  • FalconUte?

I think your car-pet [and Jakes02'S] have to have a good hard look at themselves, 80 sales for scoda is very poor, i would be screaming if i had a dealership for that brand.

The prices are around the same as a VW, might as well just buy a VW as the punters are, dump the brand bring in SEAT and sell them at a *real* price where the market is.

Could be worse, SAAB = 0!

    • Myke

If VW Australia can’t get the pricing right with Skoda, why would it make any difference bring SEAT and expecting them to be priced competitively? If anything SEAT would be the same, if not more expensive than Skoda.

    • Able

And bringing in SEAT would do what exactly? SEATS are even more quirky than Skodas are (think about it, the Altea, Toledo and Leon look exactly the same are all sized the same and are supposed to be in different markets) and the bad rap from the previous SEAT excursion would still exist. Pointless idea, get a life, make fun of some other car company. This is just a bad month anyway, Skoda sold 140-150 cars afew months ago!

To Skoda Australia I say this, as someone whose just ordered an Octavia RS, you need to seriously start advertising more. It was my car knowledge that brought my to the excellence of the Skoda range, not one thing that you advertised caught my eye. A simple one ad every few weeks in the Herald Drive on weekends isn’t enough, it needs to be constant. You NEED to get the Fabia here. I don’t care about the supply issues, that’s crap. Get a from $18k low/high/RS spec petrol/diesel combo with a range of colours, in hatch and wagon and put it on sale. This car will do VERY well.

Get the Yeti here NOW! It will also do well. I know the Superb Wagons are arriving at the end of this month, so no issue there. Make the base Octavia the 1.8TSI/2.0TDI as well, they’re both excellent engines and much better than the crappy 1.6MPI/1.9TDI and bring in a luxury spec Octavia. Superbs need to be cheaper. Do all that and I reckon sales will grow substantially.

      • pirakavezok

I fully agree. Skoda need to bring in better engines and rationalise their pricing. Add this to adequate advertising, the brand should fly. Otherwise, it might as well quit the Oz market.

        • ABMPSV

Yes you are right but it is very hard to start in a very competitive and small market like Australia. Just imagane you selling Commodore or Falcon in Germany!! In February was 145 model which sold less in Germany than Skoda here. Here is info from a Czech Skoda website with engine choices. I agree with price I was hoping it will be at least $2000 cheaper than Jetta.

‘SKODA CURSE’? SKODA deserves in Australia just what she is getting. After all, it was the SKODA’s superb howitzer guns at Gallipoli (google out and read: SKODA + GALLIPOLI)that massacred 20,000 troops of ANZACs infantry.

    • ABMPSV

Toyota had the same sales figures when they started in Australia. Wait and see.

      • ADLover

        For how long?

        • Frenchie

          20 – 30 years!

    • Deco

I’m confused as to how Smart sold 1 more car than Skoda =/…

    • F1MotoGP

Skoda will slowly improve. In England they had a hard start just like Germany. Feb 2010 sale figures for Skoda in Germany is very good.
      Superb 773
      Roomster 770
      Yeti 883
      Fabia 4,005
      Octavia 3,487

    • jojo

Skoda sales only occasionally spike from about the usual 70-80 units a month when Europecar place a fleet order or their having a fire sale of old 2007/08 stock

It doesnt help their image either when their long term test car provided to Wheels magazine (Octavia) suffered a DSG failure and needed a new gearbox at 7,000km and also failed to start on numerous occasions due to poor electrical connections.

I’d say the whole thing was a PR nigthmare as the Mazda 6 and Honda Euro Accord performed flawlessly throughout the same long term tests.

  • Neil

i30 is really creating a storm – no simple task to outsell the 3 & Corolla.

    • Deco

      It really is amazing.

      • ADLover

But more Austalian bought Toyota HiLux, Yes TOYOTA !!!
Buha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

      • Alex II

Hyundai is the company Toyota should be really worried about, the new Sonata (i45) will do to the Camry what the i30 is doing to the Corolla.

  • Ghost

LOL SAAB at 0 sales. They really need to stop talking about their products competing with Audi/BMW.

    • Able

If Audi or BMW almost bit the dust I’d imagine their sales would die too…

    • Wayne Kerr

Saab’s range is basically upmarket Euro front wheel drive cars in the 50-100K range without any real prestige and they don\’t do anything particularly well.

      * Similarly priced BMWs, Audis and Mercedes offer more luxury, prestige and quality.

      * You can also get cheaper non-prestige cars with more equipment and performance.

Also, Saab is such a low volume seller that their cars are lumped with Holden dealerships (being a GM product). Now the distractions from all the Holden vehicles in the showroom isn’t going to help Saab sales.

In conclusion, Saab is royally screwed by the competition and must sell at a massive loss to earn sales.

    • D

Hummer actually has died but they still managed to sell 14 cars.

    • ABMPSV

You would not laugh if you worked there.

  • Steve-Poyza

How is it that Ssangyong are selling so well? How did they possibly top the likes of Dodge, Alfa Romeo, Skoda, Chrysler and Saab? Like sure these car makers don’t sell very well but they deserve to sell more than Ssangyong. Even though Saab is having all it’s problems at the moment, the uncertainty of the brand and having like only two models on sale they still deserves to sell more. Ans what about Skoda? They have some really nice cars at reasonable pricing. Those 115 clearly know nothing about style…

    • Jo

Ssangyong are selling well because they have heavily discounted their fourbies. See weekend paper for an idea.

Not sure of the quality of the Ssangyong’s. Are they as good as Kia/Hyundai?

    • Matt

Exactly what I was thinking. I would be very embarrassed driving one of the ugliest cars ever made… (take your pick of model, they’re all pretty bad)

  • ChineseDriver

Great Wall sold 500+ cars, nice!

    • Jake02

      Hopefully those people don’t crash…

    • ABMPSV

Nice untill you have an accident in this car. In US is banned because of Head Injury Criterion (HIC)is over 700. If it is over 1000 at accident you got permenant brain injury. For the GW figures are 1137 driver 732 passenger. Good luck.

      • Fred

Where do you find the information? Can you please provide a web link? I am thinking about buying a Great Wall ute. Great Wall has no intention to sell cars in US. So why is it banned? What I learn from CA is that Great Wall cars have already passed the Europen safty standards and are allowed to sell in Europe. But it would be good to know more about the Great Wall utes. I saw plenty in my area.

        • blitzkrieg

GW motors have a 2 star crash rating.

          • http://Audi Robj

I’m really confused about who would buy a GW??? Do they only care about low price?????

          • eclipse

I have seen many gw utes in my area ,certainly there is market for them and potentially other chinese car makers,i would interested in driving one of those but before that i wont comment on its performance or safety.for those who bashing chinese cars i dont know where is ur arguments based, maybe you won’t even lay your finger on any chinese car in your life time?

        • nick

Please do not buy one! People are drawn in by the low price. Build quality is terrible. You’d think they’d give the best ones to the press but another site tested one which had huge gaps between trims in the interior. Safety is also terrible with only a 2 star rating.

Buy a 2nd hand Triton still under warranty!

        • ABMPSV

First look on ANCAP website second type in Wikipedia Head injury criterion and you find info about why 700 is max in US. A value of 700 is the maximum allowed under the provisions of the U.S. advanced airbag regulation (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 2000) and is the minimum score for an “acceptable” IIHS rating for a particular vehicle.[5].

          • Fred

Thanks for the information. I think there are many factors to be considered when buying a car. I have a family member who got serious injury in a recent car crash. He was driving a ’5-star’ rating family sedan with 6 airbags. The only right thing we can do is to drive safely and carefully on the road.

My local council recently bought 15 GreatWall utes. I saw them parking at the council carpark.

          • nick

If the car was anything less than 5 stars he would have been killed…

          • cfc

If he wasn’t driving a 5-star car it’s likely he would’ve been killed.

        • Ian K.

yes, they have, but have a look at the results of crash tests, almost nobody buys them (if we speak about educated people). And even if you only drive 30km/h and do not have an accident, who wants to smell the Chinese plastic interior.

    • ADLover

      Oh Yes,
      Kick Hyundai’s ass soon !!!!

      • jinsei

ADLover, Great Wall kicking Hyundai’s ass?

        30年 Hayai!

Well before GW kicks Hyundai’s ass, Toyota’s top place will be surrendred to Hyundai/Kia. In 2002, they said they would be one of the Big 5 automakers by 2010.

Nobody believed but look at them now; they’re the world’s largest automaker in operating profit and 4th largest in units sold.

Seems quite hard for GW to even get near their ass, doesn’t it?

    • Valet Dabess

yeah i hear great wall has 1 star safety rating

  • Alexander

The Hyundai i30 outsold the Toyota Corolla? Wow…

  • ABMPSV

Should be two sale figures one for total number of cars sold and other for private buyers than we will know where we put our hard earned money. I want to see it!

    • CJ

Mazda is still the highest seller in private sales ie, non fleet.

      • Shak

Im not criticising mazda here, but they dont offer cars in the fleet categories at competitive prices. In general fleets dont want to pay that bit extra.

        • Simon

They dont want to compete in the fleet market

          • Shak

Oh yes they do. Any company would love the publicity of having a car in fleets which is the countries top seller. Holden can happily claim they have the countries best seller. This spurs people to go and see the car. Which leads to more sales. Its just that Holden and Ford and Toyota can afford to discount for Fleets, where as Mazda only puts their prices up.

        • Andrew M

Mazda pretty much dont discount full stop
Thats why you can be assured of a good resale

Its still quite an achievement that they can still put it in the top 5 consistently with out the fleet attraction

  • Shak

Assuming the car buying population in this country is about 8 million people, and about 90 000 cars were sold this month, i would like to know if anyone on this site actually bought a new car this month?

    • Frenchie

      My dad did, Holden Cruze.
      My father-in law, Holden Ute.

      • Shak

Nice to know. Its just that i had a weird thought that even through the GFC, people still had the cash to buy cars. BTW how does your dad like his Cruze. Mine is still spot on. Runs superb, very efficient, and the seat heaters are so nice in the early morning.

        • Frenchie

He loves it, so does mum. Going to take it for long drive on weekend up some hills etc. Only been driving it to work 5-10km local traffic. He says it has plenty of power for his needs. Still alittle bewildered by all the functions (technologically challange my parents).
Been a patient man, order Cruze back in November, delivered April.

          • Shak

Just one tip for the hills, if its the manual he will hate it, if its the auto, definetly teach him to use the tiptronic sport mode, as its the only thing that will help on the hills, Mines a diesel so im fine with it on hills, but if you dad got the petrol he may need a bit more oopmh up hills.

  • Fiesta ECOnetic

I think ford need to lift there game. Some heads should roll at head office. Something is not right.

    • Andrew M

      Heads do need to roll,
All I know is it isnt the heads of the product department

    • Neil

Personally, I hate the advertisements. “Who’s smarter now?” doesn’t really cut it during a period in which sales are only just starting to recover. They need to be far more aggressive in the manner they market their vehicles. Ford US is a great example.

      • Andrew M

Who needs a new marketing department?
        Ford of course……

        • Matt

          lmao

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au Mick

The Falcon is now at No.6 on the ladder…..hmmmmm. Will it scrape thru to 50? Hands up those who think it will make 55? Few years back I nearly choked on my VB when I saw sales figures showing it at No.3 beneath Commodore and Corolla. Now its at number 6? Earth to Ford:- time for a complete rethink.

    • smokin’r32

I blame their marketing department, their ads lack impact and are rarely played. Holden’s ads are pretty much the same but you’re bombarded with them so frequently they’re hard to ignore. So either get a more creative team or pay to have them aired more often

    • ABMPSV

If you look at the top 10 best selling cars small cars slowly taking over. Reason fuel getting more expensive, small cars getting bigger, cities getting more crowded, mid size cars now nearly big as big ones, engine technology…and maybe I left out few thinks. I think people still want big cars but since 1970′s the trend is going down.

  • nick

This is really worrying for Skoda especially considering a large proportion of those 80 sales would have been Octavias for the Europcar fleet. I would really hate to be a Skoda dealer right now.

Don’t get me wrong I think Skoda make some very good cars. But with sales that low you wouldn’t really want to buy one. The dealer network isn’t extensive enough and I’d be worried about being an orphan. It’s been here for 2 1/2 years and sales have not improved at all. I just can’t see it being here for another 3 years.

    • History buff

SKODA poor sales? It must be the “Gallipoli Curse”. To see, pls google out: SKODA + GALLIPOLI, or GALLIPOLI + SKODA.

  • toxic_horse

I am suprised Suzuki has sold more than KIA.

    • fourl6

you do have a very good point, especially considering Suzuki only have 6 models compared to Kias 8, we’ll see what happens when the new sportage appears…

      • Frenchie

Two different people in my small caldusac have bought the swift (in past month). Both young ladies (early 20′s). When the cars accelerate up and down the caldusac they have a good exhaust note!

    • Robin Graves

Kia still has a badly tarnished image from the early model carnival with the Rover engine. They dont have any more issues with the newer Hyundai-based Carnival but anyone who heard about the old carnival would be very dubious I imagine.

  • toxic_horse

    Ford TV adds are pathetic.
Look at the territory add with the little kid who is jealous of his neighbour.
What parent gives a toss what car there 8 year old likes.

And the other add , I think its a Focus. With voice control stereo.
If voice control is the only thing they can think of to base there whole advertisement on then there is a serious problem. I can’t even remember what car it is advertising, shows how bad it is.

    • fourl6

      its a mondeo :-)

      • Shak

Its actually advertising the new Mondeo Titanium model. You would think that Radar Cruise would be more attractive than voice control that can be activated by a Dog barking.

        • cfc

That’s the difference between Holden and Ford. Holden have a lot of terrible cars but their marketing team could sell ice to an eskimo. Ford on the other hand beat Holden with all of their cars except for sales. All comes down to the ad. Ford have gotten better with the frequency of their ads but the ads aren’t right for the cars.

Have a look at the BA Falcon ad on youtube and compare to the FG. The soft guitar for the FG XR6 just isn’t right. As for the Mondeo, Shak you are absolutely right, there are so many other features that Ford could advertise with the Mondeo but they choose the voice control.

          • Shak

As i am a fan of the local industry first, then Holden, i will admit that at the moment Holden do not have the best cars in class, but they aint the worst either. And its not the frequency that sells. Its the fact that Holden only say the good things in theie ad’s and play off of them to the unwitting public.

    • Robin Graves

And the ditsy woman looks like she is OD’ing on valium, shocking advert.

  • cfc

Maybe Skoda has full intention of staying in Aus. But when they are only selling 80 cars per month, many of those to Europcar, the dealerships won’t last long here.

  • ABMPSV

Do not worry wait for new models coming. Fabia, Yeti. Very good cars. In Victoria was only 1 dealer today is 8. Every start is a hard one specially in Australia where the competition is tough and for a brand from Europe which hardly anybody know but everybody critisizing who bad is it. People should test drive before they make any comment. Skoda Octavia 1.8TFSI, 2.0TDI, RS and Superb all very nice cars and selling well in Europe and China.

    • Shak

      We aint Europe and China.

      • Tomas79

Just a matter of time before the loss making, foreign owned locals, call it a day and pack it in… Then the market will be exact like in europe…

        • cfc

I think all Skodas are good cars but when there are 8 dealers in Victoria alone (I estimate 30 Victorian sales in March, maybe half private) three to four cars per dealer isn’t enough. Whether Skoda decides to stay in Aus isn’t the point, they need dealers as well.

We are looking at a Superb at the moment but we’re going to get a G6E because I can’t see Skoda being in Aus for much longer. Even if sales do start to pick up Australia is only a small market so Skoda won’t really care if they pull out.

We had a problem with a Renault in the 90′s, the dealers abandoned us. Being a Renault not many of the local mechanics would service it and we had to search all over Melbourne to get it service. It was made worse by the fact that it spent as much time in the mechanic as it did on the road.

      • ABMPSV

Just an info. Skoda was the only car company last year which sold more cars. Every other car companies sale was down. I am talking here worldwide sales.

        • jojo

So what….Skoda is now in it’s 3rd year and sales are still sleepy. Buyers are staying away from the showrooms and if it wasnt for Europecar placing fleet sales the sales figures would even more dismall.

I still see the old Octavia in the local dealer. They just move them around a bit from time to time…Ghostown Dealer

  • jackle9inc

anyone know when the new great wall models are coming out? very intrested.

    • cfc

      Why are your contemplating suicide???

      • cfc

        *you
