2023 BMW X1 price and specs

The 2023 BMW X1 small SUV will launch in Australia with a starting price $6000 higher than its predecessor – but there's more standard equipment than before.

The new X1 range is due in Australian BMW showrooms in late 2022 in a choice of two variants, priced from $53,900 plus on-road costs for the sDrive18i – up $6000 over the outgoing sDrive18i ($47,900 plus on-road costs, about $54,000 drive-away).

Buyers looking for all-wheel drive (AWD) can opt for the xDrive20i, priced from $65,900 plus on-road costs – down up on the last AWD X1 sold in Australia, the xDrive25i, with a $66,900 plus on-roads sticker (though this model was more potent).

While prices are up, standard equipment is too, with both models sharing dual interior screens, a head-up display, adaptive LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, power tailgate and a full advanced safety suite.

Whereas the outgoing X1 made do with a small 5.7-inch instrument display and an ageing 8.8-inch central touchscreen (with iDrive 6 software), the new model gains a 10.7-inch iDrive 8 touchscreen and a fully-digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster.

sDrive18i buyers get 18-inch wheels and Sensatec leather-like synthetic upholstery, while those that step up to the xDrive20i score 19-inch wheels and heated seats (plus more power and all-wheel drive).

The xDrive20i has no direct predecessor – a front-wheel-drive sDrive20i could previously be had for $56,900 plus on-road costs, while an xDrive25i all-wheel-drive variant in 2021 was $66,900.

The new X1 will debut 'feature on demand' subscription services for the BMW brand in Australia, with buyers able to pay a monthly fee (or buy a plan) to get heated steering wheels in both models, or heated front seats in the sDrive18i, after purchase.

It means all X1 models come with the hardware required for seat and steering wheel heating – but to unlock it, buyers will need to pay more via the BMW ConnectedDrive online store.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed – though details published early on BMW's website suggests heated seats will cost $29 per month, while a heated steering wheel will be $19/month. Click here for more details.

Information supplied to dealers suggests some features – specifically hands-free functionality for the power tailgate, or electric front-seat lumbar – may not be available due to the semiconductor shortage. Check with your BMW dealer when ordering for more information.

Powering the entry-level sDrive18i is a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder sending 115kW and 230Nm to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for a 9.0-second 0-100km/h time.

Meanwhile, the xDrive20i gains a 2.0-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder developing 150kW and 300Nm, sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The claimed 0-100km/h time is 7.4 seconds.

Due in early 2023 is the all-electric iX1 (above), set to launch in dual-motor xDrive30 form with up to 230kW/494Nm, and 438km of claimed driving range from a 64.7kWh battery pack.

Across the petrol range, metallic paint costs $1800, while the BMW Individual Storm Bay finish costs $1800. Opt for the Enhancement Package and metallic colours are free, while the Storm Bay paint's price is cut to $700.
