This is officially the busiest intersection in Melbourne

If you've ever found yourself stuck at this particular crossroads just outside of Melbourne's CBD, know you're not alone.

Almost 10 million trips are made every weekday across metro Melbourne, but which intersection sees the most traffic?

While everyone has a different opinion on the city's busiest road (typically inspired by the drudgery of their own daily commute), the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning has given Drive the definitive data to officially identify Melbourne's busiest junction.

And the winner is...  the intersection at Hoddle Steet and Victoria Parade in Collingwood!

According to the Department's analysis of weekday traffic from February to April 2023, the Hoddle/Victoria intersection attracts approximately 95,000 vehicles per day.

While this Collingwood hotspot is the busiest based on sheer volume, another intersection in Melbourne's CBD takes the title for being the most congested.

According to current data, the section of road that sees the lowest speed during peak periods – indicating high levels of congestion – is Kings Way in Southbank.

The Department of Transport and Planning is working to alleviate congestion across Melbourne's traffic network via its Smarter Roads program, which can analyse traffic volumes and alter traffic light sequencing accordingly.

“On an average weekday, more than 9.5 million trips are made on metropolitan Melbourne roads," a spokesperson for the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning told Drive.

“We’re consistently making improvements and installing new technology across the network to help Victorians safely reach their destinations.”

The project has already analysed 900 traffic signal sites across Melbourne, with the goal of reviewing a further 3500 sites across the arterial road network over the next four years.

As part of the program, hundreds of live traffic monitoring cameras will be added to busy roads, pedestrian detectors will be implemented to see how much foot traffic is building up and wireless travel time sensors will be added to intersections.

The Smarter Roads program marks the most extensive review of these traffic lights since they were introduced almost 100 years ago.
