Ford Mondeo XR5 Turbo Spy Shots

By Alborz Fallah |

Our Photographer has caught the upcoming Ford Mondeo XR5 Turbo out and about (or possibly a standard Mondeo with a bodykit and XR5 badges!).

Ford Mondeo XR5 Turbo

This should mean the Volvo five-cylinder turbo engine will power this car and it appears to be through a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Ford Mondeo XR5 Turbo Rear

The wheels are similar to those used in the Orion prototypes and the interior looks pretty nice with a Sony head unit and stereo.

  • Andrew M

this had to be in australia right?
    why no cladding?
do they have release dates yet?

  • Me.

Thats right no cladding, maybe its because it will be come out soon

  • Bavarian Missile

Barrett says FPV aims to double sales within a few years, from its 2006 sales figure of 2044 cars.

I guess by adding more into the FPV range like this it will make it easier for them.

  • Andrew M

    yeah must be very soon.
    has info/stats been released yet?
i dont remember reading, surely they would clad it until the official release where they show it off to press

  • Plutonus

Holy crap, that is one good looking car. Ugly exhaust though… no tips?

  • Andrew M

but this isnt an FPV is it?

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au George

Doesn’t look too bad, but what the hell is it doing in Australia??

  • Bavarian Missile

Hey Andrew this what Barrett said recently to cars guide.

    Quote

“And he says the company wants a range of four-cylinder performance cars, suggesting RS-badged Fords could join the FPV line-up.

“If it has a Ford badge on it and can become a performance vehicle, there’s no reason we shouldn’t look at it,” he says.

FPV needs to dispel the myth that it is just about Falcons, he says.

With Australian production of the Focus starting in 2011, he says there is an opportunity to “think outside the square”.

The arrival of the mid-size Mondeo later this year is also an opportunity. Ford of Europe has badged Focus and some Mondeos as RS models and these badges could end up here.” end quote !

  • Azza

That is a really nice looking car. When you think of Mondeo, you sorta just want to shrug it off and think of something better. But this is brilliant.
Look out Epica… LOL!!! The Epica’s really suck.

  • Bavarian Missile

This car is the same car Clarkson thought was better than a BMW 3 series……

I have found a link to a site that has some pics and a video test from Fifth Gear I love the FORD POWER starter button but I bet Wheels wont will they!

Will put link under this post

  • Bavarian Missile
  • http://. Colonel Klink

HOT CAR… will help Ford’s standing in market as they will have a bigger range of cars. They should get off there backside and fastrack Verve and Kuga to offer a BIGGER RANGE. Please FORD AUST do not get out the many FUGLY American cars sighted on http://www.ford.com and also start getting some decent bloody European styled cars into the Aussie market. This is why Toyota and Holden are above Ford as BIGGER RANGE and not because significantly better cars!

  • Grumps

Local Ford dealer told me the Mondeo is due in October.

I would be interested in the turbo but I would prefer if it came with an auto as well.

  • Nick

I t does look hot, hopefully it won’t be rubbish like other fords. I have seen two regular mondeos, a sedan and a hatch, today around Geelong. Both had those european style plates. So does the one in the pics. Why?

  • http://. Colonel Klink

To play down the impact on people in Australia as people will look at it and think it is not a local car as from overseas and not be alerted that is coming here. Most people would not think it is coming here.

  • Nick

That doesn’t make sense. It is not a local car, it is coming here. And are people really deceived by european plates? The car didn’t drive here from the EU and they say VIC or NSW in big letters. I know if I see european plates I don’t think ‘ooh they must be here from Spain.’

  • smokin’R32

The mondeo isnt due out until october? Saw two on my way back from wollongong today, feel pretty special now. Looked good in the flesh btw.

  • Lee

Why would Ford have 2 cars in their range both called XR5 Turbo (ie. Focus and Mondeo)?

  • Andrew M

if they wanted to try and decieve public eyes or play down it existence here then why have they already fitted the XR5 badges?

ah i see what you meant missile, i thought you were saying this was an FPV. i see you meant it is a candidate

  • Myke

If Holden were smart they’d import the new Vectra coming next year, the Insignia. No way can the Epica compete against this alone.

  • Reckless1

    Holy Crap!!!

Ford has made a car which has only 2 oval shapes evident on it – the front and rear Ford badges. After years of trying to design attractive cars with the oval theme (and failing every time) they have done away with it for this one and the result is a car that looks like a car, even looks good. There is even a triangle shape in use, the tail lights…..what the ????

Pity about the crappy panel fit between the lower rear plastic and the upper rear plastic bumpers and the boot lid, but it is still a Ford.

The Mazda 6 still blasts it away for style.

  • JW

The Mazda 6 still blasts it away for style.

The Mazda 6 is basically a Mondeo.

These pics pretty much confirm that such a car will be sold. Surprising though, when the standard Mondeo isn’t even out yet.

  • Myke

…And a Mazda 3 is ‘basically’ a Focus, but they don’t share their looks whatsoever.

  • Me.

On http://www.ford.com.au/ they say it will come out late 2007 and have auto headlights and auto wind screen wipers.
I wonder what GMH will do and will the Orion Falcon have these fetures?

  • ian

    Hi everyone,
    >ike Smokein R32 I saw one of them near Wolongong. Got a good look at it as it was parked on a look out. Didnt see the driver around. Anyway its pretty nice looking car…i really like the interior. I took a pic..

  • Andrew M

    Me,
the Ba mk 11 had auto headlights. its only the auto wipers that it doesnt have yet unless someone tells me otherwise

  • Bavarian Missile
  • Bavarian Missile

Oh and I also watched the Aussie car program TEST DRIVE this afternoon and surprise surprise they unveiled the Mondeo on it,wouldn’t let you see inside much or hear the engine or test drive it even, just a look from the outside.Oh and to tell us Australia will be getting 3 different engined models one being the 2.00 litre turbo diesel. I hate the droopy exhaust extensions too ,change it please…….

  • BOB

dont you think it may confuse people. with the focus also has a xr5 varient??

  • Paul

I dont think they have a choice, the whole brand of XRs its based on cylinders, no other way unless they intend to change the whole model line up. Just have to realise its the Ford Mondeo XR5 Turbo not the Ford Focus XR5 Turbo.

On ‘Test Drive’, that program would have to be the lamest attempt of a car show. I think they take the pro-Holden thing alittle to far, especially today, with the VE Ute and Holden blimp… not to mention they NEVER critical review anything, its always just positives. Unfortunately Ive never really seen a car that is 100% perfect let alone for example a Hummer which they tried to suggest last week would be at home in city traffic… and didnt fault it 4 speed tranny!

  • Paul

Oh and not even Toyotas are flawless, Toyotas!

  • Bavarian Missile

Yep Paul your right all the Australian Car Shows are lame, but I was just pointing out they mentioned on the show.

  • Paul

    Very impartial of you…

  • John

WOW it’s got the new LCD instrument cluster!!! I didn’t really think Australia would bring it in!!!!

    http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-mondeo/159412/

    WOW!!

But, I’d still get an Orion though, it better suits my needs (bigger capacity engine & backseat/boot space)

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au tony

forget the Falcon Ford – just go with a full Mondeo model range

  • Petar

Hopefully the new mondeo turbo will come out in a auto version for the ppl who can’t drive manual.

  • Tony

i have seena XR5 in sydney and it didnt have a droopy exhaust, it was black looked really good.

Maybe this car is a diesel dressed up as an XR5 to confuse? diesels usually have a droopy exhaust for emmissions?

  • Andrew M

why are people seeing these every where if they havent been released?
and not just in melbourne either

  • Myke

Test Drive is one of those shows that just vomit out sunrise, complementing very car they review ffs, even a Jeep Patriot. All well and good to suggest a cars merits but we also want to know why we shouldn’t buy it.

  • Tony M

I do believe the new Mondeo might put a dent in the Camry/Aurion range of cars. With the Turbo 5 cylinder, Turbo diesel and the 2 litre motor, Ford have conservative drivers, to power drivers and performance drivers covered. I believe it might even take the spot light of the new VE ute, even though they are a different market.

The only worry I have is will the new Mondeo take some of the sales away from the new Ford “Orion” when it is released.

  • Mike Jackson

I drove the new Mondeo in England, 2.0tdci Titanium…what a car, it drove fantastically well, better than any BMW/Aud/Merc ive ever driven. It looks solid and very well built. I work at a Ford dealer in QLD, we still have no news on availibility or prices, Ford havent let us order any yet so our guess is that Ford will give a certain amount to all dealers. we have a Ford drive day end of Oct so we should now more by then

  • http://www.ford.com Mark

Scoop photo’s??? for even more top secret photo’s and specs, try here – http://www.ford.com no cladding because most of the world is already driving it..

  • Jase

I saw a black one of these driving around the suburbs of Melbourne

  • Andrew

Mark is right – there is no cladding on the Mondeo because it was shown at last year’s Melbourne Motor Show and has been able to be viewed ever since. These vehicles are part of a testing and running in program of approximately 30 vehicles that will be available for test drives before the official on-sale date in November.

  • Benjie

    Mark:

Nobody is claiming these are scoop shots…

They are the first photos of the Mondeo on Australian roads though.

  • fil

Petar said “Hopefully the new mondeo turbo will come out in a auto version for the ppl who can’t drive manual.”

I say, hopefully it doesn’t come in an auto version. If you can’t drive a manual then – let’s be honest – you can’t really drive. So perhaps a Camry Sportivo would be more to your tastes.

  • Bavarian Missile

I am with you fil on that one,but I guess if have a disability and a love of good cars you shouldn’t miss out either.

  • Ted

Sexy car, will be on my shopping list, shit’s all over any Holdenwoo ever built….

  • Paul

fil buddy when you have dual glutch gearboxes which can shift quicker then any man I think its alittle harsh suggesting a car should only come in manual. Not to mention, using the argument I have heard from others here lol… what do F1 use? Although personally Id go for manual, I dont think autos are that bad and certainly from fords perspective it would be wise, just like the wrx should have come in auto… to appeal to a wider audience.

On the looks, personally I am not a huge fan of the rear. Front on very nice, the rear well… the exhausts are ridiculous, that HAS to be changed and the brake lights I dont rate them extremely highly in terms of looks. Not things that would stop me from buying one if other features are up to standards, but far from a perfect vehicle in terms of looks… at this stage.

  • fil

So Paul buddy should Ferrari make their cars 7-seaters so as to appeal to a wider audience? Should Mazda MX5s be more wheelchair accessible? Maybe the Mini shouldn’t be ‘mini’ at all, in order to satisfy the requirements of Mr and Mrs Average from the suburbs who need more space.

Although in a way it defies economic reasoning, not every car should be chasing every single market. When my friend bought the previous model VW Golf RS32, one of the things he loved about it was that it wasn’t available as a 5-door (or automatic for that matter). He said that he would have loved his car less if he saw one being used by a bored housewife to drop the kids off at school and collect the groceries from Coles. I must say that I have to agree with him.

However, the original point I was making was more about people who CAN’T drive a manual, as opposed to those who perhaps choose to drive an auto. My sister has a DSG Golf GTi on order which I believe are very good indeed. Many of my friends drive autos, but you can always tell those who never learned in a manual as they don’t understand how gearing works, and thus propel their occupants forward and backward in a sea-sickness inducing motion. These people are not car enthusiasts by any stretch of the imagination. They are like the people who buy 2wd Territorys because they want people to think that they are more outdoorsy, adventurous and therefore more interesting than they really are.

  • Geo

This is NOT the ST or the XR5. It is just a normal Mondeo with the sports kit (similar to that in Casino Royal) which is available through Ford Dealers in Europe. The badge just came from a Focus XR5. The actual German ST is still testing with camo on and the Aussie re-badge would be driving around un-disguised and with license plates??! No way

  • http://. Colonel Klink

Paul, mate it is not brake lights you refer to, but rear light cluster. All I can say is different and bit ? too from me, but it works fine in this colour and looks different from all. The Aurion rear is similar to most! Must admit Aurion rear is cool and very classy how sides of car cut into top of boot lid! This car is in front of Camry / Aurion me thinks a wee tad and will be interesting comparo when the likes of Mazda 6 struts in off the catwalk with the class and pizzaz it offers!

  • Paul

Well I think we differ on this, personally I think the rear of the Aurion is its worst part, I like the Camrys better. Im not saying the Mondeo is bad, but it doesnt appeal to me personally.

Btw I know you dont rate the TRD, go to carsales and check out the 2 that are for sale, one has some good pics of it… honestly it should change your mind it looks amazing and the rear looks 10x better then the normal Aurion!

  • euroFordguy

I’m with you Paul. I prefer the look of the Camry over the Aurion. The drivetrain of the Aurion is killer though! Shame the Camry 4cyl is such a slug..

I think for families on a budget, a camry is a very attractive proposition. I like something a little more “sporty” though and would prefer something like this new mondeo or Mazda 6 when they’re released.

Hopefully ford will consider a 3.2 V6 version of the mondeo, even though I know it will cannabalise Orion sales.

  • Tony M

Have a look at this site:

    http://www.carsales.com.au/testdrive/this_week.html

Here’s some more info on the new Mondeo. As I wrote before, I think the Camry/Aurion range might get a bit of a hammering, but I also worry about the Orion because I believe the new Mondeo is not that much smaller than the Orion. We’ll have to wait and see.

This car looks like a class act. I do believe there are a lot a similar lines in this car that will be highlighted on the Orion.

  • Petar

To Fil you can have your Toyota Camry Sportivo. I’ll stick to my ford Laser until the new Mondeo comes out.

  • Bavarian Missile

So whats the go? NZ get the Mondeo info released before Australia?

    Found this on the F/Forums

FORD NEW ZEALAND ANNOUNCES MONDEO LINE-UP AND PRICING
AUCKLAND, New Zealand, 25 September 2007 The dramatic all-new German-engineered Mondeo, Ford of Europe’s most technically advanced car ever and the first production version of Ford’s kinetic design styling, will be on sale from $35,990 in New Zealand later this year.
“The new Ford Mondeo is a smart eye-catching car that offers a huge array of sensational features and thoughtful attributes,” said Ford New Zealand Marketing Manager Barbara MacGregor.
“Mondeo is an intuitive car that will cater to all levels of driver involvement thanks to its superb driving dynamics and appealing variety of powertrain options.”
Depending on the model selected, Mondeo will be available in sedan, hatch or wagon bodystyles, with manual or automatic transmissions and one of two different trim levels – standard and Zetec.
“Customers can also chose from a new 2.3-litre Duratec 4-cylinder petrol engine coupled to the new Durashift 6-speed automatic transmission with a Sport mode or the 2.0-litre 4 cylinder petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual,” said MacGregor.
“Premium quality materials, exemplary driving dynamics and an extensive feature list are all hallmarks of the smart new Europeani engineered Mondeo, which will introduce new levels of refinement, comfort and safety to the segment.
“The new Mondeo features an impressive no-compromise array of active and passive safety technologies including Dynamic Stability Control (DCS) and new driver’s knee airbag as standard across the range,” said MacGregor.
“At a recommended retail price of just $35,990, the 2.0-litre manual sedan Mondeo will appeal to customers who want a wide range of modern safety, comfort and convenience features in a stylish car that offers class leading driving dynamics.”
Both powertrain combinations are available in either a classic 4 door sedan or 4 door wagon which both feature a strong silhouette with the A-pillar angle blending through to each of the bodystyles.
“Customers who want a sporty vehicle will love the new Mondeo Zetec 2.3-litre hatch – with standard features 16 inch alloy wheels, dual zone climate control, a 6 stack CD player and an upgraded trim package, it brings high levels of comfort and a quality feel,” said MacGregor.
Customers can further option their Mondeo Zetec with a Sports Pack which includes 17 inch alloy wheels, a sporty body kit and leather trim.
Ford’s distinctive and dynamic kinetic design styling language, expressing energy in motion, creates a sleek and dynamic profile and delivers a design presence that signals power and grace.
“Mondeo is an eye-catching design which dares to be different, yet achieves a level of sophistication and poise usually expected in a more expensive vehicle,” said MacGregor.
The Ford Mondeo has always been acclaimed for its driving quality and the new Mondeo will extend the model’s reputation in this area.
It combines sporty driving dynamics with a refined ride and minimal noise, vibration and harshness.
The Mondeo development team also paid special attention to the car’s suspension and steering system. The major modifications include a wider track; optimized front suspension design, new rear suspension design, isolated rear subframe and optimized steering system.
“The new Mondeo will bring prospective buyers to Ford showrooms and create a whole new wave of Mondeo enthusiasts,” said MacGregor.
“Since it was revealed in Europe in March, we have been inundated with enquiries from customers wanting to know more about this exciting car.

“As a result, we have launched an interactive Mondeo microsite on our popular http://www.ford.co.nz website where customers can register for exclusive access to information about the new Mondeo including pricing and specification details,” concluded MacGregor.

Model Recommended Retail Price (including GST)
    2.0l Mondeo manual sedan $35,990
    2.3l Mondeo automatic sedan $37,990
    2.0l Mondeo manual wagon $37,490
    2.3l Mondeo automatic wagon $39,490
2.3l Mondeo Zetec automatic hatch $40,990
2.3l Mondeo Zetec automatic hatch with Sports Pack $45,490

  • Andrew M

i suppose it is because NZ has been a bit more loyal to the mondeo name plate. mondeos have been a main plate in NZ for a while

  • ebf

If that’s the specs we’re getting in Aus, I’ll be very disapointed. Only manual in the lowest spec version? Meh.

  • woz

The 2.3l Mondeo automatic sedan $37,990 nz dollars, only a couple more grand and you get an auto with extra 300cc that’s a quality bargain,

  • Tony M

It must be remembered that New Zealand does not have a car manufactoring industry like we have in Australia. Let alone selling a lot of imported cars (Australia may sell 1,000,000 cars this year). The more you sell the lower the unit price may be. In other words there is more to bargain with.
All I can say is, lets wait till Ford Australia reveals the Mondeo (Australian specs) here before comparing what you don’t know with what you do know.

  • Tony C

This car’s design looks ugly to me (especially the headlights and the rear), but, looks are a subjective matter. Others might like it, but I certainly do not.

  • Rocket3

    Tony C,
you are right on the subjective matter of cars. but believe me when you see the new Mondeo in the flesh it is an awesome car. not awesome as a lambo in bright orange paintwork but awesome in the details.
many things are not transported from the 3D to the 2D and this is especially true in the case of the Mondeo. also the interior size and exterior size is almost equivalent to the current BF Falcon so should finally give a real world alternative to the very roomy Camry.

  • Toyota Paul

Yeah in many cases you have to see the car in the metal, the WRX imo is one example. Although I think the Mondeo looks great in photos, more than likely look even better in real life. On one of the motorshows as well they showed abit of its interior, that looked quite classy as well. Just need to change those exhausts, I dont know who that would appeal to… maybe its just like that for the test mule (one would hope).

  • Rocket3

i agree that the exhausts look a little dodgy in the photos, but i believe they are of a stainless style finish, but there looks to me to be a bit of glare on the lense of the camera. hopefully look better in person.
just hope they dont do a mazda and honda and put a large tip on a small exhaust. looks dodgy and everyone can see that.

  • Hendrik

Two things noticed on this ‘XR5′ model.

16in wheels and down facing exhaust tips…

this is either badged xr5 for testing purposes or ford have got it terribly wrong.

    my 2c

  • Rocket3

    Hendrik,

The alloys on the XR5 are actually 18″ alloys. These are viewable on the ford uk website if you download the brochure. I believe this could be a Titanium Model with the Sports pack option in UK specs.

  • Andrew M

i dont know that the NZ pricing is much to go off when it gets here.
in NZ the listing prices seem to be about $10K dearer than what we pay here across the entire ford range.
even cause the dollar is a factor id say the mondeo might even start at $25,990

  • Jake

this car is basically the same as the Euro Mondeo with the Sport Pack and the XR5 engine. Shame on For Oz!

  • Rocket3

Why shame on Ford OZ Jake? It is the Mondeo from europe with the sport pack, but it is almost the top of the range model from what i can see. it has the keyless start system as evidenced by the start button on the dash near the stereo and yes it will run the XR5 Turbo motor from the Focus in it. Why not call it an XR5 Turbo. sounds better than Titanium X doesn’t it.

  • Me.

Of corse it’s not australian, all the Holdrolet hatchback cars are not Australian too. I don’t know what your on about jake.

  • Tony M

I notice so many people making negative comments about the down facing exhausts. Here’s some food for thought.

In my younger days I had a Jaguar S type (year 1966) which had dual straight exhaust. They looked great but if you put something big in the boot which meant the boot had to stay open while you were driving you finished up getting the exhaust gases coming into the passenger compartment.

What you might find is the down turned exhaust on the Mondeo are that way so you minimise any chance of exhaust gases in the passenger area. Oh you could argue that there are a lot of cars with dual straight exhaust out there now but I bet no one has had their boot open while they are driving.

  • Me.

WHY ARE PEOPLE DISS’N THE MONDEO BECAUSE IT HAS DROP PIPES?

At least it has twin pipes, arsehole Holdrolet fans!!!!!!!!!!!

  • woz

The pipes look cool that wouldn’t stop me from buying the Mondeo or any car, you can easily modify the pipes to your satisfaction and from looking at the Mondeo pictures not a hard custom job here at all.

  • Bavarian Missile

Very true……..you could change them ,and I would blah… They look crap. Heaps of extensions to choose from out there so why have droopy………? Droopy is just not cool…….in any ummm conditions. Some Viagra my help them perhaps!

  • Mike Jackson

i have news….no wagon, no manual other than XR5T, 4 models in the range, prices are very good, XR5T cheaper than falcon XT!!!!!

  • Bavarian Missile

My Comment is still awaiting moderation on this blog? From last night! Thanks for the news Mike, where did you hear it from?

  • ebf

Cheaper than a Falcon XT? That would make the Focus XR5 more expensive than the Mondeo XR5 – sorry, I find that very, very hard to beleive.

  • Me.

May be $40,000 for mondeo XR5 turbo?

  • Me.

Holden said “no one will buy an expensive european car” like Mondeo.
If thats so why is there BMW, Volvo (etc) in Australia then?

  • Andrew M

mondeo XR5T cheaper than a falcon XT??? i doubt it
maybe you had wires crossed and meant base mondeo cheaper that XT.

  • Me.

Mick Jackson, Where did you get your info from?

No,no,no!!! Let me guess, a 13 year old!
    Am I right, am I right…
    I’m apsalootly right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next time don’t listen to 14 Y/Os, because I kmow alot of them that lie about cars, like Anton Vlahos.

  • Phyl

I hope they sort out the AWD drivetrain for the focus. Rumours are that they working on the S40 AWD platform which abviously uses the same V5T engine doubt it go into the mondeo though.

The mondeo looks good in the shots, another mid size choice. Normal engines should be way better than some others on the market.

  • Mike Jackson

Prices start 29990 + OTR upto 41990 + OTR, 6speed Diesel AUTO in TDCi mmodel

  • Rocket3

$29,990 for 2.3 auto. What great value.

  • Mike Jackson

6 speed auto in lx,zetec and tdci, 6speed manual in XR5T. lx sedan only,XR5T hatch only, sedan and hatch in others. shame no manuals in lower models

  • Me.

    HA,HA Mike Jackson!
The XR5 Turbo is not cheaper than the XT Falcon after all!!!!

  • Oz.

I have not yet seen a Mondeo XR5T on the roads, but the base models look nice on the road. So I wonder what the XR5T looks like.

  • Nardia

    Does anyone know the price??

  • Bavarian Missile

Nardia the guys have just done a road test on one try doing a search for it at the top of the page !

  • Simon

That all sounds good, fair comments too …….
