Helen and John Taylor world’s most fuel efficient couple retire

By Brett Davis |

The world’s most fuel efficient couple, Helen and John Taylor, have decided to retire after smashing 42 fuel economy driving world records and 88 overall driving records.

The Taylors are renowned for anything and everything related to fuel efficient driving. They’ve even started a global initiative called Eco2Driving which hopes to educate and inspire motorists into the world of fuel efficient driving, and breaking more world records.

After breaking various records around the world, the couple is now focusing on educating drivers, including governments and fleet vehicle drivers about their knowledge on how to drive more efficiently. They hope to reduce CO2 global emissions by 10 percent through their teachings.

Some of their records include:
-2002 Peugeot 406 HDi diesel driven from Melbourne to Rockhampton (2,348.3km) on one tank of fuel.

-2006 Volkswagen Golf 1.6 FSI driven around the world on 24 tanks of fuel, taking 78 days to complete. They averaged 4.5L/100km for 29,717km.

-2008 Peugeot 308 HDi around the coast of Australia, 14,580km, averaging 3.13L/200km.

I can’t think of any more boring records to break… good on them for being dedicated to it though.

These 2 are legends to me, if they could teach 10% of the population how to drive and save fuel, 1000′s of L of fuel would be $aved, and cleaner air to boot.

I would LOVE to know how they get such amazing MPOG’s out of a vehicle

    • Daniel

probably drove at 2kmh everywhere they went

Not at all, i believe most of there Hwy driving is done between 85 and 90kmh, so they do NOT doodle around like a turtle.

My only regret is they never tried a Prius, could be like Good-Job-Ben’s secret Valiant, use so little [no] fuel it actually MAKES it rather than burning it, weird i know, but that’s Good-Job-Ben the tinker for’ya.His dad made a GasProducer during the war, that car ran on gas made from burning wood/charcoal, no petrol used at all [popular during rations of WW2]

          On a highway, 85-90 km/h IS doodling around…

  • Dan

    thrilling…….

I wonder how many needless kms they drove to achieve the title of “most fuel efficient”. Kind of ironic really.

If they were keen on saving the environment, they should’ve taken their pushbikes instead.

That was my first impression too, but I guess the bigger picture here is much more important. If their message is adopted by other motorists it will quickly counter the negative effect of these record breaking drives in terms of emissions.

I want to know that, now they have retired. will they will settled back and buy Big fat Landcruser or a H2 Hummer?

Clearly the Taylors have a career and reputation about this, they are not going to ruin it. Plus I don’t see they have any difficulty getting sponsorship of a fuel efficient car, while no one will give them a LC.

Wouldn’t the world’s most fuel efficient couple ride a bicyle…

    • Daniel

      Or walk

      • Hooda

Cycling is more efficient, trust me: try walking down a hill and try riding a bike down a hill.

Lots of funny comments. I believe that driving to get the best fuel economy is not that easy as you think. I am sure we would have at least 20% worse fuel economy as Taylor’s.
