Facebook page supports drink driving and has nearly 20,000 fans

By Brett Davis |

A Facebook fan page called, ‘if u drink n drive ur a bloody idiot, if u make it home ur a f*ckin legend’ has upset police authorities after 19,228 users have said they ‘liked’ the page.

The page also includes various comments of… drink driving advocates who express instances where they have got away with drink driving. Police authorities in Geelong, Victoria, an area with one of the highest recorded accounts of drink driving offenders, has expressed their concerns towards these attitudes.

A recent report by news.com.au spoke with Geelong Traffic Management, Senior Sergeant Shane Coles, who warned fans of the page that police could target those users in the future. He said,

“They’re playing with fire and they need to realise that police don’t live in a cave, we do use these sites. Users on pages like YouTube and Facebook we can follow up on and we can target in the future.”

Some of the comments on the page include, ‘I MADE IT HOME, AND TOO MCDONALDS. TWICE!!’ and ‘I drink and drive every weekend, whatcha gonna do about it’.

The total fans is a lot for a Facebook fan page, for comparison, a Subaru Facebook ‘Interest’ page currently has 20,132 fans, just 904 more than this site.

These idiots will probably find it hard to get insurance in the future – bet they never thought of that.

    • Facebook

F the insurance, what about the innocent lives they endanger!!!

    • Andrew M

Insurance companies only care if you have been convicted before, not if you actually do but just havent been caught

  • Klinky

I think the less publicity that’s given to these dipsticks, the better.

The sad part about it is that these immature children are allowed to be licensed in the first place.

    Replace users with bogans.

  • Adam

What a bunch of clowns, it won’t be so funny when one of them either gets caught or suffers a horrible accident. This page should be taken down.

  • davie

I don’t condone drink driving and have been in a painful accident caused by a drunk.

However, I think some of the holier-than-thou high and mighty replies on this thread demonstrate the exact sort of reason why this facebook page was created.

The facebook page is a bit of inconsequential nonsense created to annoy self-righteous authority figures. It is only as important as the publicity it gets.

That’s social media for you. It takes the message medium away from governments and hands it to the individual who hates annoying and belittling government safety advertising.

Our society is over represented by so-called experts (like harold scruby) telling others how to run their lives and dispensing arrogant belittling self-evident information which infuriates most people who obey the law and just want to get on with their life.

    • Devil666

Very insightful. Good to see some level-headed rational free thinking individuals exist in this day and age. Props to you.

Sorry to hear about your accident, I hope you made a full recovery :)

    • Yonny

      Davie, you said:

“The facebook page is a bit of inconsequential nonsense created to annoy self-righteous authority figures. It is only as important as the publicity it gets.

I agree with the sentiment entirely. I just wonder if the people posting are aware or even care about the fact that online comments (such as those on facebook) never disappear, and may come back to haunt them when they least expect it (such as, for example, when applying for a job).

People should be allowed to express an opinion and I wouldn’t want the facebook page to be removed just because the opinion is unpopular – but let’s face it, advocating drink driving is pretty silly.

Sorry to hear about your accident.

  • Michael

I do not condone drink driving,

First of all it is not technically a face book group, so you cannot become a member you can only `like it`

Secondly people are always making facebook `like` pages based on old jokes, which is what this is.

It is an old joke you would see on a bumper sticker on on the back of a toilet door like `Dont drink drive its a washing powder`

Some will find this joke in poor taste, but it is not the first joke to cross those boundaries and nor will it be the last.

I am sorry for anyone who has been affected by drink driving, but I believe that someone has started this based on humour and do not actually condone drink driving.

If you head this in a stand up routine you would not think the comedian is condoning drink driving, same thing here.

  • The Oracle

Judging by the spelling, punctuation and grammar, they were obviously p!$$ed when they wrote their comments.

@Yonny,I think that people who are stupid enough to think that drink driving is funny, really aren’t very often bothered about insurance and registration or licences for that matter either.

  • Andrew M

Here is a thought, why dont they take down the whole face book system and other similar sites???

These things cause nothing but trouble all in the aim in creating ficticious friends.

I think anyone on these sites need to get real life rather than a cyber one

    • Devil666

Ha! How ironic. Or is that moronic? Either way, fail on your behalf.

There are also thousands of “DON’T drink and drive” pages on Facebook.

  • Hugh Jorgan

    Idiots.

There’s one born every day and they’re dying at the rate of one a year. Soon we’ll be surrounded by them.

  • gary

me personaly i think high range drink drivers should go straight to jail. i was involved in a MCA that totalled my car $14000 damage. by a drink driver at 08.00am he was given a PBT. indicated he was over the limit. he was escorted to the nearest police station were his BAR was 3 times over the legal limt. his punishement was 12 cancellation of his licence .his insurance was wiped out ,mind wouldn’t help as they had no way of recovering there cost. so check your insurance policy to see what happends if you get hit a a drink driver. you might be shocked like i was. after 35 years insurance and no claim.laws need to be changed that the innocent parties be covered by TAC claims and then TAC tackle the offendered driver to recover costs.

  • nasal explorer

    Me, personally, I use punctuation.

    • Mr Brooksy

That adds a lot to the conversation… I’m glad you wrote that.

      • nasal explorer

Why, thanks. You seem prone to a little punctuation and correct grammar yourself. Nice to see.

  • Mr Brooksy

I find it hard to believe that people would condone (let alone flaunt) drink/drug influenced driving. Partly because I barely drink and have not touched drugs, however I’m not in a position to judge them according to my values.

What I do know is that, like ‘davie’ mentioned earlier, the general public are getting sick and tired of the incessant rubbish put out by the state and federal governments of Australia. Mainly the states fear mongering and miss representation of the ‘facts’ of driving. We all know that its unbelievably dangerous to drive drunk, or under the influence of drugs. But when the state governments go on about speeding 1kmh over the limits blah blah blah, we find ourselves in the same situation described by the story “The boy who cried wolf”.

I don’t condone the page (as already stated, but somehow I can see why they exist! The general public are using their voices (rightly or wrongly), to me this should strike fear into the hearts of the lying, fear mongering politicians.

‘Gary’ thanks for that piece of information, I’ve not heard of an insurer not paying up because of a ridiculous loop hole. Also, I also agree that those caught drink/drugged driving should be locked up, and if they cause an accident, locked up for longer, those who kill someone… much longer. But I’m no politician, nor do I have any say in the making of those laws… maybe that’s the issue we face?

  • Eric

    A quick search on F/B

    ” Drink Drive”

    one page has 24,539 “LIKES”

    an other has 19,316 “LIKES”

there are dozens of pages like it.

  • Qikturbo

Unless police have magical powers to change the innate Australian characteristic of becoming drunk and being behind the wheel of any vehicle, there is virtually nothing they can do to

  • Shak

I know this sounds a bt harsh, but lets see one of these idiots get into a really bad head on with a tree or safety barrier, and then ask them how supporting they are of Drink Driving.

  • Wayne Kerr

I don’t condone drink driving, but I’m not a fan excessive political correctness either. I see this as a hilarious attack on political correctness.

Wonder if there’s a page called:

    “Speed Kills … boredom”

    • Whaaaaat

I cann’t believe you would honetly think that, this is nothing like a witty stab at PC, this is flat out cultural acceptance of an issue that destroys lives. The lives of ambulance officers, police members, the deceased, be that either the culprit or the innocent people they collide with.

Accepting a page like this is an affirmation to these morons that this sort of stuff is the norm.”Why can’t i drink drive, the facebook page has 20,000+ supporters and the cop didn\\\’t take it down, it must not be that bad then?!!\\\” Thats how these bogans think, it then becomes the social norm but by the looks of these pages it already is.

As a junior Constable i am sickened such a site even exists and if you ever had to give a death notice after a fatal MVA you would too.

  • Hyundai4

If you text and drive, then you support drunk driving

  • ohreally

    Who really cares

there are facbook pages in support of class a drugs, dangerous behaviour, violence, criminals on the run etc
there are fan pages for 15000 dollar handbags

There is nothing shocking about idiots being idiots.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000229920376 Stevo Terry

I drink and drive. Luckily my cappuccino has a lid or else I’d be wearing it.

    • nasal explorer

Have you tried driving a manual with a full coffee and no lid? You need to be very dextrous.

      • ElecEng

Just keep it in 2nd gear.
Most car can start in 2nd gear from standing still and if you rev it enough, it will go up to 100km/h.

Not that I drink anything whilst driving…

  • :-)

The sad thing this page is only being picked up now, it’s been around for a very long time. 20, 000 idiots, my god.
