2010 Mazda2 hatch & sedan face-lift heads for Australia

By Matt Brogan |

The new Mazda2 hatch and sedan will land in Australian showrooms from May highlighting a revised look and increased equipment levels.

Since its launch in 2007, over 35,000 examples of the Mazda2 have been sold in Australia, making it one of the best selling light cars on the market.

Joining three- and five-door hatch models this year is the Mazda2 sedan, a car Mazda hopes will attract a whole new range of buyers.

“Having listened to customer feedback and studied the light segment very closely, we believe that the new Mazda2 sedan offers the potential to engage with a whole new set of customers,” said Mazda Australia marketing manager, Mr Alastair Doak.

The new Mazda2 sedan offers an impressive list of features that includes inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, power windows and power mirrors – not to mention a 450-litre boot.

Safety comes courtesy of front, side and curtain airbags, ABS brakes and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD).

Under the bonnet, the Mazda2 range will continue to be powered by a 1.5-litre 76kW petrol engine which will be offered with a choice of manual and automatic transmissions. Fuel economy figures are as low as 6.4L/100km.

  • Innova

Well the Fiesta sedan come to US, and we have Mazda 2 sedan.

  • Jazrod

The sedan looks shocking… And I’m already not a fan of the current ’2′!

    • sammo

Yeah i know the proportions are all wrong!
Give me the hatch any day.

      • Baddass

Still a pretty good hatch-to-sedan conversion, in the scheme of these things. A bad example would be the Echo sedan and original Focus sedan.

      • lazybones

Seriously cannot see the point in a small sedan. The boot is practically useless, and the dimensions of the car make is look like its a lard ars*. The hatch gets my vote.

        • Shak

Umm its 450 litres. for a small sedan that is remarkable.

        • lazybones

450 Litres is no good if you can’t get a bulky item through the open boot door. Then how big is the hatch with seats up then seats down.

        • maximark

I\’\'v noticed these following models all have both hatch and sedan; Yaris, Jazz (honda city?)Fiesta,Holden viva,Barina,Hyundai Ascent..etc.. so it\’s all about marketing competion between car makers I guess.

  • G

    No ESP??

    • Adam

      It’s optional.

      • Shak

In this day and age all cars should have it mandated, but from the end of this year they will have to have ESP to sell them here.

      • The Other Brad

Thought there was some law that forced all 2010 (or maybe it was 2011) cars to have ESC.

  • mmmmm

other sites are reporting the dropping of the 3 door and the ‘probable’ inclusion of ESC

  • CrustyTheClown

    Made in Japan or Thailand?

    Trip computer?

    5 speed auto?

    • vid_ghost

Add two Electroic remote keys! to that list :)

  • crouchy

Another victim of the horrific year that 2009 was for motoring… Now the the GFC has passed through, lets hope things start to look up..

  • vti07

AFAIK Mazda 2 facelift models will be sourced from Thailand. 3 door hatch is likely to be dropped from the range.

I think Mazda will do best this year. Mazda will be responsible to run market.

  • Whitbomb07

Where’s a diesel for this thing? Maybe have a chat to Ford and borrow one from the Fiesta ECOnetic.

As for the sedan, the rear reminds me of a Proton Gen2……..

    Regards

    Whitbomb07

    • mmmmm

Mazda would need to chat to peugeot to get the fiesta diesel

      • Get real

Why wouldn’t they just talk to the equal engine design partner FORD, who already have ties with Mazda?

    • Classic

Geezes, does every car need to have a diesel option? I’m sick of hearing it – “where’s the diesel, where’s the diesel?”

If they can’t build a small, fuel-efficinet petrol engine for a car this size then God help them.

  • Valet Dabess

plz plz plz plz plz tone down the smile of the 3 cause i kinda wana get one

    • Whitbomb07

      Wait for the i20.

      Regards

      Whitbomb07

      • The Other Brad

Or the Polo due out in March.

Waiting for the i20 isn’t going to help the huge grin on the Mazda3.

        • The Other Brad

          Err make that April :)

  • Ken

What’s with that stupid smiley face front? How long before they stick an update on the Mazda 6 with an even bigger mouth? I laugh when I see the new Mazda 3 drive past with that stupid front. I like the build quality etc on a Mazda, but I could never buy one as they look ugly front on.

KIA and Hyundai even have better designs these days than Mazda. It must be contageous as Subaru are just as bad.

    • CrustyTheClown

That’s one of the reasons why i went for the Lancer and not the Mazda3

1/ Could not get over the in-your-face-look front end.

      2/ 10,000km service interval.

3/ NON capped service costs [charge what they like!].

4/ Very poor rear leg room, worse than a Golf and thats bad.

      5/ Only 2 front air-bags as std.

      6/ Around $1500 more than a Lancer.

      • MazMagic

….and I think I will keep my original Mazda3 SP23! Saw a new one in the car park the other day and I couldn’t even stand the back – looks like a Toyota!!! The old one looks 1000X sporty!

As for the 10,000km service – “A stich in time saves nine”!!!! 12 months is good but as the car gets older, 6 months is needed to pick up little issues which could turn into big issues!

NON Capped Service Costs – There has to be a catch. There is no free lunch! But again, Mitsu Warranty is pretty good.

Leg room – Compare a BMW 1 Series – that’s is really bad!!!! The 3 leg room is OK – not as bad as one thinks.

$1500 More: I think the Mazda is more sporty, so you are paying for it. Lancer is sporty only on top of range models (EVO etc..). Also, better plastics are used.

2 Airbags Standard: I do agree with you here. Safety 1st. In fact, I think all manufacters should make safety a non option.

As for the 2, I neither like it for hate it. But don’t like it being made is Thailand. I think Mazda might lose sales (like Honda).

  • ahmed

when a mazda news cames out i read the comments all off u guys a jealus

    • Ken

Go back to school Ahmed. Is basic English so hard for you? I actually got lost trying to read your comment.

8 new cars in 12 years? Someone tells lies I think.

  • ahmed

MAZDA NUMBER ONE DONT BE JEALUS U HOLDEN AND FORD LOVERS

    • http://n/a cletis

      you spell it J E A L O U S
By the way both ford and holden suck.

  • The Oracle

We have a Mazda 2 five door in this household for the younger drivers and it is a great little car and with the safety pack optioned, it has everything you need in a car. However, I am glad we didn’t wait for the sedan. I notice that there are no profile shots, but even in the views shown, the proportions look wrong. You would be amazed how much you can get in the hatch if you pack it carefully.

  • MaxMazda

As an owner of the original model 2 I went to get a new one after the old was totalled last year but instead moved up to a 3 as (1) New 2′s hold nowhere near as much storage as the the original model ((2) incidental storage space, pockets etc reduced on newer models (3) passengers much more cramped than original (when in back seat my head hit the roof when leaning back before hitting headrest) + (4) got far better discount on new 3′s than was offered on even newer 2′s making the upgrade price around $2700 – bargain.

  • The Real Car Fanatic

Sorry Matt, you got it wrong, the three door has been dropped for the sedan, all specs will have six airbags and DSC as standard and they will be built out of Thailand so expect a drop in price.

    Thank you for your time

  • erneztp

i dont think the mazda2 sedan will be popular in australia. just look at the sales of honda city and yaris sedan, their hatchback sibling are way more popular. expect a competitive pricing, unlike the ridiculously priced honda city.

  • franz chong

Definetly looking at one of these as a 5 door hatchback and possibly buying one as I have a budget to play with plus a very tight garage.I am currently driving a Series 1 2006 Nissan Tiida which has been great but the mileage is getting up there so hoping to trade up before the year is out.I have also been looking at the Series 3 Tiida and the Ford Fiesta so will see how things go.

Great car, I think it will do very well…
