2010 BMW Z4 sDrive35is flagship arrives in Australia

By George Skentzos |

The range-topping BMW Z4 sDrive35is has made its official Australian debut today, bringing with it the fourth and most potent engine option available in the BMW roadster range.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35is features a modified twin-turbocharged straight-six engine – not to be confused with the single twin-scroll turbo engine used in other force-fed BMWs – coupled with a seven speed Sport Automatic dual-clutch transmission.

As has become the trend for models in the BMW line-up boasting the range-topping engine variant, the BMW Z4 sDrive35is features the unique M Sport package as standard offering aerodynamics kit, adaptive M suspension and 18” wheel alloys.

“The Z4 is already recognised as a design icon and a triumph of engineering, leading its market segment in terms of global sales,” said BMW Group Australia managing director, Stavros Yallouridis. “Now in the form of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is, Australian performance enthusiasts can enjoy the ultimate BMW roadster experience,”

The award-winning straight-six twin turbo engine develops peak power of 250kW while peak torque stands at 450Nm at just 1,500rpm – increasing briefly to 500Nm during overboost – providing a level of spontaneity not usually experienced on a turbocharged engine.

At just 4.8 seconds to 100km/h from a standstill, the straight line performance of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is is on par with a six-speed manual BMW M3 Coupé – aided by the super quick shift times from the dual clutch transmission and launch control function.

Despite its performance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are identical to that of the BMW Z4 sDrive35i which has 25kW less power – averaging fuel consumption of 9.0-litres per 100km and emitting just 210 grams of CO2 per kilometre in the EU test cycle.

The new BMW Z4 sDrive35is is available now in Australian BMW showrooms priced from $129,900 excluding dealer charges, stamp duty, statutory charges and on-road charges.

Car companies sure do love that sea cliff bridge. I’ve lost count of how many publicity shots of cars I’ve seen on it.

      I think its near Wollongong.

There’s one in Wollongong, and another along the Great Ocean Road…I can’t be sure which of the two this is though.

I’d put money on this being the engine that’s in the BMW 1 Series M to be released next year. There have been a lot of rumours putting it at 250kw, so it seems logical (note also that they said this is the twin turbo, not single turbo twin scroll).

yeah I think it’s actually been reported multiple times that this will be the engine to be found in the 1M. I wonder whether they will be tuning the engine up tho.

Either way, that thing is going to be an absolute gun! Even though BMW state that the 135i covers 0-100km/h in 5.3 secs, reviewers say it consistently does 5 secs flat. You’re probably right, it would be unlike the M group to leave a BMW engine untouched. Here’s to 250kw+ and a sub 5 second 0-100km/h time :)

This Z4 has the same amount of power as the Audi TTRS, but has an anonymous name and basically the same looks as the standard model. If BMW stuck Z4 M badges on this, it would be positioned as a nice successor to the previous Z4 M, which had 225kW if my memory serves correctly. It’s probably nicer to drive than the TTRS as well. They would have done more thorough market research than I have, but from my point of view, it looks like BMW have shot themselves in the foot.
