Video: Bugatti Veyron Super Sport top speed and hot lap on Top Gear

With the new Bugatti Veyron Super Sport reclaiming the record as the world’s fastest production car earlier this month, Top Gear’s Captain Slow was on hand to attempt the record-breaking feat for himself just before the professionals took over.

Since piloting the original Veyron to its maximum velocity of 407km/h in an earlier episode, it seems James May is the most qualified man for the job – or perhaps just the most expendable.

It seems Bugatti’s trust in Top Gear has improved substantially since last time, with the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport happily placed in the hands of the Stig for a benchmark hot lap of the Top Gear test track. Will it top the lap time board? Only one way to find out.

I love this car to bits, and I’m so happy it is the fastest car on the Top Gear test track. Well done Bugatti, that tiny bit of weight loss and that gain in power/torque really helped it out

wasn’t the ferrari fxx or whatever it was the fastest at like 1:10…… they had it on the same episode they revealed that Michael Schumacher is supposedly the stig? or doesn’t it count because there are only like ten of them and whilst you own it you have to borrow it from the ferrari factory whenever you want to drive it? I could be wrong but i swear that was the case on the episode on WIN last week…. the Gumbert was second at that stage too

The Ferrari FXX was driven by Michael Schumacher around the Top Gear track and clocked the fastest time. But Clarkson took it off since the FXX had racing slicks (all the other cars were on road tyres), hence the quick time.

Just makes you appreciate these fine engineered beasts even more. Fastest in a straight line and on TG’s twisty stuff. I’m impressed. Now beat that Aero Ultimate SSC. Ooh and that orange is lovely. It didn’t seem that fast a lap because the Bug sat so flat and looked so nice through the corners. A++ Bugatti

It really was ‘cartoon-like’ around the track… especially the start. It really is an incredible machine and I don’t care what anyone says about it’s ‘lack of soul’ or whatever, at the end of the day the Bugatti engineers (and all the others) involved have done an incredible job. The Veyron truly will go down as one of the great cars.

Watching how fast the speedo climbs from 200km/h to 350km/h.
And that 4 wheels spin at the beginning of the lap. That’s 4 wheels spin for a 2.5ton car! Amazingly powerful engine!!
