Underground Racing creates twin-turbo Ferrari 458 Italia

By Karl Peskett |

Underground Racing is well known for its performance upgrades for the Lamborghini Gallardo and Murcielago, most notably additional turbochargers. Now it has turned its hand to the Ferrari 458 Italia.

The workmanship speaks for itself, however when dealing with all-wheel-drive Lambos, there’s a bit more rubber for the power to be dispersed through. With the Fezza, it’s rear-wheel-drive only, which may make it a bit of a handful.

Says Underground Racing’s Kevin Howeth, “Even though we were extremely impressed with the handling and all the other cool features of the 458, we knew there was something missing.”

“So it was then time for the Underground Racing team to design a 458 Twin Turbo system. As the pictures show, this is what we came up with.”

“We will have a Twin Turbo system with a stock engine as Stage 1. The built engine with Twin Turbo system will be stage 2.”

No official power figures or acceleration times have been given as yet but the Underground Racing website will be updated with specs and videos soon. In the meantime, click on each pic to indulge in what should be every grown man’s fantasy.

what the hell does it need another turbo for, a 6 speed manual transmission would have been just dandy

    • Nath746

I agree. The only reason I wouldn’t actually buy one of these is because of the gearbox. I would happily drive one as a rental but I couldn’t live with it.
I also believe that if you want a manual, buy a lamborghini or porsche. Ferrari’s are all over-technologised (is that even a word? if not, i’ve just created it).

      • Tom R

The new Lamborghini wont come with a manual and the 911 Turbo S doesnt either.

      • Nasal Explorer

@Nath746. I agree wholeheartedly – I wouldn’t buy on either. But it’s not because of the gearbox, it’s because I couldn’t afford it.

Am i the only one that realised that the car is missing a rear bumper?

    • Flying High

and of course the reason the rear bumper has been left off for the photo shoot would be because they are showing the twin turbo setup… otherwise it would just look like the shell of a 458. And the whole point of the story would probably be lost. in particular the line “So it was then time for the Underground Racing team to design a 458 Twin Turbo system. As the pictures show, this is what we came up with.”

      • Shak

And that would make sense if we actually see the Turbos, but all we can see is some shiny tubing.

  • Vince

It’s 2011 now, can we use some larger resolution pictures, pardon the pun :) I want to see the power output cause this should be crazy.

  • Moe

The Lambo SV Twin Turbo is much nicer it’s AWD and an animal

  • Yeti Man

What a waste of money . If you want a modified turbo cars, buy a GTR or a Porsche.

  • Moey

Hope it doesnt burn up extra heat from the manifold from the turbo will increase chances of this 458 burning up

All I hear is ‘yap yap’ – for the people who are complaining about a manual box on this Ferrari or any other euro exotic, have you even driven something with the amount of power and handling characteristics of such cars ??

That’s right, no you haven’t and judging from your comments – probably never will.

If anything the shown Ferrari is an example of how much more wild this model can be.. I think its brilliant and would love to see the figures it does

  • SteveSV

Sensational car to begin with & only a more awesome weapon with the twin turbo addition. But like the guys up top, I’m old fashioned & would prefer a proper manual gearbox.

Can’t go wrong with white on black wheels!!

  • HJP

The 458 is already very fast. Addition of twin turbos just insane.

  • Andrew

I don’t really care about the manual gearbox one way or another, but I was recently looking at all those highly tuned Porsches from 9ff and such, and they all seem to use manual transmissions for anything above 800hp or so. It seems that standard PDK isn’t designed for more than that. So I wonder how well will Ferrari’s transmission cope with the extra power?

    • MattW

I’ll put my hand up to give it a try and report back my findings :D

  • Michael

how much do i have to spend for twin turbo set up for 1300 hp ferrari f430?
