2024 Mitsubishi Triton ute spied in production body
The new-generation Triton has been spotted testing in Europe, and it's set to adopt Mitsubishi's latest design language.
The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton has been caught on camera by Drive’s European spy photographers, with camouflage hiding the ute’s new body.
While the new-generation Triton was first spied in January, Mitsubishi engineers had used the current model’s body – complete with Mirage headlights – to help keep it disguised, making this the first time we've seen the vehicle's upcoming look.
The new ute will adopt Mitsubishi’s current front-end design language, complete with daytime-running lights just below the clamshell bonnet shut line, while the headlights will be in separate units bordered by tapered ‘eyebrows’ in chrome – giving it a similar look to the Eclipse Cross, Pajero Sport, and Outlander.
While the grille is a straight-forward rectangular shape, we can see below the Mitsubishi badge is a sensor used for radar cruise control and active safety systems.
As part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, the Triton platform will also form the basis for the next-generation Nissan Navara, and is expected to eventually be adopted by Renault as its Alaskan ute, sold in some Latin American and European markets.
Thanks to previous prototype vehicles using the current model’s body, we know the next Triton will adopt a longer wheelbase, together with a wider wheel track, all of which will improve road handling and increase cabin space and storage capacity.
There’s no word yet on engines, but a senior manager at Mitsubishi revealed in September 2021 the Triton would be offered with some kind of electrification – with a plug-in hybrid petrol powertrain the best bet, given the company’s extensive use of the technology in the Outlander and Eclipse Cross.
At this stage, the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton is on track to be revealed in the first half of 2023, with the first vehicles expected to hit showrooms late in the year.
