2008 Citroen Berlingo preview

January 7, 2008 by Matt Brogan

The Berlingo has always been the red headed step child of the Citroen range, ungainly, awkward, and never really fitting in with the rest of the family. But the new C4 Picasso based van is set to change all that.

To be sold along side the current model (which will now be called Berlingo First), the new Berlingo is bigger, more stylish and considerably more practical with a 10 per cent  increase in load volume (3.0 to 3.3 cubic metres) and 6 per cent gain in payload (from 800 to 850kg).

berlingo02.jpgSet to arrive in Australia in May this year, Berlingo will be joined by the smaller Turkish-built Nemo and will be followed later this year by the Dispatch van (think Hiace /Hyundai  iLoad size).

Berlingo will be available as either a dedicated commercial van or a multi-use people mover (with removable rear seats) in Europe though at this stage Ateco has no places for the MPV here preferring a “wait and see” approach. Pricing as yet is not confirmed.

Hmmmmmm would suit a small French cheese maker me’s thinks or even a small French family packed up for a drive in the country ! Actually if the cheese maker had a family perfect!

  3. Lcat says:

Does the new Berlingo receive any changes to the suspension settings from the C4 Picasso? (I think CA found this to be the weakest point of the C4)

  4. Matt says:

I’m sure that although it shares the same platform as Picasso the suspension set up will be some what different given its commercial application and associated pay load increase (I think C4 Picasso can handle about 660kg vs 850kg here ???) – guess we’ll see once we get a drive Lcat!

lets hope the MPV arrives i have been seeing a turnaround in MPVs lately more and more people are buying them realising they dont need to drive a landcuiser

  6. Winston Lamont says:

For Pete’s sake Ateco, when will you get it? What people want right now is very clever, multi-use, economical & affordable cars that are also attractive and not appliance like. If ever there was such a car, the Berlingo MPV is it, let’s have it yesterday please!

Re: people movers, it would be good if Ateco would bring in the Picasso 5-seater, but apparently it’s not coming.

Last Friday I took delivery of a new Citroen Berlingo (New) van in fire engine red, and have done over 1,000 klms on the weekend. The new van is excellent, rides well on the road and returns 1,000 klms to the tank. This weekend I am driving it to Sydney and back. I believe it is the only new Citroen Berlingo van in the L2 model (10 inches longer) on the road in Australia. I previously had a C4 coupe but this one I can sleep in.
