Video: Oddball micro-car crashes on famous Monaco F1 corner

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes – turns out physics works on tiny electric cars too.

In an outcome which will surprise no one, a series of videos shared online show a Citroen Ami electric micro-car speeding into – then rolling over – at the slowest corner on the Formula One circuit in Monte Carlo.

The clip shows the driver of the tiny Citroen first attempt the corner – formally known as the Grand Hotel (Fairmont) Hairpin – at speed heading uphill, but when it returns with gravity providing an extra push, the oddball electric micro-car tips over while attempting to round the bend.

Pedestrians on the footpath are sent scrambling as the Citroen Ami flips and then slides into the protective bollards and comes to rest on its side.

Given the crash has been captured from a number of different angles (including inside the car), we can assume a ‘dramatic’ cornering result was intended, but perhaps not expected to end this way.

The Citroen Ami is technically classed as a quadricycle, allowing teenagers as young as 14 years old to drive it in France – provided they have been issued the relevant licence.

The two-seat electric micro-car has a 1728mm wheelbase and 2410mm overall length. For context, the Suzuki Jimny has the shortest wheelbase of any car on sale in Australia, and at 2250mm, it’s nearly the length of the Ami in its entirety.

In fact the Ami is so small that it could fit between the wheels on the diminutive Suzuki Ignis (2435mm wheelbase).

Riding on 155mm wide, 14-inch diameter wheels – and only weighing 485kg (with the 5.5kWh battery) – the Ami isn’t exactly designed to take corners at pace, and when you consider the car’s top-speed is limited to 45km/h, this 'demonstration' was never going to end well.
