2021 Toyota Yaris Cross earns five-star safety rating
Toyota’s pint-size city SUV has earned top marks in the latest round of crash tests.
The 2021 Toyota Yaris Cross city SUV has been awarded five stars for crash safety following a series of tests in Australia and Europe – with right- and left-hand-drive vehicles.
Most testing was conducted in Australia – including an assessment of crash-avoidance technology.
Although the Toyota Yaris Cross city SUV shares much of its DNA with the Toyota Yaris city hatch, it underwent a full round of testing to establish a five-star result in its own right.
The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) noted the Toyota Yaris Cross achieved “maximum points for its protection of adult occupants in the side impact, oblique pole and whiplash tests.”
The ANCAP report said: “The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal offset (mobile oncoming barrier) test. Dummy readings indicated marginal protection for the driver’s chest and legs.
“Protection provided for the front passenger dummy was adequate for the neck and marginal for the legs.
“The front structure of the Toyota Yaris Cross presented a low risk to the occupants of an oncoming vehicle in this test (which evaluates vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility).
“Occupant-to-occupant protection was also good, with the Yaris Cross fitted as standard with dual centre airbags between the front seats to minimise potential head injury in side impact crashes,” ANCAP reported.
Furthermore, the protection provided by the Yaris Cross to pedestrians, if struck, was good.
After testing crash avoidance technology, ANCAP said the ability of the Toyota Yaris Cross to “actively avoid collisions with pedestrians through its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system also scored well in forward-travel test scenarios.”
