Lexus recalls 264,000 cars, 927 in Australia

Lexus will recall 264,000 cars- including 927 in Australia – with GS and IS sedans affected.
The issue relates to cars built between December 2003 and December 2005 which may have a faulty fuel pipe that could lead to a fuel leakage. Lexus says no accident has been reported as a result of the issue but 39 defects have been reported by drivers
The recall affects 215,020 cars in Japan. About 49,000 other vehicles will also be recalled worldwide, in markets including the US, Britain and Canada.
Lexus Australia has initiated a safety recall campaign on a range of Lexus IS250 and GS300 models that were built between December 2004 to November 2005. In all about 927 vehicles are involved in Australia.
According to Lexus Australia, there is a possibility over time on certain vehicles that a small split may appear in the fuel pipe.This is due to a weakness created in the pipes during manufacture, combined with natural corrosive agents in the fuel and fuel pressure pulsations.
The recall is the second in a just over a month for Lexus’s parent company, Toyota. In October Toyota recalled about 470,000 cars in Japan to fix problems with their fuel and steering systems.

So the perfect is not quite perfect. How reassuring. On the other hand, if it was a ‘less than Lexus’ brand, would they bother with a recall, or wait for the customers to find out?
I don’t see how you could compare a Lancer Ralliart and IS250, I think the only similarity they have is that they are made in Japan.
Lexus don’t have many recalls as a general rule. Are they still the only prestige seller that offers a 4 year warranty?

both mitsubishi and hyundai offer better than lexus!!! does that mean compared to mitsu and hyundai what lexus offer is pathetic? NO
mitsu and hyundai offer good warranties to say to people “hey look at us, what poeple think about our quality is wrong, and look we will prove it”
perhaps lexus offer the better warranty to try and lure people from BMW and others because they obviously cant match them for styling.

BMW have always had 2 years …………as long as I can remember! If you have problem with getting sales I guess you offer longer………..BMW apparently don’t have too!

yes james you can argue or say what ever you want, but you will find that more times than not the real reason is they do have something to prove hence the large warranty.
not only in the automotive field but also in any product.
for eg duck down to your local bunnings store and tell me why the $30 no “name brand” drill has a far greater warranty than a $600 Dewalt brand or makita brand drill?
should people who are looking for a sign of a quality drill go for the longer warranty?

i have a little feeling that ford just might offer a 4 or 5yr warranty with the orion.
why? because they are on a quest to try and claw back some market share. they are also working on quality and what better way to try and display that to consumers than put it out there than letting consumers see a better warranty on a ford than the percieved good quality on toyotas.
im not saying it will happen, but dont be surprised if it does

Ford did offer a 4 year warranty with the BA mark 2s for a while from memory, sorry about the comeback but some people are idiots .
yeah they have tried a few things like that like….
free servicing with AU11 to try and boost sales after series 1
also at a couple of points you could get a 5yr warranty during the BA series as part of a sales drive

Missile, I own and drive german, I think you might want to look exactly where they stand in reliability surveys, that would be down the bottom 20% fyi. german engineering is fine, its their design that sucks, that and the mexican, south african soon to be russian build quality.

AndrewM Lexus is quite a successful business, they have good market share in the USA and japan, they have been operating since 1980(?anyone), cut them some slack, they are doing okay. Are they as successful as BMW or Mercedes, I dont know, do you? Certainly they dont sell as many cars…It was not so long ago that the president of Mercedes was apologising for poor quality and reliability, member the elk test and the A(?) the smart, BMW and rover, member that, what was it, 500 mill loss? Does the expression I Drive want to make anyone weep here? Thats an example of german design, make it as complicated as possible. Have any of you sat in an IS250, seen the quality of the interior? Reversing camera standard, oh and the fold down arm rest in the back seat of a 325 is an option??? (I didnt make that up)

Lexus has and undoubtedly will evolve to be one of the greatest automotive companies in the world and anyone to argue otherwise would be nothing short of drongo.
One must not forget the fact that BMW and Mercedez Benz have been around for many long generations before Lexus was even thought off hence have had many long generations to establish cliental and loyal ones at that.
But, what we are witnessing now is sure growth in repect, recognition and popularity of the Lexus brand and with new models becoming available, thier customer base in growing at every passing year.
As far as i am concerned – Lexus is undoubtedly one of the most highly regarded automotive brands in the world and will defantly become one of the most feared BMW / Benz rivals.

Yes – Lexus does offer a longer warranty to entice potential buyers away from the much longer standing rivals and quite frankly, it is slow but surely having an effect
That said, just about every quality and customer satisfaction survey in the last few years alone has indicated that the quality (craftsmanship), reliability and dependability of a common Lexus vehicle runs rings around that of it’s most prominant rivals.

Missile, Im not suggesting that the germans dont make good cars, they do, wonderful motors, superior handling, beautiful styling, of course this doesnt apply to every model made by the germans, but they do benchmark these areas. But in less that 20 years, lexus has done the impossible really and managed to compete in this field. No 1 in reliability worldwide for the last 12 years, shit, they have only been operating 18 years. No 1 in luxury car sales in the USA.
They are only going to get better, I dont see how you can be critical of any manufactuer who offers a 4 or 5 year warranty, its the consumer that benefits, and it ensures that production quality is high, isnt that what it is all about, a better deal for us?
James Im not one for personal insults normally and I do apologize ,but to say the only reason Germans offer 2 year warranties is because they know stuff will go wrong is an insult too! As I mentioned I have owned 6 over 20 years BMW have always had the same warranty and that was before the days they starting making them S Africa and the USA ,where there made has nothing to do with it anyway……thats just comes down to how good BMWs quality control is.It seems how ever Toyota’s quality control is getting worse by the month at the moment! Do I think Lexus make good cars…….sure there up there with BMW,MERC AUDIs but thats the bench mark they are trying to meet too!
Thanks missile, I agree the germans set the benchmark and lexus have to meet it, they are not far off though, the more competition out there, the better for us all, more choice, quality and the bar has to be continually raised.

So you think the day will come that Lexus will make a better car than the Germans? I doubt it as I have mentioned before they need a bench mark to copy so I guess that how they have been able to do what they have in such a short time! But isn’t offering the 5 year warranty all about selling more cars not because they believe there product is that good!

Missile, as to what makes a better car is subjective to what the buyer is looking for. I sense you may be an enthusiast with regard to performance, correct me if Im wrong. Some buyers will target performance, some will target luxury, some will target smoothness, some styling, most likely the combination of all these in the particular order intrinsic to the buyers requirments.
At this time, the germans benchmark engines and performance and styling, lexus, luxury, smoothness and reliability, so it depends what the buyer is looking for.
I think that lexus has started to change and embrace the styling, performance aspect as well(finally), give them another 8 years, and lets see whats out there there, at the very least, it should be interesting :)

Who know whats to blame? It does seem that Toyota has had more than its normal share of recalls and problems this year though!I have always been a Toyota supporter too!
Over production missile, people get to busy, also Toyo do have a fairly extensive range, and varying mix within the each model range, cant be easy to monitor. I do suspect however that just maybe, Toyo in chasing sales have just dropped the ball a little.

Yep I know what your saying about getting busy! My hubby is about to make his 3rd trip to China in 2 months cause they cant keep up with production for us and the other countries we supply! Then they change components without telling you cause there cheaper but a the same time the quality is worse!
Many automotive company’s including German ones get stuff made in China and also have the same problem. With a high ticket item like ours you have to have good quality….people demand it!

Hey Tonyn. I buy new. so warranty covers me for 3 years. On that basis I dont have to worry to much, mines been fine, tho a couple of build quality issues.
Have driven Jap cars, Honda Euro(a pretty good one), lexus Is200,Camry Ultima and tbh enjoyed them all.
Lotsa of people have had no probs with their euro cars, but quite a few have, partic electronics, when yu pay that much, just think they should be trouble free is all.

Hard to say………..never driven an Audi! I have always liked the look of BMWs in the 80s Audis were real yuk compared to BMW 3 series…….now days I am sure Audi is making a good product better than BMW ???????Im not fond of that big grill though!
