Skoda Superb Estate hits UK showrooms, Australia to follow mid-year

By Matt Brogan |

The new Škoda Superb Estate has gone on sale in the UK over the weekend, and with prices ranging from £17,715 to £26,245 (AUD$32,175 to $47,670), is set to become the best value for money, most luxurious and most practical car ever to wear the famous Škoda badge.

From its bold, chrome-framed grille and distinctive headlights to its subtly curved, coupe-like roofline, the Superb Estate’s design is well balanced, and very stylish.

The new Škoda Superb Estate also boasts the biggest load capacity in its class offering 633-litres of cargo area with the rear seats in place, or a massive 1,865-litres with the 60:40 rear seats both folded flat.

Trim levels and engine specifications mirrors those of the Superb hatchback with three model grades, three petrol and three diesel engines offered. Two transmissions, manual or DSG automatic, linked to either front- or all-wheel drive, are also available.

The Škoda Superb Estate will go on sale in Australia towards the middle of the year. Full specification and model line-up will be announced closer to the launch.

Excellent car. I was in Europe in December and one of my friend bought one. He loves it. Even in a German car magazine this car beat the Mercedes E class!!!

  • RdS

nice car. lets hope it gets out here at a good price. with a bit of advertising, its got potential to do well…

terrible promotional pic though.. hurts my head just looking at it..!

  • Andronicus

Just doesn’t look the goods to me. I’m sure its lovely but the look is just a bit….beige.

    • Will

      Andronicus:

The machine looks great, far better than any contemporary Oz knock up for example.
Your comment is meaningless. What does, ‘look the goods’ in your eyes?

This would assert your interpretation of a bar rather than otherwise reflecting just the utterances of a troll.

      • Classic

I’m pretty sure it’s like this Will:

“Just doesn’t look the goods to me” – Andronicus’s opinion.

“The machine looks great, far better than any contemporary Oz knock up for example” – your opinion.

Both equally as entitled as the other to have an individual opinion. So how about you and every other self-righteous brand-lover on this site just get over yourelves.

        • Will

Classic, your assumption lacks basic analysis. I declare the Skoda is a good looking machine in the company of others. Andronicus does not even utter what he/she considers a good looking machine is in the class. His/her statement reflects the interpretation of a troll.

Your statement, ‘so how about you and every other self-righteous brand-lover on this site just get over yourelves,’ is both reductive and patronising.

          That is unfortunate.

        • Andronicus

          Thank you, exactly my point.

        • Simon

          Well put!

      • Andronicus

Will – Dont be so touchy. You might not agree with someones opinion but no need to make an arse of yourself.

And if you really are interested I would find something from Volvo or even the Mazda 6 wagon a much more attractive vehicle than the Skoda. Like I said in my opinion, im sure its lovely but I find it a touch boring in the looks department.

      • Hung Low

Sorry Will a SS Sports wagon trounces this for visual stimulus! well externally anyway, teh Holdens interior is hideous.

        • Will

          Hung Low:
I respect your liking for the aesthetics of the Sportwagon, however -

The Sportwagon is not innovative in looks. It is an interpretation of the 300, and as stated at least the 300 has a diesel option. Both Octavia and Superb Combis’ represent style that is readily reflected in sales world wide. They look fantastic.

Lets take the Berlina Sportwagon with that peaky SIDI engine. It allegedly develops 290nm torque at 2900rpm, with power rated at 190kw. The kerb weight of the machine is 1789kg.

The heaviest Superb Combi is 1746kg. Max troque is 350nm at 2500rpm with power rated at 191kw. With the package you also get AWD and DSG, leading European styling and dynamics with superior engineering and quality of build.

          • Tomas79

            Exactly Will!!

          • Hung Low

I was talking about styling yet you bring in drive trains etc. Do you neglect that buyers interested in performance have the option of a stonking 6.0L V8?
Tell me why is this Skoda wagon design is innovative over all other wagons Will? At least the 300c and Sportswagon are more uniquely styled!
Compared to the hideous looking Superb sedan, the wagon is a better looker but put it this way………if Aussies had a choice in a prize give-away between the Superb and a SS Sportswagon, even with the lower tech, build quality etc, at least 90% of people would still choose the Holden over this! That is the current reality for Skoda!

Thomas79: should we call you boots? because thats the only part of you we see hanging out of Will’s butt!

          • Simon

Hung, SS commodore is not direct competition for the Skoda. The V6, perhaps. I get that you don’t like it – styling is subjective. That’s the great thing about choice. You get what you like and other’s will do the same and I hope there is always lots of choice so we can find what appeals to our individuality.
I get that you don’t like Tomas79′s comments. Again you resort to abusive posts. It’s a shame because you often have valid, useful things to contribute. Tomas79 can also make irritating comments but “Exactly Will!” is hardly abusive.
Will’s initial comments are also subjective, he was comparing the Superb to the 3L Sportswagon which is also an unfair comparison. As for the rest of his statement – it’s just quoting figures.
Hung – take a breath dude. VWAG is not all evil despite it’s imperfections and fanbase (or imperfect fanbase!).

          • Tomas79

Funny Hung Short, that so far the Skoda Superb totally smashed the crammodore in every review/comparisson in Australia!!

  • Mal

I love the look of this thing! More interesting than a Passat wagon, plus I can’t help but think of the A6 Avant when you look at this Skoda in side profile.

  • http://caradvice euroguy

IMHO Skoda could sell this on looks alone – especially with the trend going back to estate / wagons of late. It is owned by VW auto group, so will be well screwed together and finished nicely. No reason why it shouldn’t sell like hotcakes here in Oz.
Will they still sell the Scout AWD as this also has AWD option available?

  • wat

heard somewhere.. what car is that? a skoda.. a what???? thought it’s that chinese thingy, looks like one..lol

    • jake02

      Attempting to bee humourous?

    • ABMPSV

Your knowledge about cars is very limited. THis is the second oldest car company. Go on Wikipedia and check it out.

  • Kris

Externally it’s similar in size to the Ford Mondeo apparently, but Skoda have a knack for maximising interior space with their cars, hence the massive boot capacity. Decent looking for a wagon too, hopefully it sells well for them, they are a well built car and deserve to do better.

  • bryn

Great looking piece of kit. I took an Octavia for a test drive and came away greatly impressed. There is one glaring problem with them though. If you purchase a Skoda, does that automatically turn you into a Skoda fan boy? I can’t think of a more irritating breed on the internet.

    • ABMPSV

JUst buy the car and enjoy it. In England many years ago was a lot of Skoda jokes but now….if you got a Skoda is very highly rated!

      • bryn

totally agree, great cars. It’s just there owners seem to be weird anorach types who love to crap on about them on the internet and use words like “dinosaur” a lot. At least on this site.

        • Simon

Bryn, are you the Bryn of CS fame?

  • F1MotoGP

Nice car. Good engine choice too. 1.4 , 1.8, 3.6 liter petrol and 1.9 & 2.0 liter diesel engines. Nearly 4.9m long 1.817 wide, 3.6 liter engine,191kW@6000rpm and 350NM@2500-5000rpm, average fuel economy 10.2 L/100km and this is a 4×4 car. Prices is UK starts from £17,715 to £29,075.

  • Steven

I hope it pulls them out of oblivion and into the light of the Australian market because at the moment it isn’t loking good. I took a very keen interest in the product as it was launched and as the new line up came into effect. The sales however have been deteriating slowly, especially now the VW lineup has been prices the same or cheaper?!!

vfacts has them down last month for 17 cars in Vic and by all accounts it will be half again this month as everyone has slowed down since the ‘tax’ incentives have stopped. It is a real real shame, the product is very good, in soem cases better than the VW equavalent but no brand recognition here in OZ

Hopefully this will be a life line but pricing is everything, even though this is bigger than the Passat, if they were the same price (or as it stands for the sedan now, more expensive) then we can’t expect it to do well at all really. throw in the fact they try and keep themselves a secret i think if it succeeds it will do so inspite of itself.

    • Baddass

I don’t believe all Skoda’s problems can be blamed on not being known here, anymore. I think the cars they make just don’t suit the tastes of a lot of people here. Not that they are bad, just the buying public isn’t interested.

  • Steve

Badass, To say that the Australia audience doesn’t want the Skoda product is downright idiotic. How can you want something you don’t even know exists. As the next young mum you can find what she thinks of Skoda and i would bet money on it she would stare at you blankly.

Ask a colleague at work what he thinks of the Skoda superb, he wouldn’t have a clue if you were even speeking english.

The product sells 780,000 units annually arounf the globe with 5 models in varying combinations in its range. They are massive numbers, they do most of those in Europe, Germany and China.

are you trying to tell me that the Australian audience is so much more suffisticated than Europe that it would choose the Mazda 6 over the Skoda all day long. Give me a break, it is the biggest load of dribble i have heard in a while.

Skoda don’t let people know they exist and what their about and for this they will continue to remove themselves from the market. Latest vfcts for Jan 2010 show a total of 48 new vSkoda’s sold of which none were Superbs. all they have to do is registered one wagon and they have increased their sales 100%.

On the bright side, it couldn’t get any worse.

    • Baddass

“are you trying to tell me that the Australian audience is so much more suffisticated than Europe that it would choose the Mazda 6 over the Skoda all day long.”

I’m not sure exactly what point you are trying to make with this comment, so I’ll let it pass.
And by your reckoning, at the very moment people start hearing about Skoda, they want to buy one? So it’s definitely not a matter of personal preference then? Even when they know more about Skoda, chances are they will stick to a more well known brand like Ford, Holden or Toyota. I know plenty about Ssangyong, Jeep and Mahindra, but I’m no closer to buying one. Face it, the market mainly swings towards large rear-wheel drive cars, SUV’s and small hatches. A large, front-wheel drive, semi-limo like the Superb isn’t what appeals to a large sector of the market (despite it being a great car).

  • http://Caradvice onepoppa

Skoda overseas is very much a workhorse brand. In many countries there are large numbers of Skoda police cars (many UK forces use them, possibly instead of Volvos) and many taxis. What the Australian distributors need to do is get people to buy them – that means forgetting prestige and selling them into rental fleets – Europcar took on many non-mainstream models – and fleets generally so that they are both seen and driven. Exposure is the name of the game. There is really only one way to do this – price. They have to buy their way into fleets by selling or leasing them to fleets at prices they cannot resist.

Once people experience them they will appreciate their worth.

  • boughtaskoda

we just bought a skoda superb – why – well we drove a passat and a skoda ( almost the same car) on a 37 degree day – the superb has a sunroof that has s solar panel in it that drives extractions fans – wow the car was no hoter inside than outside – some achievement for a car sitting all day in the sun
