Volkswagen Golf R pricing leaked

By Karl Peskett |

A moderator on the VW Watercooled website has apparently stumbled across Australian pricing for the forthcoming Volkswagen Golf R. Also included in the list was pricing on options available, but of course, it’s all recommended retail pricing, and not driveaway.

Considering the power increase over the standard GTI and the addition of all-wheel-drive, the pricing looks quite sharp.

    $5 300 for two seats… holy crap!

    • Kampfer

Micro fibre/leather racing style front seats $5,300…

      Much been very good leather…

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1435885244 Yani Hendriawan

so… $5 300 for 2 seats. i think my back and butt can do without that option. i’d rather buy some shiny rims for that

        • George

That’s nothing, the recaro’s in my integra type R released from Honda are worth 5k each!

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1435885244 Yani Hendriawan

i hope those seats make your car go faster

        • James Cortez

VW always rip customers off with their options!. Did I hear 74K driveaway fully loaded? CRIMINAL

          • Jeremy Clarkson

Stock standard 3dr driveaway price would be roughly 55k-58k

Anyways, people should be cheering about the seats is an option and not included. They could very well put those recaros in there as standard and put the prices up by 5k.

Just like the R32… leather seats was standard, therefore the 3k was included.

I think VW did that kind of pricing with so many options, due to the economy.

When you look at your european car brands, they all have a whole list of options so consumers can actually choose what they want.

I will definitely be getting a fully optioned golf R. what is 20k? lol

          • DDH

I actually reckon 70k is not bad value for a fully loaded golf R. That’s on par with a 370Z…hmm what you reckon guys?

        • Denzo

Dude, they are OLD-SCHOOL! They must look like garbage now.

    • AdamN

They’re racing recaro seats.. if you don’t want them, don’t option them. The standard seats are still leather so no big deal.
If you see them in person and sit in them you’ll know why they cost so much.

  • ox

Hope they bring out an R version of the new Jetta.

    • Grammar Nazi

An R version of the Passat CC would be so much cooler.

      • filippo

Maybe even an R version of the Transporter… or Caddy? Idiots!

      • MrQuick

What engine would go into the CC though?

Currently the CC runs everything from the Passat r36 underneath that body.

Though I gotta admit, an R version of the CC would be pretty cool.

    • Able

Why? That’d be boring on steroids, a big no no! It’d be priced at something like $60k drive-away – why not go far ANY other sports sedan for that money!? Liberty GT (you don’t have to look at it whilst driving thankfully), almost a Passat R36 (or at least a very slightly used one), Passat CC V6/Passat V6/Superb V6 (same platform/class), Octavia RS, Mondeo XR5T (for the remaining two months it has on sale), Mazda6 Diesel Hatch as well as the V8s Falcon XR6T/XR8, Commodore SS etc. All of these may not be the best looking or have the most space but they do have driving fun inputted into them (that being the point of a performance/biggest-engine, top of the range model) and I’m sorry, but Jettas are just too boring for that. Worse still, it’d be DSG-only here (like the Jetta 147TSI/125TDI Highline models)!

    • Jeremy Clarkson

They are bringing a R jetta, information have been released on that already.

  • Kampfer

Good pricing, right in the middle between WRX/Ralliart and STi/EVO. Subaru and Mitsubishi needs to watch out for this.

    • macca

spot on, the DSG will draw in a lot of buyers fed up with manuals (peak hr traffic). hopefully this will force Subaru to get a move on and offer a dual clutch in the STi. if this pricing is correct, the Golf R is a compelling offer for a turbo AWD with decent interior (albeit less torque than the Subaru).

    • Nope

How is that good value? with exchange rates where they are the car should be a lot cheaper. I bet VW would never try to sell this for so much in the UK (and don’t give me that crap that Aussies get a higher spec car – that’s just what the dealers tell you).

All in all you are all conditioned to paying too much for cars.

      • The Other Brad

Heh and in SA there’s only 3 dealers – one in Adelaide and two way out in the country. You either pay their price or don’t buy at all.. assuming you don’t want to go interstate to shop around.

        • The Other Brad

          3 VW dealers that is.

      • Kampfer

That’s sooooooo true. Knowing how much ppl in US pay for their cars make me want to cry…

        • Kampfer

But compare to what we pay or other sport(ist) cars Golf R is good value “in Australia”.

  • Red

going to miss the sound of the r32 though

  • TomJ

That will cannibalize GTi sales if that is true

For some reason i find those numbers difficult to believe, considering the outgoing car sold for 10k more

    • Jazrod

I went to Paul Wakeling VW today and those prices are spot-on… For a CandyWhite 3dr in a manual – on the road – for $53,480 (price not inc. onroads was $48,490)

  • yowza

    Lol
of course most buyers will included the usual standards you’d expect from this type of car….

so the 52K figure goes to about 60K…. or about 67K drive away…

or are those prices drive away already?

    • Denzo

I dont know why you got so many thumbs down.. it’s true. On VWWATERCOOLED.COM, nearly all R’s on order are at least $60K drive away+++ r.r.p can go up to $78K on road. Mine was $68.2K driveaway price.. So $52.5K?? I dont think so unless you go poverty pack/bare bones.

  • TomJ

The best bit about the Golf R isn’t the AWD system, but the fact it uses the larger k04 turbo compared to the k03 in the Golf GTi, this means with a very popular Revo tune the engine could comfortable push out power in the 240kw range with significantly more aggressive on boost feel. And all this for <$1000.

    • Joober@work

Correct, given this figure is reached merely by a chip on the Audi S3 (K04 too) I don’t see why its not going to be similar on the GolfR

    • JP

The Focus XR5/ST also uses the K04 turbo stock (perhaps a slightly different variant of it, i’m not sure), but you dont want to go too high with this.

A custom tune, and no higher than 15-16 PSI is what you will want. And with that, you can get alot of power. 240Kw however, i think is a little high. Depends on what boost it is running stock.

      • Joober@work

JP is that with just an ECU tune? if your worried about the K04 running on higher boost, better upgrade the intercooler.

Agree I wouldnt go higher than that, you’ll need a better turbo perhaps a GT28RS or somesort.

        • JP

Yeah i would definitely upgrace the IC and get a decent aftermarket CAI + exhaust etc on it.

Its not the heat as such that i’d be concerned about. More so after any high boost the little K04 will just not be providing any extra benefits, but instead just pushing out hotter air and doing nothing. That would then cause the ECU to have to retard timing etc etc. Its also creating undue wear & tear on the turbo, with no benefits after a certian point.

G28 or even G30 and you could have a field day!

  • sharka

What you need to remember is that the R32 came standard with leather seats.

The Gold R does not come standard with leather seats, so thats why it is abit cheaper.

You also CANNOT option on Park Assist with the R due to some limitations with the AWD system. However it does come standard with Front and Rear parking sensors.

Also remember that those prices listed above do not include:

    Dealer Delivery
    Stamp Duty
    Rego

So once you had that on, thats a good 3 – 4K extra for drive away prices.

And you still dont have Insurance added on there.

Also remember that VW have Drive Away deals on the GTI at the moment, with NO Dealer Delivery, Rego, Stamp Duty Fee’s.

    • AdamN

leather seats are standard, recaro racing leather/microfibre seats are optional

  • TomJ

The R is less of a premium product than the R32 based by the lack of engine differentiation. In essence all it is, is a GTi with an AWD sytem, and a slightly larger turbo.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong than that, to me this is still a Golf GTi-R. And thats exactly what we have always wanted, at under 50k its a bargain.

    • Joober@work

From what I recall I think its a bit more than that actually, its the same FSI engine in the S3 (more compression etc) than the standard GTI/A3 2.0T, its detuned from the Euro 199kw for the Aus market.

      • TomJ

Its obviously a different variant of the same engine, but the R32 used a completely different mill.

        • Denzo

Fail. 2 completely different motors!! EA888 and EA113. Next.

      • AdamN

You’re right. It’s more than just a slightly bigger turbo and it is detuned as our country is much hotter and they want the engine to still be running smoothly after a few years.

  • Iz

I’m more looking at the “The New MY11 VW Bluetooth” for $550.

When I went over to my local VW dealer to get a quote on a GTI, the salesperson assured me that the new integrated Bluetooth module (which I’m assuming is the same as the one in question) was a) available to order and b) priced at $895..

    Hm.

  • Widget Bob

My dealer just sent me through a price on a fully spec’d 5 door DSG, $74k driveaway… An optioned up, second hand S3 is looking more favourable now…

    • ox

74k on a hatchback! nice car but way overpriced.

      • R U Serious

74k over priced… compared to what. What AWD hot car can you get for that price? S3 is a little smaller so if you are 6ft the golf is great and less chance of getting keyed as its missing the “four rings” …. then again I could be biased, deposit laid down in Oct last year and my toy finally rolls out in the next few weeks.

      • Denzo

If you don’t have the coin, you don’t need to worry about it.

  • MK

I love it how people get carried away with the ‘value for money’ concept. The current Golf 90 drive away @ 25-27 000.

Add a few bits and pieces, say $5000, and you should get to a GTI for $ 30 000. But you dont.

The tiguan starts at about $34 000 (petrol turbo and 4WD), add a few bits , say $ 5000, and you get technically the same vehicle as a R for $39 000.

Dont get me started on 4×4 d/cab utes.

    • AdamN

The tiguan technically the same as an R? Are you on drugs?

      • f1worldchamp

        What he said

  • Mythfrances

VW Golf looks pretty ordinary to me… it reli isnt much better looking than a Toyota Corolla (could even be worse). Jetta and Passat look much more dencent.

Ok, Golf fans thumb me down now!

    • ChineseDriver

Sometimes, ordinary is not a bad thing, when do you do it right.

      • bangle

So true CD , time will tell, but this car will still look fresh in 5 years when many others will be in the dustbin of obsolessence , with no retained value .

Evolution is the only way to design an icon .

    • riceboy

i’m a golf fan, but i actually agree with you about “ordinary exterior”… but i’d rather pay for the drivetrain/interior/quality…

    • AdamN

That’s exactly what this market segment wants. More go, less show.

    • JP

I’m not a golf fan really, but the understated look they have is great.

Most people wouldnt really tell the difference in looks, and most idiots dont see you as a challange to try and race at every opportunity, even though they dont stand a chance.

Only thing that annoys me with my current hot hatch is that!

  • mcl334

Any1 know pricing of new polo gti coming out later in year

  • Shak

is leather standard. because in a 50k hatch you would want it to be.

    • AdamN

      yes it is

      • EC

Are you sure leather is standard? In the options list, it lists Vienna leather upholstery as $3,300 option. Vienna leather was standard for R32, but the fact that they list it as an option seems to indicate to me that Golf R doesn’t come with leather as standard?

    • Denzo

      Fail.

  • TuffGuy

As is the norm with Golfs everything is an option, particularly the good stuff most people would want. Start with the base model and for around 30k you do not even get cruise control or steering wheel controls for radio – you have to pay an extra 2k for a package just to get some of the stuff that cheaper cars have included in their price. The same goes on up the range having to pay extra for basic things such as xenons which are standard in all the competition. My guess is they only do this to make their cars appear cheaper and competitively priced with their competition.

  • Paul

The thing to remember is what service you will get once you have brought the car. $65000 for a car from a franchised dealer that also sell $15000-$20000 main stream tin-boxs. Will they give you a better service as you have paid more I don’t think so!

  • j

Sweet! The electrically adjustable seats are OPTIONAL.
Saves weight and possible complications of servo failure.

  • Nick K

Golf 6 looks too plain outside, but a much better interior. The R is still a great package, but I will miss the sound of the R32. I also doubt the haldex AWD will be as good as Subaru’s system .

  • Nightshifter

Cars are usually more expensive in Australia than they are in UK. Looks like this Golf R is an exception tho if the numbers posted are correct. The cheapest bare Golf R would cost >52k AUD with the current exchange rate!

Guess Renault will have to be more competitive when pricing their Megane RS250 now!

  • Mal

I’m far more interested in the above mentioned GTD than this Golf R. If only it were AWD. Hello VW! Give us a 3 door, 6 speed manual 125kw / 350nm diesel with 4 motion. I don’t care about any of the fancy options. As long as the sound system is good & the seats are comfortable you can count me in.

  • The Realist

    What a joke.

Pay a little more and get a superior car in a 135i.

    • AdamN

Are you kidding me? The 135 without any features is over $70k!

      • JohnW

What are you smokin. 135 with evertthing isn’t even close to 70k. Fully loaded I paided 40,197, I will post my invoice sticker. I think VW will lose sales if the car go’s for more that an STI or EVO. It should be priced at about the mid WRX model to a low STI model.

    • Nightshifter

The 135i has a pretty comparable retail price in UK but it’s a lot more expensive here. I don’t know how you can say “a little more”

  • Jester

Its cheap – but comes with nothing – cloth seats, no sunroof, nothing.

With a few options this does not look like a great deal – and I really would love to know how can they possibly charge almost 6K for a set of front seats – that’s crazy price, crazy.
This car with anything decent will be 70K – forget it – GTI is still the bang for buck.

  • JohnW

I think if VW puts the price at or more than and STI,EVO or 370Z they will loss money, just like they did with the R32. The car does not have the performance that the STI, EVO or 370Z has. The Golf R ( and I put and emphasis on the letter R) has to be close in performance to the other two cars. We all know why the letter ” R ” is on there. Why pay the same price and get lower performance. It just does not make since. Do not get me wrong, I love my 2006 Jetta GLI and I am awaiting the call from my local dealer on when the Golf R will be in there showroom and how much they are staring at. With that said I will not pay the same or more than an STI, EVO or 370Z for the Golf R. This qualifies as a ” NO BRAINER “. Thank you for listening. Please make the right choice VW!
