Volkswagen Transporter Single Cab now available

By Brett Davis |

Volkswagen has announced the launch of the new Volkswagen Transporter Single Cab. The new single cab shares the same platform as the Volkswagen Transporter van, whilst offering a large rear tray for heavy loads.

The Single Cab also comes with Volkswagen’s fuel efficient 2.0-litre TDI engine offering 103kW of power. This can be had in either six-speed manual form or with an optional seven-speed DSG dual clutch transmission.

With this engine, the ute offers fuel consumption figures of 8.1L/100km for the manual – which emits 214gm of CO2 per kilometre, and 8.5L/100km for the DSG variant – which emits 224gm of CO2 per kilometre.

It also offers a range of safety features such as electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, traction control, Engine Drag Torque Control, an electronic differential lock system and Hill Holder. Inside, the car features a double bench seat for two people and a separate driver’s seat.

Prices for the new ute are:
Transporter Single Cab long wheel base 2.0 TDI 103kW 6-speed manual          $40,990
Transporter Single Cab long wheel base 2.0 TDI 103kW 7-speed DSG              $43,990

*Prices exclude on-road costs

    forty grand…your kidding…

    • Torque

I think a major service costs about 10% of the purchase price, I will tell my friend this models out & watch him go ballistic about the twin cab he had that gave him grief etc etc etc.

  • MJ

this is a strange time for VW to introduce this considering that the release of the amarok is just around the corner

    • Devil’s Advocate

…somehow I think they are both pitched at completely different markets. Just a hunch… ;-)

      • Stoney!

Probably the facts this is a helluva lot bigger lol….

        Stoney!

        • MJ

Its not all that bigger. VW quote a 1.2 ton payload, with a max tray width of 1900mm, where as the amarok (i’ve read) can have payloads upto 1.15 tonnes, and the pickup style tray has a load width of 1600mm, so i dont imagine a tray back version would be signficantly smaller than the transporter

          • Crossy

The tray size is marginally bigger than a standard ute at 3300 x 1900 versus 2700 x 1800, but that is more than 25% bigger and can make a lot of difference.
This is a commercial vehicle through and through(bench seat, dash gear shift, plastic floor, etc) and is promoted to people that actually use it for work. The Amarok is a luxury vehicle compared to this.

Completely different market. Transporter is the real Tradies vehicle, the Amarok belongs to that guys boss!

          • Devil’s Advocate

The Amarok may have a tray width of 1600mm compared to 1900mm of the transporter MJ, but don’t forget there are wheel arches intruding within the Amarok’s load area giving an effective width across the floor of only 1222mm. The Transporter does not suffer from that issue. I am also sure the Transporter’s tray is quite a bit longer than the dual cab Amarok as well. Weight is one thing, physical size is another…

I hope the Amarok will come in single and twincab tabletops. It should give hilux a scare if it does. I’m looking forward to the stoush.

  • the Sam who knows

Seems like a good move to me, the only real competitor to this in the ‘small truck’ market is the Kia K2700

    • NM

Ford Transit would also be its competitor wouldn’t it?

      • Shak

They dont offer the transit with a tray.

        • nickdl

They sort of do. There’s single and dual cab chassis which you can get a tray fitted on.

We saw a market where there is not sufficient reliability and decided to put 100% reliability and durability in it at a relly fair price.
