2023 MG 4 electric car on track for Australia early next year
The local division of Chinese car maker MG has confirmed its electric Corolla-sized hatchback is due on sale in Australia in early 2023.
MG Motor Australia has confirmed its all-new electric hatchback, the 2023 MG 4, is on track to arrive in Australia in the first half of next year.
Speaking to assembled media at the launch of the facelifted MG ZS EV in Sydney yesterday, Giles Belcher, MG Motor Australia’s boss of Sales and Marketing said, “we can confirm MG 4 is slated for launch in H1 [the first half of next year]”.
MG had previously said it was "reviewing" the model for a launch in the first half of 2023 – however it had not officially locked in the launch timing (pending no further delays).
The electric hatchback has already been caught on camera in Australia, wrapped in camouflage. The model was recently approved for sale in Australia following its Australian Design Rules certification last week.
Pricing for the Corolla-sized hatchback is still to be confirmed for Australia, but using UK pricing as a guide, the entry-level model with a driving range claim of 350km, could be priced at around $40,000 drive-away, estimates suggest.
A flagship MG 4, with a claimed driving range of around 450km, could sit at around $50,000 drive-away.
The MG 4 is available in the UK with 50.8kWh and 61.7kWh battery packs, good for the 350km and 452km driving range claims above – and mated to 125kW and 150kW electric motors respectively, powering the rear wheels for 0-100km/h times of 7.7 to 7.9 seconds.
China and the UK are also set to receive a high-performance MG 4, a dual-motor, all-wheel drive variant with outputs of 330kW and 600Nm and a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.8 seconds.
There is no word on whether Australia will also get the high-performance variant, however it appears likely.
