It’s a summer day and you stroll in to the local gelato bar for a cool, refreshing treat. In your over zealous haste you mix in a few too many varieties and once outside, the blistering sun has its way with your frozen scoops. The ensuing creation of molten traditional and contemporary flavours creates an odd tasting combination which now doesn’t seem quite right - this is how the 9-3 feels to me.

Say what you want, but the Saab 9-3 convertible is one the best known convertibles on Australian roads today. After all, it has been here for around ten years and there is something special about it that sets it apart from the rest.

Over the last decade, however, things have gotten a little confusing. There are currently 16 different variations of the 9-3 convertible available in Australia. Your choices range from a 2.0-litre turbo, the same 2.0-litre turbo with more power, a 2.0-litre turbo biopower or a 1.9-litre turbo diesel (all available in auto/man and linear or vector trim) as well as the range topping 2.8-litre 9-3 Aero.

Saab ‘Move Your Mind’ cold room

Generating publicity for a car company can be quite expensive, they can spend hundreds of millions of dollars branding their slogan (think “Oh what a feeling” and “zoom zoom zoom”), or if money is an issue, they can recreate their cars from ice.

I am sitting in my Ikea chair, writing a review on a Swedish car - it’s not everyday I can truthfully write that in a sentence.

I like Saab, in the same way I like Mitsubishi and Mercedes-Benz. They have all had their history in making things that fly, and if you can safely make a few thousand pieces of metal fly through the air at hundreds of kilometres an hour, you can make a car.
