Volkswagen has released the latest generation of the CrossPolo at the Geneva Motorshow. By taking the good looks of the Polo hatchback and toughening it up with black plastic around the wheel arches, across the sills and the lower parts of the doors and both front and rear bumpers. At the front the bumper has a honeycomb air intake and a silver trim at the bottom. This gives the car a rugged look and hints that there is some under body protection which there isn’t.

The CrossPolo also gets the trademark silver roof rails and 17 inch two tone wheels.

With an option of six engines, three petrol and three turbo diesel the CrossPolo caters for all needs. There is a 1.2 and 1.4 litre petrol engine, as well as the 1.2 litre TSI with turbocharging. Also available is a six speed manual or seven speed DSG automatic.

In the back the CrossPolo has 1.04 cubic meters of cargo space available when the back seats are down.

Also on the Volkswagen stand is the Polo GTI, almost a scaled down version of its larger sibling the Golf GTI.

With 133 kW of power available from the turbo and supercharged 1.4 litre petrol engine the hot hatch can reach 0-100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds and has a top speed of 262 km/h.

262 km/h? Is that a typo or are they serious?

The old Polo Gti was an awesome car so I’m sure this new one will be even better. It looks fantastic as well.

IMO both of these models look better than their Golf equivalents and are just more appealing to me. But then again people like what they want.

Totally agree. Both the Golf and the Polo are great packages. Awesome engines, interiors, safety, the lot. But I just feel that the new Golf is as bland as it is great. Probably the best car you could buy with $30k, but gee it’s bland. The new little Polo on the other hand just looks so much more interesting. It’s got soul, something I think the new Golf is lacking. If I was in the market for the Golf, I’d seriously consider the Polo first.
