2010 Toyota Rukus urban utility vehicle announced for Australia

By George Skentzos |

Toyota Rukus Review

Toyota Australia has announced the addition of an all-new model into its local line-up to be known as Rukus, which will arrive before the middle of the year.

Based on Toyota’s overseas offerings from the Scion stable, the Toyota Rukus will be an urban utility vehicle which boasts aggressive and dynamic styling.

Toyota Australia’s marketing manager Scott Thompson admits that the Toyota Rukus won’t be for everyone, but it is a step in the right direction as far as adding some excitement into the range is concerned.

“Rukus is designed to be different: it’s not for everyone. It’s a bit like Vegemite: it’s an acquired taste,” Mr Thompson said.

Like the Kia Soul, the Toyota Rukus will be offered as a blank slate with buyers able to add a raft of personal touches to make their car stand out.

“That might involve wild paint jobs, funky wheels or other ideas, limited only by the imagination of owners – and what’s legal.”

“Potential customers have told us they want this style of car. We’ve listened and we’re responding.”

  • Des

Looks like they got their design inspiration from SsangYong. Seriously butt ugly.

    • gman

No one with the gift of sight will find this attractive let alone buy one

  • ricflair

    that is U G L Y it’s ugly

  • Jon Leong

If it looks like the Toyota bB in Japan, Then I am going to put down my deposit.

  • Martin

Something tells me Toyota wouldn’t have even considered bringing this to Australia if KIA didn’t bring the Soul.

    • Golfschwein

Hmm, yes, just like the success of the Pajero years ago gave rise to the Prado.

    • KM

      Couldnt agree with you more…

Eventhough the Soul looks a little better…

    • Aim

The soul is also a major copy of the Citroen C3 Picasso

      • Selurs

Erm, no it’s not. The Picasso and the Soul were both announced at the same time, while in concept form the Soul had been around for a good 2 years before that, so who was copying who? Just because two vehicles appear similar does not mean they are directly referencing each other.

        • Hung Low

I think Nissans Cube is to blame for these right angled designs!

      • Paul

        Message to Toyota.

We want DIESEL. The idea of a small efficient wagon with \”bling\” is great.

But you are missing on plenty of sales due to not offering diesels in your cars. Look how much the European cars have grown in Australia recently.

This car looks like it is built for a good diesel engine.

        • Willa

I would have to agree with the diesel request i currently drive a rav 4 and this is my secon rav 4 i have thought of upgrading to a newer rav but with the thought of not having a diesel i have not yet! i dont want to go away from toyota they are my fav! i do like the new Rukus though!!

  • Golfschwein

I would take this any day over the abominable Lexus CT200H, funnily enough. It’s not classically pretty but at least it knows what it is. But if I had to take this, I just wouldn’t. I’d go a Roomster, instead.

  • RdS

aaah.. awesome! toyota bB/xB/Rumion has finally come here. dunno why we never got the previous generation xB and nissan Cube here. they’re quirky, but the rediculous dimentions and exterior shape make them quite roomy and practical inside…

    • Baddass

Yeah they do look practical, and maybe small businesses will adopt them like ‘Hitman’ did for the PT Cruiser.

BTW, I hope the wheels in the pictured car aren’t Mr Thompson’s idea of funky wheels.

    Ruck-us
    A disturbance; a commotion.

Knowing the level of success Kia has had with Soul it will be interesting to see how the Aussie market reacts to a similar offering from Toyota.
If Toyota attracts more attention to this market and the pricing is too high then it would be favorable to Kia Soul sales.
I look forward to seeing how it plays out…….

    • Golfschwein

They could have left the ‘c’ in.

  • G man

It would be embarissing to recall somthing that plane

  • Howard

    Crap Design..

    • safety first

      It’s a Toyota????

  • gary

This is a very japanese car, they have very tight parking spaces and roads in many cities, even kyoto, so residents would have to buy a car that is not wide(so you can park your car in front yard with mirrors folded and still only 10cm left each side). To maximise internal space, you have to go for boxy shape.

So, why would austrlian buy this?

    • Jon Leong

Given the same question, then why would Australians buy a Mini copper or Fiat 500 ??

      It’s jsut a Style thing.

That said, more people would appreciate the style of Mini’s and 500′s then this Toyota.

      • gary

The answer is in your last line. People buy mini for the styling and unique driving experience. What would this toyota offer australian customers? It is clear most people wouldn’t think it is stylish, a lot of people say it is ugly, don’t seem to be great to drive. And it does not offer much space while we all have parking space that could fit a falcon. Then, what is the point?

  • david jones

far out that is ugly and unfortunate naming as well. Looks like a fridge on wheels.

  • Shak

Hahahahaah. He called it exciting. Then again this is Toyota so a dead rat would be exciting for them. (at least it wouldnt suddenly accelerate away from you.

  • Duckula

They only place your ever going to see these things is at outdoor sporting events with toyota written all over them, or at train stations giving away radio station giveaways… cos that’s the only way they will be able to offload them, as a promotional vehicle write off… and they keep trying to convince us they arent the ‘whitegoods on wheels’ car company….

  • swampdawg

Rukus or RecallUs, either way its useless, not even a decent load carrying wagon rear section. Pay Toymota money for that, no chance.

  • jay

The only thing exciting about this fridge is that it may uncontrollably accelerate against your will…

Do not mention Toyota and exciting in the same sentence unless FT86 being made and available for sale is included!

  • http://www.insidetorque.com IT

That’s so ugly I physically crynged and clicked away.

  • Ken

The KIA Soul looks heaps better than this. The Toyota will sell more than the KIA as everything Toyota makes attracts the same badge snobs that don’t believe looking at other makes. What about the huge Blind Spot with that rear pillar?

Toyota copying KIA with the “Like the Kia Soul, the Toyota Rukus will be offered as a blank slate with buyers able to add a raft of personal touches to make their car stand out.” Love it, Toyota copying KIA.

The white colour definately makes it look like a “White Good On Wheels”. That is sooooooooooooooo ugly.

    • Adelover

      >Toyota copying KIA with the “Like the Kia Soul…
      That’s not true at all.
Toyota released bB in Japan and xB as Scion bland in USA in 2004.
They were huge success, then this is second generation model.
So, actually Kia copied Toyota’s concept as usual.

Personally It’s good for small business or people need extra cargo space.
I think Toyota should bring Tundra Pickup Track here or change Hilux’s face like Tundra, before this debut in Aus market.
this face is not my cup of tea, but not bad at all.
There is a new word in Japan “Busa (orBusu) kawaii” does anyone know about it?
      It become popular in Japan.

      • Ken

What are you talking about? Toyota did copy KIA with the “Start with a blank slate” statement that KIA used on the Soul. I never said in my comments that Toyota copied KIA in car design. Learn to understand what your reading before replying.

  • nick

Can someone please tell me how this has ‘aggressive and dynamic styling’?

    • Jack

It makes people who view it aggressive. Their actions become dynamic.

      Seriously, spell it backwards: sukuR

  • Captain Nemo

A big sticker of a ice/water dispenser on the front doors of this baby would look awesome. Especially a white one

    • My Cars Called T-Rex

I think the ice/water dispenser is one of the Funky options.

  • scottwheels

The vehicle might not get a negative response from it’s intended niche market when the “accessories” are more clearly defined (funky duco and phat rims aside). I think that’s where the success of this vehicle will be realised. Just as the iPhone is does the same things as most other smartphones hardware, it owes it phenominal success to clever marketing and the app store, which sold it’s billionth app last year. If Toyota can market this car as a fully customisable platform, they could open a new market.

    • My Cars Called T-Rex

      So its a latte car.

  • Valet Dabess

you could fit a box into that perfectly

    • Millatime

      Yes, a coffin…

  • AnchorMan

This is fantastic – I am going to buy one, and as suggested it can be optioned up as you choose. I will get one with 10m of heavy chain attached and use it as a mooring. I just hope the fish dont die laughing when they see it.

  • http://caradvice.com.au auto

i bet there will be a recall on this wasted pile of metal, they spelt the name wrong!

  • john

Just googled one and had a look at specs. Plenty of room inside if your after that sort of thing. The fuel tank is 53 Litres and the one i looked at had the camry 2.4litre motor in it. Not for me. It was also $25000 US dollars plus on roads.

  • Fernando

Should I go to Harvey norman to test drive this new product from Fisher & Paykel?

    • Adelover

500 days interest free, Not bad ha ha ha.

  • The Real Car Fanatic

Toyota designers have been seriously affected by this recall to come up with something this ugly

    • Bob

This car has been on sale in Japan and US for around 2-3years now, well before the recall. I do agree that Toyota need to change their design department though, Kia and Hyundais look much better these days. The name is ridiculous and it’ll be interesting to see if it sells. I would hope the accessory list has a heap to choose from and not cheap looking add-on kits that make it look riced up in the end. I wonder how the FJ-Cruiser will do when that arrives here late in the year. Thats another car Toyota is hoping to boost their image with.

      • Tomas79

I doubt the Fj Cruiser will ever make it ti australia, as it;s just a less practical version of the prado. But i reckon they should have brought the urban cruiser instead of this…

        • matt

i just read somewhere else that the FJ is comin here…. another ugly.. UGLY car that i dont think the aussies will like at all, image search FJ cruiser… *shudders*

  • HJP

Believe it or not this car will still sell very well regardless of its styling.

  • Karl

Does it come in stainless ste………oh wait its a car!

  • The Oracle’s Teacher

    Disgusting.

  • The Oracle’s Teacher

    Ugly. Are the designers high?

  • Robin Graves

Reminds me of that airbus freight plane the beluga whale

  • http://www.taktka.com saeed

    thaaaaaaanks

  • MB

I waited more than 10 years.
original bB in Japan is released more than 10 years ago.
Rukus is based on US Scion xb second generation which is US original.
    (bit bigger than first xb)

    • bert b

This will sell because its a toyota and its practical & roomy it has been in america for years and sells very well over there!

      • matt

the taurus sold well in america to….

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au Farn Carn

This thing should be called the ‘Fukus’ because that’s what Toyota think they can do to us with designs like this!

  • joe

The Japanese bB 2005 to current will be available in Australia within 6 months as a low volume import. I think this version will have it all over the Ruckus.

    • Mick

Totally different car. The Bb is built on the NCP platform (Echo, Vitz et al) and this on the Corolla, Rav4 platfrom.

  • http://Caradive jordan

gosh bad comments some of you…….like they SAID THEY WANT TO BE DIFFERENT

  • Sam

It seems everybody find it ugly .. except me. It is different and bold. It is definitely a special taste. While it would be impossible to “convince” one that it is not ugly but it should be appreciated for it is: different and bold.

  • Cheappiglet

It’s so sad to read all those people who mock this car. They just don’t know how to appreciate it. I’m glad it’s arrived because I’ve been waiting for it and thought about importing it’s cousin Toyota bB over. Despite the crappy name, I would like to get my hands on way of these and personalize it. First thing I’ll do though is to rip off the Rukus badge. For those who say that Toyota copied the Kia Soul, go and do some research first because Toyota had these type of vehicles way way before Kia even existed. The Rukus is pretty much the same car as the American Scion xB which was derived from the original Toyota bB.

  • http://dba07626@bigpond.net.au Dianne Barnett

It is refreshing to see a car that challenges the new car (dull) market. RUKUS is different, it has style, safety and is a contemporary classic. I can hardly wait to see it on the streets in Australia.

  • Alan

Box like car? Yes and I love it. Basic, simple, roomy. I’m sick of all those wanky looking cars that wankers like to buy these days.

  • Jebus

Gay than aids, cum on a beard and a stick up the ass all combined

  • GJO ESQ

When I saw the link to the video of the “new Rukus” on YouTube I thought to was a clever joke mock up. I couldn’t believe that such an ugly and undynamic vehicle could be conceived by any serious car designer. I even searched on Google, “Is the Toyota Rukus a joke?” Alas, it IS real! What a JOKE!!!

  • Davis T Bear

I would usually say Toyotas are craptastic – but I was driving past a car yard in Canberra today and saw a black one of these bad boys out front. I had to do a double take because it actually looked pretty good. I drove back and stopped for a proper look. I had not seen or heard about this car before today, and I hate to say it, but this car is pretty sweet in the flesh. Oh dear…

  • pete

    GAYYYYY!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/siongkin Kin Loo

its basically a corolla rumion. a 2box vehicle under the corolla name. i know many peoples think that it might not be that nice looking or powerful but its made in japan so its worth every dollars u pay. to some peoples, they might love special cars that’s never been seen on aussie roads so this is a good vehicle. another point, if u pull the rear seats down, you can also put goods like a minifridge, coffee table and drive the vehicle like a minivan

  • Paula Woodley

have just bought a Rukus – - – there will be a rukus if Toyota doesnt get its paints right. love the car but am not colour blind and cannot get Toyota to get their paint colours right.

    • Sue Barber

what colour did you buy? what was the stuff up? I’m looking at buying one. I like high seat position and can get in and out withour hitting my head like in Dualis and mitsubishi ASX.

  • Sonia

  • James

If u want to see uglier, go look at a Toyota Prius.
