2022 Toyota Tundra pick-up teased, could use LandCruiser’s V6 engine
The new-generation full-size American pick-up from Toyota is on its way.
A teaser image of the 2022 Toyota Tundra pick-up has been released overnight.
Toyota showed off a shadowy image of the new Tundra ute, no doubt in an effort to steal some thunder away from the Ford F-150 Lightning – the Blue Oval's new electric pick-up, which was driven by President Joe Biden yesterday ahead of its official unveiling.
While the Japanese car maker has yet to release details on its upcoming full-size American pick-up, rumours have suggested its range of petrol V8 engines will be dropped in favour of a twin-turbo hybrid V6 engine – almost certainly the same powertrain coming in the 2022 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series.
Given those industry whispers, it's likely Toyota will adopt the same blueprint as the current Tundra – cherry-picking components from its international four-wheel-drive catalogue, but ensuring the vehicle is its own unique American model.
Prototypes undergoing testing in the US have shown the new Tundra will be offered with coil-spring rear suspension, rather than leaf springs.
As the Tundra was never built from the factory in right-hand drive, the ute wasn't offered in Australian dealerships. However, a number of local importing companies do offer aftermarket right-hand-drive conversions for the Tundra for those wanting something a little more unique than the Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado, or the Ford F-150.
