2024 Toyota Prado to be unveiled next week, new teasers released

The first new Toyota LandCruiser Prado in 14 years will be unveiled in a week from now, with four-cylinder diesel power – and a different look depending on where you live.

The covers will be lifted off the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser Prado next Wednesday 2 August 2023, ahead of first Australian showroom arrivals expected mid next year.

Teaser images released by Toyota in the US, Europe, Japan and Australia overnight showcase the retro 1980s styling cues the new Prado will draw in certain markets.

As exclusively reported by Drive, there is expected to be at least two front-end designs for the new Prado: one 'regular' design for Australia and Japan, among other markets, and one retro-inspired look aimed at the US, and as it now appears, Europe.

The Prado will be a twin of the latest Lexus GX luxury four-wheel-drive – coming to Australia early next year – differentiated through unique front and rear fascias, and new interiors with fewer luxury features in the Toyota.

Drive first reported earlier this month that three engines are slated for the Toyota Prado in some markets: a familiar 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder, a base 2.7-litre non-turbo petrol four-cylinder, and a 2.4-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder hybrid.

The hybrid is expected to be the only choice in the US. Contrary to some reports out of Japan, it is believed there are no plans for a V6 in the new Toyota, with petrol or diesel power.

The Australia and Japan-bound front end appears to use less matte black trim – and based on previous reporting, it is tipped to use a 'T' badge on the grille instead of the 'TOYOTA' script of the US and European version.

The headlights on both models appear to be the same, with three LED beams per headlight, and horizontal running lights. It is unclear if the circular LandCruiser 70 Series-inspired light design previously expected for the retro-styled US model will be available.

At the rear, the Lexus GX's full-width LED tail-light bar is replaced by standalone light clusters inspired by the Toyota Compact Cruiser electric concept of 2021, connected by body-coloured trim and black 'TOYOTA' and 'LAND CRUISER' badging.

The Japanese teaser provides a glimpse at the new car's interior, showing buttons and switches for its locking rear differential, electric parking brake, and three off-road modes: 'H4F', 'H4L' and 'L4L'.

Toyota in all international markets has referred to the vehicle in teaser posts simply as the 'Land Cruiser' – including a Twitter post by Toyota Australia – without mention of the Prado suffix used in Australia, Japan and many other markets.

It follows reports the Prado will be renamed to 'LandCruiser 250 Series' in Japan for its new generation, to sit below the full-size 300 Series.

While the Toyota Australia social-media post indicates the Prado name could be dropped locally as well, it is worth noting the Twitter post includes a space between Land and Cruiser – which Toyota does not use in its marketing materials for any current LandCruiser model.

It suggests the Twitter caption may have been copied from a media announcement published by Toyota head office in Japan – rather than foreshadowing the axing of the Prado name. However this is yet to be confirmed.

The 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 'Prado' is due to be unveiled at 11:00am on Wednesday 2 August 2023 – with first Australian arrivals expected next year. Stay tuned to Drive for all the latest details.
