegade and Compass, as well as the Dodge Hornet.
Reports in April 2021 stated the baby SUV had been pushed back to early 2022, following demands from Alfa Romeo's new CEO Jean-Phillippe Imparato to improve performance from the flagship Tonale plug-in hybrid model.
While yet to be confirmed, the rumours suggest the Dodge Hornet – a name with roots back to a 2006 concept car – will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
