Mazda Australia offers Special Service Program for steering recall

By Brett Davis |

After the recent worldwide Mazda3 recall, Mazda Australia has announced it will offer its Special Services Program (SSP) for vehicles fitted with the Electro Hydraulic Power Assist steering system. Associated with the recall, it predominately affects the previous generation Mazda3s produced between 2 April 2007 and 30 November 2008.

The problem and recall was issued because residue was found in the power steering gearing lubricant, which could lead to a failure of the power assist. Mazda Australia says if this occurs an indicator light on the dash cluster will illuminate.

Owners of the potentially affected vehicles will be contacted by a Mazda dealer, where repairs may be made free of charge.

Ive Just Been issued with a recall notice for my 2010 Subaru Liberty Sports Premium, it is associated with a “crack” of somekind, it causes the ABS, ESP and EBD to fail, well thats good to know when my nearest dealer is over an hour and a half away :D

      Nice leisurely drive then eh?

I’m surprised to be honest we haven’t seen more of these over the past ~decade (in general, not specifically mazda)

The article above while possibly rewritten to avoid claims of plaigerism is misleading. The lubrication of the steering gear is separate to the hydraulic assist oil. The assist oil does play some minor lubrication role for the seals but not on the same scale as the grease or oil in the gear set. The failure of the assist could catch someone out during manouveres and could possibly result in an accident particularly if it failed at a critical time as the steering would become heavier. It would be a slow drive afterwards because there would be a lot of freeplay with the valve able to be turned until it reaches the lost motion dead stop before turning the wheels and the reverse when straightening them.

My power steering failed on the weekend, in a Westfields parking station (fun, fun!). After 30 mins of being turned off, it came back on.
Booked it in to my local dealer today but made sure I rang Mazda Australia yesterday to see where I stood, since it isn’t an official recall in Australia. My dealer at first was subtly accusing me of overheating the car, however, today when I dropped the car off, he said he had received the call from Mazda and they would replace the power steering system under warranty.
