    Personally i find the design a bit old, and especially the interior. But most of all those ruffled leather seats, thats just plain tacky. I think i would go for one of its European competitors.

      In the last 2 years almost every other manufacturer was slashing prices and upping equipment level except Honda. Cars made in Thailand should not be so expensive

      The competition is what has killed the CR-V’s rating. Shoppers these days have an excellent and competitive selection of softroaders to choose from.

        Excellent article BTW Karl, really honest. I’m glad someone said something about the looks of the CR-V, which I have hated ever since it’s unveiling. However, it seems to be a well made and competitive car and good for those who can stand the styling and bought one.

    Typical Honda, fantastic build quality, gutless engine. When will the Honda engineers figure people don’t give a toss about F1 inspired, rev happy engines. For everyday use people want torque, at low revs. Turbo petrol or diesel, get with the program Honda.

    The pic of the dash shows average fuel consumption of 14.3l/100km. Makes the Territory turbo look ok.

      The fuel consumption you see on the dash is not a true indication because you don’t know how/if it was driven. A vehicle sitting idle while burning fuel will increase its fuel consumption because no distance was travelled. Expect to see around 10-11L. It’s quite a thrifty.

      As a happy ex-owner of the Honda CRV and 7 years of reliable transport, the CRV is a fantastic all-rounder wagon. Yes, it doesn’t have a pretty face and the design/interior layout is more family oriented than the sporty Mazda CX-7. It’s cheap to run and maintain too. All mine ever need was the regular servicing and it runs like a clockwork.

        i agree the last CRV was great, but given the current competition, Honda needs to step up the game a lot…(like australian idol) otherwise, it would be relegated.

    How does this compare to the Mazda CX7? Steering, handling, ride quality etc? And if you had a choice would you go for the CRV or the CX7?

      Dynamically, there’s not much in it between the CX-7 and the CR-V but the turbo CX-7’s fuel consumption is a worry. I would go for either the diesel CX-7, or the 2WD CX-7 (which represents excellent value for money).

        Agree. In terms of exterior and interior, I say cx-7 is a lot better. Current cr-v is quite old now, can’t wait to see what honda can come up with in the next gen. For cx-7 2wd classic, now it has a lot of features other brands can’t offer on entry level, things like reverse camera are quite handy. And the big alloys worth quite a lot.

        I drove one recently from hornsby to F3, 3 adults with air-con, it doesn’t feel lack of power at all. But of course don’t expect too much for a entry level 2wd s(whatever)v, or wagon?

          I believe that a 2wd Nissan Dualis Ti is amazing value for money as well……The features that it gets is truly worth looking !!!!!
          Leather seats, panoramic sunroof, Bluetooth and heaps more for $32k ……

          The only prob 2.0l engine and can struggle when fully loaded…It needed an upgrade or a diesel….

          To me ,the facelifted crv looks outdated already…..

          The crv is a no no for me, but am tossing up a cx 7 2wd or a dualis 2wd Ti model !!!!!!!!

    Karl, is there any reason that you are aware of as to why Mazda don’t offer the diesel sport cx7 with a sunroof? Nobody seems to know why? Seems odd given it’s std in the luxury sports.

      This is only a guess, but it might be to save weight. Due to the fact diesels are heavier than their petrol counterpart.

      Sounds odd, but I know that’s what Toyota did with the Prius, if you want 17′ alloys, the ‘moonroof’ is deleted to save weight and hence save fuel.

      Classic, I have been told that the diesel produces a lot of torque and that the CX7 body needs the metal in the roof for extra strength. There is a company in the SE suburbs here in Melbourne that have a massively good reputation and fit sunroofs for most dealers. I was in recently picking up my sons car and overheard a lady with a diesel CX7 being told they can’t fit one. When she had gone, I asked why and that was the reason given. The owner of the company had been told this by Mazda Aus and requested not to fit any.

      The double-opener on the tailgate is a clever design ever since the first CRV came out and Honda has stuck to it since. Great for dropping off shopping bags without the need to open the heavy tailgate. The CRV Diesel engine has been available on the UK market for several years now. We just don’t get it here.

    Australia’s compact SUVs are such a boring lot…almost all of them are underpowered petrol-engined blahmobiles (RAV4, CR-V, Forester etc). Sure they’re practical and reliable, but have no pizazz. You have to spend alot (optioned Tiguan, Freelander 2, X1) to get something somewhat exciting unfortunately. Where’s Australia’s Ford Kuga, Skoda Yeti, diesel CR-V/RAV4/Dualis etc etc etc. A spec upgrade on all models would be alright too (except Koleos, I know a facelift is in June to upgrade the heavily-populated feature list).

    This CR-V was boring when it came out, tis still boring now. As I said it has no diesel (I know the diesel is Euro-only, but that’s crap! Where’s the world-planning!?), a manual only on the base model/no manual mode on the auto, made in Thailand build quality/made in Japan price and a friggin boring drive. I’d like a Honda Pilot from the US instead of this crap…

      Not sure about your reasoning that a diesel model means fun. Sure the better torque and economy are a bonus, but fun? I agree about the Kuga and Yeti being needed here now.

          Many of these are available overseas as diesels but most don’t have auto trans. I guess the companies figure the cost of importation, certification and supporting the cars with spares and servicing is not justified with low sales. Look at the diesel Mazda6. Its probably the better car of the petrol and diesel and is certainly quicker. Same at Subaru. But the sales of the cars is almost insignificant due to no auto availability.

    To say this vehicle doesn’t have a 5 star safety rating is untrue. The MY07 (that ran from 2007 to 2010) didn’t have curtain airbags in the base model and therefore didn’t qualify for 5 stars even though it did exceed the required safety test. The MY10 model makes curtain airbags standard on the base model and when re-tested this car will comfortably be rated at 5 stars. I enjoy reading these articles for the journalists opinion as much as anything, but I would like to see facts checked before putting down any manafacturers. Everyone has different opionions, but facts are facts.


    Looks like Australia get the boring cars which other countries do not want and if we complain enough maybe we get something. In New Zealand somehow they got the latest model or better. I bought in 2006 a Honda Jazz the same in NZ had a disc brake mine was drum!!

      That was 2006. I would not be surprise if the 2010 Jazz now comes with standard 4 wheel disc brakes. Manufacturers like to hold back something for the next model update. Take the current Nissan Murano for example, released in 208, the luxury TI version does not even come with a sunroof for a 60 grand vehicle while it is already available on the US version. For this reason, it was off my shopping list. Come 2010 and the updated TI now comes with a sunroof.

      car makers need economy of scale to bring all sorts of cars with options.

      sadly in oz, we haven’t got that. 26mil pple in the whole wide land. in californi state, it’s already 30mil pple.

      how u got the disc brakes jazz in NZ is a matter that defies all logic. maybe there are more sheeps there. LOL….

    In the UK, the top of the line CR-V comes with 18″ alloys, and you can even get optional 19s. Here in Australia, you cannot even get 18″ as an option. Their top of the line model also has full colour coding on the bumpers and side moldings, while ours has plastic grey cladding (most noticeable at the bottom of the doors). I think the Australian model is poor value, even after the recent price drop (the previous price of $42,290 for the Sport was absolutely insane).

    the problem with the CR-V, is its crap non working on demand awd system,
    and the fact its built in Thailand not Japan so its quality is second rate
    compared to the Japanese built suv’s eg(forester, cx-7)

      The hydraulic on-demand awd system used in series 1 & 2 have been known to kick in too late. Honda have since switched the system to electric which should be comparable to its competitors. Just because it is now built in Thailand doesn’t mean the quality is second-rate. It’s all about economy of scale.

        I have tried a new CRV on a dirt hill climb with a new forester
        as well, the CRV even with a fast run up would only get so far
        then start scrabling its front wheels by the time the rear wheels
        kicked in enough for grip it was to late it was stuck and rolling back
        down the hill!!!, The forester went straight up!, even stopping the forester
        half way up and taking of again it would still make it to the top!!
        (so much for an improved on demand system, NO THANKS)
        and yes you can tell the diffence between Jap built and Thailand built,
        just look at a accord euro compared to an accord!!!

          Sorry Stevo, the Honda on demand AWD is NOT comparable to any of the other softroaders.

          It is next to useless compared to a Rav4, Forester, Sorento, Sportage, Tiguan etc

          OSU811, Your comments smack of ignorance. The Accord Euro is definetely a better built vehicle than the standard Accord , but only because it is also more expensive. I challenge you to look with an open mind at a standard petrol Civic (Thai built) and compare it side by side to the Civic Hybrid (Japan built). You will not tell the difference in build quality. When will people realise that it is not WHERE you build a car that matters but rather HOW it is built. All these monkeys that seem to think that Mazda, Honda etc building cars in Thailand means that they are automatically no good need a slap. Compare the 2010 Corolla to the 2010 Civic. Do you really think the Japan build vs Thai build argument stands up there?

            have a look at the quality, fit and finish of an impreza compared to
            civic/corolla and you will see the difference!

            Gareth, the fact that a car is made in Thailand may not necessarily automatically qualify it as an inferior car. However, I think OSU811 is closer to the ball on this. Toyota gets by on a reputation, this isn’t to say they don’t still make good cars, but their standard has most certainly dropped since out sourcing their manufacturing. Japanese brands made good names for themselves being made in Japan. It’s long been acknowledged that the Japanese are forerunners when it comes to mixing reliability and build quality without the european price tags. Now Japanese brands are selling out their heritage in order to make more money out of their cars by out sourcing to the lowest bidder. Have you followed Toyotas recent history? After a good history of reliability look at their recalls in recent times. You compare 10′ Corolla and 10′ Civic – as OSU811 pointed out already, neither are made in Japan therefore your argument is void. As also mentioned, the Euro vs Accord argument is also incorrect. The Euro is a FAR superior car when it comes to build quality, panel gaps etc. Having driven all manner of cars Hondas used to be known for having the best gearshifts in the business (crx, civic, integra, prelude, euro, s2000), their Thai cars are now as rubbery as the next brand. The cars will still sell even if they’re not the same, they’ll still remain decent cars, but the recent they’re manufactured outside Japan is simply the dollars and the old adage comes into play – you get what you pay for! Just ask Toyota..

      I work at Toyota and I don’t know where you got your information from but I can 100% confirm that the Corolla sold in Australia is sourced from Japan. To touch on Scott’s comment about the gearboxes can you please look at the cars you mentioned. Integra, CRX and S2000 where all at the time marketed as sports cars. Cars like the Euro and Civic etc where by no means sports cars, but they have been marketed as a sportier alternative to the competition. The fact that gearboxes aren’t as tight now has nothing to do with where they are built but by what kind of car they are. Have a look at the current Civic Type R that is sourced from the UK. This is still every bit as good, if not better than any of the gearboxes before it. I’m really glad that manufacturers don’t recruit from the Internet Community because frankly, most of the posters here don’t have a clue. It makes me chuckle that Hyundai and Kia have recently become the darlings of the Internet Community (“Quick Marge, to the bandwagon!”) when they are producing cars in countries like the Korea and India, yet for a brand like Mazda to move the 2’s production to Thailand is considered by some to be the end of the world. Production moving around the world from all sorts of brands, in all sorts of industries, doesn’t mean they are selling out but rather expanding to meet the needs of a global market. Most BMW’s aren’t built in Germany, most Porsche’s aren’t built in Germany, and let’s not get started on VW. If Ferrari wanted to build one of their cars in the middle if Korea, or Thailand or India they could produce it to the identical standard to one of their cars produced in Italy. It is often referred to as globalisation, or some people may even call it simple economics.

    You take what you want and leave what you don’t want to hear. There are good cars coming out of most continents these days, you’re right. I’m saying if you compare (from the same brand) a car that was built in Japan they’re of a higher quality control than the same brand being made in Thailand. Most of the experienced motoring journalists elude to this when they drive examples of this and i’m sure they’re not all hired from internet communities so you don’t need to worry about that.

    Yes some of the cars I mentioned are sports cars, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t sports cars with poor shifts. Civics and euros may have a sportier feel than some other cars in their class but this is due to the fact they handle well, have nice smooth revving engines and good gearboxes. They’re not made as sports cars, they’re just well engineered and drive better than most of their competition.

    New UK civic type r is not a bad car, but if you’re talking about gearshift (which you mentioned), i think you’ll find they’re using a Japanese Engine and Japanese Gearbox.

    Again i’ll stress, i never said cars made in other parts of the world can’t be good. I was stating that where a car was previously japanese built and has then gone to be manufactured elsewhere the quality normally takes a hit. Again look at toyota..

    Your comment regarding ferrari is ridiculous- build a factory in ethiopia and have them build the cars under the same brand and you’ll find ferraris being sold on ebay. This is nothing against Ethiopia or any other nation on Gods fine earth, it is however just a view that countries have their strengths. Thai makes damn good food, not damn good cars. Japan is the leader in electronics and things and has been forever, China tries and makes cheap imitations but they don’t last as long. So do a plentitude of other asian nations.

    You’re right, off shore manufacturing is about economy. It’s cheaper. But it doesn’t result in the same quality of car.

    the main difference with the quality in the Japanese built cars is
    A. what Scott touches on is they are the leaders in electronics
    and making electronics reliable.
    B. Is the HUMAN difference, its the workers commitment and work ethics that
    make the Japanese the quality leaders, they literally live to work,
    not work to live like we do! and you cant fabricate that in just any
    country! eg(Australia, USA) cars are average built because of the HUMAN
    content in the manufacturing!!

    Yes Scott is correct in saying the TYPE R civic engine is hand built in
    JAPAN, and the gearbox is Japanese too!
    Also as Scott said previous generation Japanese built civics, yes even the
    standard models!, had a great feeling/shifting short gearbox!
    why is it to much to ask to have that pleasure even in a std model??

    I’ve had this exact model for two weeks now and couldn’t be any more happier. Have come from a RAV4 to this and I can say the build quality / ride of the Honda is miles ahead. While you will not win many races at the lights you will get one of the smoothest / sure footed comfortable drives out there compared to many other models in this class. 2010 VW Tiguan cabin space was a joke if your 6 ft, great if your 5 ft nothing, the RAV was just out dated in appearance and drive and not that much zipper than the CR-V, and for the CX-7 well that was a people mover rather than a small off roader. Honda seating is brillant, front and back with all the comforts of the driver sorted in the luxury model without being ostentatious. The mid model 2010 upgrade appearance wise IMO looks more Euro than Asian inside and out. All in all one of the best in this class, take it for a spin at your local dealer and you will see why.

    Would have thought Honda would have done something about the ugly front end after all the negative press it has had. The drop in sales wouldn’t be a result of this would it, ask Ford Australia about sales and ugly cars ie AU Falcon.

    Ex-owner of auto Luxury 2008 CRV, I am pleased to say. Well built, sharp handling for a car, but otherwise a very disappointing vehicle. I was just glad to see the end of it. Too slow and thirsty. Actual equipment level very poor considering they are made on the cheap (low cost labour). Just revs its guts out when pushed. Real fuel consumption long term was 11.5L/100. I found resale very bad, maybe due to falling popularity.
    Replaced it with VW, could not be happier so far.

      What a laugh. A VW. Are you still happy? Wait for your first 40 degree day and you are idling in traffic. Talk about going from most reliable to most unreliable. Mine doesn’t rev it’s guts out when pushed. It just goes, very fast and road holding….. Unbelievable. Glued to the road. I agree with fuel consumption but you will never get good fuel consumption with an suv and it’s accentuated with a small fuel tank. Also the Honda shape is deceptive. It’s actually quite big and very roomy inside. If you park it next to a Camry or a Hilux you truly appreciate how big it is. (dwarfs a camry). Why no diesel?

    The worst part of the CR-V is the C-pillars. They block more visibility than necessary, which is bad especially when reversing from a parking lot.

    The double grille is not to everyone’s taste. It doesn’t handle as well as the RAV but it has a tailgate that opens upwards which is good, unlike the Toyota which is on the side.

    Overall, the ix35 is the one to beat. Hyundai are really serious in cars and if the rest don’t pick up their game, this brand will soon dominate.

    i own a 2007 crv 6spd manual. i agree that it is no tyre burning street machine, but that aside, it has proven to be very reliable, comfortable and ample room for the family. i achieve an average of 9.4litres per 100klms, which is not bad considering the car weighing over 1500kgs. Highway travelling is its forte, due to the extra flexibility of the 6 speed gearbox. it is an engine that does its best with manual gearbox.

    After owning a 2007 Mazda 6 diesel wagon, I bought a 2010 CRV and couldn’t be happier. It is nicer to drive, roomier, and quieter. Compared with the Mazda it is way better designed and built, with better quality materials. The ONLY problem is the fuel consumption. After averaging 6.8 in the Mazda over 60,000 kms, I am getting 9.5 in the Honda. The diesel engine available in the british CRV is one of the best around and I cannot understand why Honda hasn’t made it available here. Let’s hope they have sense enough to bring it in with the all new 2012 CRV.

    I love the current and think it looks great. As for euro trash and Nissan etc. Give me a break. It’s a Honda. Up there with Toyota ito reliability. The Peugeot is a remodeled Mitsubishi. (another Hobby car). Subaru is stone age. As for the interior looking dated. Depends. If you comparing it to a teeny bopper disco on wheels then I guess so. I’ve never found the interior lacking and I hate garish colours in a car. eg. ice blue interior dash lighting, pretend metal made out of plastic etc. I’ve taken mine off road and I don’t mean onto a lawn or a dirt road. It’s done some pretty serious declines and inclines and deep dry river sand (once I fgured out to leave it in second and switch off vsa. It’s an automatic) I have some gripes that apply just as much to Toyota. Where are the frigging Diesels!!! I’m not buying another petrol car so wake up. As for the new 2012 CRV. Is Honda mad? It looks like Dodge Hoon mobile. Precisely the market that doesn’t buy Hondas.
