Let’s see how an F1 driver would go in either the freezing cold or blistering heat travelling at 160Km/h plus on either tarmac, snow, sand, or gravel – spending 75% of the time going sideways.. on undulating tracks with a series jumps and hairpin turns, severe drops on either side.. not to mention a stack of trees or even spectators only millimetres from the side of the track.. all whilst having someone talking to them [non-stop]
Now that’s skill. I mean unlike F1 drivers.. Rally drivers are putting their lives in someomne elses hands because without the navigator they’d have no idea what’s around the next corner..
Whereas F1 drivers know when to turn left/right etc because the majority of them have a map of the track mounted to the steering wheel.. It’s usually Left-Left-Right-Left-Left which they repeat for 50 odd laps
Rally drivers also have a roof over their head, a hefty rollcage, and a car structure that has crumple zones other than a metre or so of carbon fibre. A F1 race also goes for a few hours, whereas a rally stage goes for minutes. So the level of concentration has to be maintained for no where near as long.
To say being a F1 or rally driver is more difficult than the other is kinda irrelevant, as they are pretty different and require totally different skill sets. I think they’re both bloody brilliant, no way could I do either.
only an idiot goes into the old Rally drivers are better then F1 drivers argument. At the end of the day it take and enourmous amount of talent to do either. Fact is that if Michael Schumacher had applied his talents to rallying from a young driver he would be just as good as that as he is a F1, and if sebastien loeb had applied his skill to circuit racing then he would be just as good at that as he is at rallying. Whos to say which driver is better? its impossible because you cant compare them because they have never done one or the other from a young age. Its impossible to compare, and as i said only an idiot tries
YES YOU CAN COMPARE RALLY AND F1 DRIVERS BECAUSE IT WOULD TAKE MUCH LONGER TO GENERATE SKILL ALSO ADJUSTING TO DIFFERENT TERRAINS, JUMPS, SURFACE ALTERATIONS, ALTITUDE’S, SHARP CORNER’S ETC, RATHER GOING FAST AND MOVING AROUND A FEW LEFT RIGHT CORNER’S IS JUST NOT THE SAME AS THEY SAY A (RICH MAN’S SPORT), THE G FORCE’S ARE NOT THAT GREAT COMPARED TO OTHER HIGH SPEED MACHINERY (PLANES, DRAG CARS) ETC.
I LOVE FORMULA F1, BUT IF I HAD TO PICK ONE, RALLY $HITS ALL OVER THEM FOR SKILL AND ENTERTAINMENT…
These two guys have a serious dose of talent inside them. Anyone that competes in the WRC tour, is also blessed with oodles of talent. Let’s just leave it at that shall we!
I hate to big note myself, but Im actually a pilot, and have in the past competed in Aerobatics. Yes, we are subject to higher G loadings, but a routine does not last anywhere near as long as an F1 race, and your back side is not an inch from the ground, feeling every bump and undulation in the road. 1 negative G fo me is about as uncomfortable as 3 positive G’s. Imagine how these F1 boys would feel at the end of the straight at places like Fuji, where they experience NEGATIVE 5 G’s at the end of the staright over 70 odd laps!!! Not to mention the huge loads while cornering and accelerating. The Rally boys are awesome talents, and have to deal with different terrain, jumps, etc, but ultimately, in my opinion F1 drivers in general are the cream of the crop.
yes rally drivers have to deal with changes in terrain, hairpin corners, spectators and listening to spectators– no doubt its a great spectacle and incrediabely difficult to master- BUT F1 drivers do a few inches off the ground at 300km/h with open face cockpits and open wheels- factor in that their visibilty is way more affected being a few inches off the ground and the wheel constantly obscuring the view, tunnel vision when accelerating and high G forces. no suspension and a cramped cockpit with nowhere to move. Just driving it is a challenge and then add 21 other cars!. you can hardly see left or right. F1 drivers shed kilos on a hot race with the race temp around 45 degree not to mention a bloody hot engine behind them! in the rain- they are totally soaked with no wipers. Rally drivers are increadable drivers of normal cars but F1 are in a class of thier own!!!
Woz, on the left of your keyboard, between the shift and tab keys, is a key called capslock. Next time press it until its off.
How crazy was it that they kept driving so fast and so hard without being able to see anything from the water being flicked up for ages! That some balls to be driving that fast without being able to see a damn thing. Amazing
Last year mark webber had a problem in his williams where there was a hole in the firewall and heat direct from the engine was coming into the cabbin, super heating a patch of his seat. He was holding half of his arse off the seat as much as possible and at every pitstop his team poured a bucket of ice water into his cockpit to give him some relief. Incredibly he finnished the race (he had to do about 40 laps with his car in this condition) and even more incredibly, didnt drop off the pace! he was still puting in respectible lap times despite his condition. When he got out of the car he was imediately treated for 3rd degree burns too his left but cheek.
Compare that to petter solhberg earlier this year who retired because “the handling isnt good, the car is too hard to drive”
rallying is no doubt hard, but F1 drivers are made of tougher stuff!
oh yea btw… mark webber threw up in his helmet at fuji and kept going until he was hit from behind
this man is tough as all hell and extremely UNLUCKY!( sorry for YELLING like woz:P:P)
great footage and it was good to see they showed each other plenty of respect and racing room.
now there are 2 incentives to pass the guy in front.
1. for track position
2. so you can actually bloody see SOMETHING (thank god for them they use rain lights)
each to their own in F1 vs Rally, but its hard to say the rally car is much safer than an F1 car. the cockpits in any open wheeler are probably safer as everything around them disintigrates.
just last month a top fueler drag car at a local track near home (QLD) exploded on his run, got airborn, rolled, hit the wall etc, etc ,etc and he walked away with a bruised finger
arsenalroc,
hey mate ive heard of throwing up in helmets before YUCK
but one of the funniest i have heard is from i think it was Brad Jones who was absolutely busting to go to the toilet so along came a safety car…….
then he decided to unbuckle himself and aim for a hole in the floor in front of himself. it was only after that, that he noticed that the little red light on the incar camera was on
I have just relised my post under yours Andrews doesn’t…..umm sound too good.No I didn’t see what Brad was doing lol? I meant the Top Fueler !!!!!!hahahaha See that we posted at the same time! Weird!
getting really sick of companies taking vidoes of youtube!!!- i mean its free advertising!!!
neways Woz- why dont you go ahead and finish your year 8 homework…:P:P
hows this for free advertising, after you finish year 5, Arsenal might find it hard to pass year six the sheer fact your comments suk and have to resort typing cheap words wont get you anywhere, ahhh my homework is all done Cheers :-)~
Just insane. The bravery and skill is just beyond comprehension, good to see F1 has come out of its “another one-two for Ferrari” routine.
More like rally racing than F1!
DANG
It proves that F1 drivers are truly the best in the world.
to get a F1 seat is a great achivement already

how about dropping the “my dad is beter than your dad” type argument and talk about the video?
that moment had me holding my breath and laughing in amazement when massa managed to stay infront at the end despite getting pushed off by Kubica!
great racing by the both of them!

I can not beleive Webbers bad luck ,he should have taken up BMWs offer and gone with them !

youtube is free publicity for f1 and you refuse to play along!!!!
Yep, disappointingly the F1 have removed this video and all like it, its a shame because it really was quite amazing.
getting really sick of companies taking vidoes of youtube!!!- i mean its free advertising!!!
