Looks crap to me! Its just a new body on a 20th century platform. Commodore will continue its dominance of the Large car segment for many years to come particulary when the update comes at the time the sportswagon is released sometime around March/April.

With the Territory wheel, maybe Ford wanted to show us how NVH are tested, without disclosing Orion’s tire and wheel specs.

Yet going by the distance from the trailing edge of the door to the rear wheel arch and the short overhang it LOOKS like the tray area is about the same length as the VE it also appears that the tub is the same depth given the higher shoulder line
However; that could just be the camera angles.
Im not a big fan of the new falcon at all and actually think it looks terrible (id actually prefer a punch in the spline)
I suspect they are going to struggle to get this in the top 3 selling cars (i really think they will struggle with top 5)

I absolutely love it! I’ve mentioned it in the other article, but I’m already tired of the new VE Commodore. Sure it looks decentish in the higher spec models, Calais, Statesman, Caprice. I mean, everytime I see the black plastic handles I think to myself, ‘cheapo!’ There’s absolutely no contest between the butch Commodore and the elegant Mondeo inspired Falcon. Falcon wins hands down!

i doubt it will get smaller.
the falcon actually has had a smaller tray than the commy since’99 due to the space cab design.
now the commy has the same cab design as the falcon and their tray sizes are pretty much back on par. they both have lost that bit of tray space that used to be under the rear window and cut into the cab. thats where the extra cab room has come from
i wouldnt be surprised if the falcon tray actually gets that tiny bit bigger too.
I also think the VE has dated BADLY. I am over the SS/SV6 body kit already. Although still liking the HSV’s (bar maloo YUK). I think the Calais looks very plain for a higher spec car. The VZ Calais had more appeal I feel. But looking at these pics I am liking. It looks fresh, simple, modern yet quite aggressive. If its a larger RWD Mondeo it will sell well but Ford will need to lift the quality and service.
Hey Goog, sorry, no idea on VE ute battery placement. If it isn’t in the engine bay you’d have to think it’d be hidden behind the seats where they have opened up that area as storage space.
Black Orion would have to be the Typhoon. As far as I know ‘phoon is the only one (BA/BF) with those trapezoid shapes in the grille although it doesn’t have the Murcielago-esque wheels that the current ‘phoon has.
I don’t know why Holden fans bag the AU platform anyway. Look at the Saloon car racing series. Slightly modified 6-cylinder AUs and VTs (roll cage, better brakes, etc) and the AUs always win. In the utes (BA/BF and VY/VZ) very even but Ford still edges out on top most of the time, despite the leaf springs designed for a heavy load.
VE is a great new platform (finally Aussie designed). Falcon keeps making evolutionary improvements on the same platform which was always a match or better until the VE came along. Orion will show us if Ford have improved once again.

I agree, the AU Falcon Saloon cars leave the VTs for dead and they mostly just production cars with roll cages, so the AU platform isn’t bad at all. It’s just that Football…Wank’a using that same excuse all the time. “It’s a 20th centry platform” So, that’s he’s best, wow!! NOT!
Andrew M, the purpose of the photo with the Territory is to showcase the roller with the simulated road surface underneath the car.
That roller is used in the Semi Anechoic Chamber for NVH testing purposes. That whole chamber is a new building invested as part of the Orion program.
Therefore, in that photo they are showcasing the new Orion testing facility, not the car itself.
So they can use any car for that photo, it doesn’t matter.
Boys and Girls, I’m only new to this car thinggy, but if I’m not mistaken I think the photo is actually meant to show the drum from the dyno.
I suppose it to let the masses know that when they throw the car onto the machine it’s actually working on a drum coated in bitumen, AKA the road.
If you have look through the set of images, you will see that they take great pains of highlighting the workings of what the car is running on.
Two things that surprise me:
1. The fact that they have shown their opposition their acoustically line “chamber”.
2. They must have had a fire in this room and it scared the crap out of them. That’s why they have so many sprinklers.
Observations by a novice.
Just looking at the Royal Auto magazine that RACV sends me. In 2007 Australia’s Best Cars awards the TDCi Mondeo has won the “Best Mid-Size Car Over $28,000″ award.
Here’s hoping Orion has taken a lot of cues from Mondeo.
Wheelnut, its got the same tub as the Current ute, even has the same liner and has the same tail gate. Only difference is the side panels. The internal dimensions of the tub i would bet are exactly the same.
This should be a case of lets wait and see what it looks like uncovered.
There are obviously plenty of keyboard nazis and experts who will write off a car before it’s even released.
It WILL have plenty of gear for the money compared to Commodore, Aurion and 380.
the ute on the dyno looks not bad.. but yeah the battery in the ve ute would it be in a little compartment in the tray maybe, of to the side of the tray?
Minnow, the tub is actually all new and it is supposed to be bigger. The liner is always going to stay the same, as its easy to slide things across on, and less risk of damaging the actual body.
I am liking the look of these cars, i think its design is going to be refreshing and make the VE look very old. I just test drove a VE SS-V ute the other day, but after that failed to impress me, i must wait for the XR8 ute to come out and i will test that.
i can tell you the tub, cab and liner all look radically different that the current one, i think the public will be blown away by it!
I’m over high rake doors and huge sedans, but still interested in what Ford’s going to produce.
I think the design is going to be rather staid and bland, as is the trend. Black Honda Euro-esque headlights, chunky panels, high rake doorlines – standard fare.
Lets see if the FPV’s do better.

How ever the VE is a revolutionary car when put in HSV trim. I am a ford man myself but i never over look or bag a good car. I can and will appreciate a good car. Ford needs to pull out all the stops this time. The public are waiting for it. Ford is hoping for it. This is do or die time basically. No room for failure. Here’s to hoping guys. As for the photo’s. umm the 290kw gt.. the vz ss was 0-100 in 5.7secs.. and i seen the gt was 0-100 in 5.9.. heap of shit.. and yeah the vz hsv had shit steering but ayy look the ve’s steering, its alot better now then the falcon.

Everyone knows the Ve is a better vehicle at the min, im sure ford has spent enough time perfecting this model that it should be at least as good as the Ve!
I think the ford 8 is as good as the 6 litre…. have you guys ever driven one, its smooth and responsive and its known to be as capable power wise as the HSV, people have proven it!
All you holden guys should go out and drive the BF with the 302 engine, its as good as the holden v8 in my opinion!

But when we bring up the Turbo 6 u just go on and on about how it aint a V8 and it has a torbo. Tonyn, I’ve driven the 290kW GT, but not the 302. I’m sure it is better, but I think HSV still have the edge, 0-100 anyway. I’m looking forward to the Orion, and I’m hoping it will go well beyond the current BF and HSV.

i neva said fords a bad motor company i just said that there v8s that they have at this moment of time in the bf’s are not as powerful as they should be.. but we cant really say anything about the orion until we hear more about it, like a few weeks out or maybe even when its realeased, its just 2 early to start predicting how good it will be.. thats all me and JBOT are saying..

I’d agree with Goog that Holden has the better V8 and Ford has the better 6, maybe just poor choice of words. There’s other things I wouldn’t agree with him tho.

I can tell you that so many of you are completely wrong about what ‘Orion’ is compared to BF.
It is essentially completely new just like VE…. the only thing that could be called ‘carry over’ is the rear floor/wheel tub to the rear seats.
Everything else is re-engineered, redesigned, recalibrated, re-everthing in layman terms!

one important note to Goog (and jbot) is that the 302kw on the current GT was achieved running regular unleaded where as the 307kw GTS gained 307kw running premium!!!!!!!!
its a bit silly to say the 5.4L falcon motor is under powered dont you think??
on premium the 5.4L might equate to around 310kw.
and even if it was a 5kw difference in favour of the commy who the hell would notice it anyway??? especially over 300kw

When I saw the Jim Beam Tin it looked more like a BMW M3 or a 318i Hatch.
If they wanted to make it look more like the DJR Falcon they could have put in a slightly smaller bottle and given you a set of playing cards [in the boot area].. and added the decklid

I have been studing this car for over a year now and hearing from ford that this car in the fairmont and up maybe even the futura that they will be home to dusk sensering headlights and rainsensoring wipers. This car is all ready thought to be a 5 star safty car.
I hope the photos are wrong. Surely in 2008 a manufacturer would realise that good design requires the rear wheel arch arc to be at least as large or larger than the front arch to make the vehicle look balanced.
