2023 Lamborghini Urus S revealed
The Lamborghini Urus family has gained a third member, the S – which replaces the regular Urus, with power and styling upgrades from the hero Performante.
The 2023 Lamborghini Urus S has been revealed, ahead of European deliveries likely to begin late this year, or early next year – though Australian details are yet to be locked in.
The Urus S represents the mid-life update for Lamborghini's first SUV, succeeding the original Urus launched in 2017 – and positioned below the flagship Urus Performante revealed last month.
It may become one of, if not the last pure petrol-powered Urus variant to be launched, as Lamborghini will switch its entire model range to plug-in hybrid power by the end of 2024 – including its popular SUV.
Powering the Urus S is the same 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 as other variants, developing 490kW and 850Nm (from 2300-6000rpm) – matching the Performante, with the same tuning of its engine and gearbox.
It sends power to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, good for a 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.5 seconds, 0-200km/h in 12.5 seconds, and a top speed of 305km/h – 0.2s, 1.0s and 1km/h slower than the Performante respectively.
Compared to the standard Urus it replaces, the S is 12kW more powerful (but identical on torque), 0.1-second quicker to 100km/h, 0.2s quicker to 200km/h, and matched in top speed.
Lamborghini quotes a 3.3-second 0-100km/h time for the Performante (0.3s quicker than the regular Urus), an 11.5-second 0-200km/h time (1.2s faster), and a 306km/h top speed (1km/h higher).
Lamborghini claims a 100km/h to zero braking distance of 33.7m, and a weight to power ratio of 3.3kg per horsepower (4.49kg/kW) – compared to 32.9m and 3.23kg/hp (4.39kg/kW) for the Performante.
Highlights of the new variant include a retuned exhaust system, adaptive air suspension, and seven drive modes: Strada (road), Sport, Corsa (track), Ego, Terra (dirt), Neve (snow) and Sabbia (sand).
The Urus S shares a number of exterior body parts with the Performante, including its front and rear bumpers, four exhaust outlets, vented bonnet (available with carbon-fibre vents as an option), and available carbon-fibre roof.
Unique design cues include a matte black stainless steel front skid plate, new wheel designs between 21 and 23 inches in diameter, and the wheel arches from the standard Urus (without the Performante's carbon-fibre flares).
Inside, buyers can choose from 'Sportivo' and 'Sophisticated' two-tone interior colour schemes, with different contrasting trim and stitching choices, – including Blu Leandro (blue), Verde Aura (green), tan, cream, brown and black for the Sophisticated option.
Connectivity features on offer include satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a digital car key feature.
The 2023 Lamborghini Urus S will open for orders in Europe priced from €195,538 ($AU291,900) before taxes – which compares to €218,487 ($AU326,550) before taxes in Europe, or $465,876 plus on-road costs in Australia for the Urus Performante.
Australian launch details are still to be confirmed.
