The biggest dual-cab ute tray you can buy in 2022

We compare eight of the country's most popular dual-cab utes to find which one has the biggest booty.

We all know how massive the dual-cab ute market has become for the Australian new car market, and have seen the use case of the light commercial vehicle expand to include lifestyle-oriented buyers too. No longer is a ute merely a workhorse, it needs to do more.

However, big loadspace still remains a key part of a dual-cab's remit, and can even mean the difference between selecting one ute option over the other. Not only is it a game of measurements, but a key consideration is what tonneau is protecting the items inside the tray.

On our latest Dual-Cab Ute Megatest, we had the chance to sit together eight of the country's favourite ute options. This allowed us to directly compare myriad ute aspects (which you can read about in detail here), but this article concerns tub space. We gathered tray measurements including tub length, width and height, along with the tailgate loading height.

Here are the top three most spacious utes in terms of tub space. See the table below for the full results.

First: Ssangyong Musso

With such gargantuan exterior dimensions, it’s little wonder the Ssangyong Musso boasts the biggest tub of all. Measuring 1625mm long, 1612mm wide, and 578mm high, the Musso’s tray is incredibly spacious in XLV specification and stands ready to load 880kg.

Second: GWM Ute

Where the Ssangyong before scored points for its outright length, the GWM’s tub is wider than just about all other utes on sale. Measuring 1561mm long, 1614mm wide, and 563mm high, the GWM’s tub is the second most spacious in our Dual-Cab Ute Megatest.

Third: Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger contains a big tub-lined tray with measurments totalling 1480mm long, 1528mm wide, and 533mm tall. However, the story doesn’t stop there as the Wildtrak specification comes equipped with a remote-activated roller shutter, lightweight tailgate, and a tub step to make getting inside the tray that much easier.
