2022 Maserati Grecale prototype crashes into pole during testing

The trident brand's upcoming SUV met its match overnight in Italy, coming off worst in a head-on collision with a lamp post.

A prototype of the upcoming 2022 Maserati Grecale mid-size SUV has crashed during on-road testing in Italy, just days after the model’s unveiling was pushed back.

As first reported by La Repubblica and Instagram photographer wilcoblok, the incident occurred at a roundabout at the Piazza Polonia in the northern city of Turin overnight.

A Ford was also reportedly involved in the crash, however no one was seriously injured. It’s unclear if the incident will impact the all-new vehicle’s development schedule.

After initially promising a reveal on 16 November 2021, last week Maserati announced the Grecale's reveal had been delayed until the northern spring of 2022 (March to May) due to “interruptions in the supply chains for the key components necessary to complete the … process.”

“Dates are yet to be finalised; however, the new model will likely arrive in local showrooms during the second of next year," a spokesperson for Ateco, Maserati's Australian importer, told Drive in recent days.

Last month a variety of uncamouflaged pre-production Grecale parts were leaked online. You can read that story in full here.

Engine options and performance specifications have not yet been announced. However, industry rumours suggest a 2.0-litre mild-hybrid turbocharged petrol four-cylinder will be offered in entry-level variants.

Range-topping Trofeo models will likely be powered by a Alfa Romeo-derived 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, or a detuned 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 from the MC20 supercar.

Australian pricing is yet to be be finalised. The model will almost certainly slot under the larger $127,000 (before on-road costs) Maserati Levante SUV, which is currently the brand's best selling model.
