BMW recalls 2010 to 2011 5 Series sedan and Gran Turismo

By Brett Davis |

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in America has reported that 6080 BMW 5 Series sedan and Gran Turismo models, built between January 12 and July 1, 2010, have been recalled due to a faulty fuel gauge sensor.

The administration says the sensor can become wedged inside the tank, restricted float movement as the fuel level rises and falls. This could impair the in-car readout, suggesting more fuel is in the tank than what is actually available.

The Australian government hasn’t confirmed if this affects Australian-delivered vehicles yet, but if your car fits this description and you find yourself stationary on the side of the highway, you’ll probably know why.

We’ll keep you updated in any case.

    These new Beemers look frumpy.

The 5-series GT is on par with Ssangyong with their design!

i watch 5th gear review the 5 series and the rear wheels turn slightly when you turn for better handling

Even Protons do that. It is called passive rear steering.

      • Baddass

        AKA Four-wheel-steering.

The Eunos 800 had this 4WS also along with some Honda’s where the rear wheels may turn with the direction and at other times against to correct over or understeer. With todays electronics it could even be tied into auto parking systems.

10 years on and BMW are STILL having fuel sender problems…

  • Van Ariel Disease

The Realist………but this is a fuel sender fault not a serious safety concern like Toyota and their death causing faults. I dont know why you are called the realist when you cant realize that nothing can be perfect. Nothing can take the crown away from the Aussie recall king the Recall-adore…..oh sorry Commodore.

    • Stoney!

It’s called customer service which ford still can’t seem to perfect with the problems they refused to recall for so long…

      Stoney!

lol any “fault” on a vehicle can cause other parts around it to be faulty also, and when you have enough parts working faulty…. it can cause serious problems and in turn can lead to fatalities… cars are dynamic machines…. anything that goes wrong when you’re travelling 80-100 kmph… heck even at 40kmph… the car is a weapon that can hurt the driver/passenger or pedestrian.

  • Economics 101

If you look at the bigger picture, this isn’t just a BMW issue. It’s symptomatic of increased cost cutting throughout the automotive industry – i.e. most of the major manufacturers and suppliers.

The industry have figured out that it’s more profitable to make sub-standard components and run the risk of recalls or bad press, and clearly, they see it as a gamble worth taking.

Even for Toyota, who’ve suffered no end of criticism from just about everybody, sales continue to increase and are still on course to make a profit this year.

So money speaks. That, or the public have short memories.

Agree with you somewhat there Economic guy. Ownership pressure on the workers has always been a key push to make profits, easiest way to get there is always finding ‘efficient’ ways in your service/production lines.

To note, if Shareholders arent happy with the profits a company makes they’ll oust the guy up top with someone else, and this is the pressure the CEO and similarly what he sends down to his management face.

        Thats the way it is..

        these days..

engineering tasks includes “cheapenning” the product for production… pressure is on the engineers to “improve” on previous parts by making them cheaper or better performance… and 99% of the time, the head honcho opts for the “cheaper” path…

as they say… Presidents/CEOs etc of big companies have accountants as advisors and the engineers are told to “cheapen” the product to increase productivity.. as they say… “stream lining”… increasing efficiency..

its the way the business world is…

    Imposter.
