2022 Jeep new cars

Jeep hasn't had a true seven-seat four-wheel-drive in its lineup since the Commander of the 2000s, which limits the brand from competing directly with the likes of the Nissan Patrol, Toyota LandCruiser and Land Rover Discovery.

However, this is all set to change with the introduction of the next-generation 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Jeep is clearly keen to plug that seven-seat gap, because the first model to hit the Australian market will be the longer three-row Grand Cherokee L. This will be followed by the two-row Grand Cherokee, which will finally put the current model (which has been available since 2011) out to pasture.

This is an all-new Grand Cherokee, using a platform believed to be similar to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Maserati Grecale luxury SUVs.

Going against the grain of the segment – especially in Australia –, the new Grand Cherokee won't be available with diesel power. It will instead get the familiar 3.6-litre 'Pentastar' petrol V6, which makes 216kW and 350Nm in the US.

Australia-specific engine details are yet to be divulged, but Drive understands that V8 options are in the future pipeline – with a plug-in hybrid version of the two-row Grand Cherokee set for launch in the second half of the year. Government filings suggest the petrol V6 could be the sole petrol-only option at launch.
