Following earlier reports, Volkswagen has officially announced the formation of its specialty Volkswagen R GmbH tuning division which will be dedicated to producing sporty exclusive models from the VW stable.

Its vehicle portfolio already includes the two new top models, the Scirocco R and the Golf R as well as the dynamic R Line design packages and luxurious Volkswagen Exclusive items.

The responsibility of development, implementation and sales of these unique models will now fall solely on Volkswagen R GmbH.

“Our vehicles contribute to the emotionalisation and growth of Volkswagen brand,” explained Ulrich Riestenpatt gt. Richter, General Manager of Volkswagen R GmbH.

Volkswagen states that this move responds to the increased global demand for individualised vehicles with contemporary sportiness and exclusivity.

The Volkswagen R GmbH employs a staff of more than 350 at its headquarters in Warmenau near Wolfsburg, Germany.

just give us 5 or so body kits to choose from when we buy the damn car

    I like the R version of VW’s. Golf is excellent. 2liter, 199kW, 350Nm, 250km/h and 5.5 sec to 100km. Perfect.

The Australian Golf R has been detuned because of Australia’s climate, a la the Audi S3. It will actually be rated at 188 kw. Strangely, however, it doesn’t go any slower….

well they “say” the car won’t go slower but in reality the car will be slower. the audi S3 also claims to do 0-100 in 5.7 seconds. no one has physicially tested a 0-100 anywhere in the 5s for the 188kw S3 in AUS. it just can’t be done. again the 5.7 claim is based on the euro model.

        MOTOR magazine did a 6.4 0-100 in the S3

real world example my friend just lost in a short race to a Golf R32 in his 188kw audi S3. and the golf gets from 0-100 in about 6.5 seconds. we were all surprised. i was always suspicious of Audis claims. They can’t be reproduced in reality. Holden’s are famous for this too. 4.9 second E2 HSV. not even possible. Not even if you tried 24/hrs a day 7 days a week for 365 days launching constantly could you pull this time.

don’t expect this Golf R to get in the 5s people if that’s one of the main reasons you are buying it.

When you have a range of 2.0 litre engines all with turbo, changing outputs to suit marketing needs is dead simple.

The various 2.0T variants are sold with 147KW/155KW/168KW/188KW/199KW and beyond, with torques from 280NM to 420NM or so.

Not sure why the R division needs 350 people, at least not in the tuning division :)

Expect to see Golf R tunes of 235KW/440NM and buzzing around a suburb near you with no external difference.

Too hot in AU? Maybe so, but what owner would race their car on a 40 degree day for hours on end – nobody.

Hmmm I wonder if this has anything to do with increased infomation sharing with Porsche ????

If there was ever a car that needed performance tuning,it would be the Golf.
This news must be music to the ears of all the posterior kissing VW fanbois.
