2011 Ssangyong C200 spy photos

By Matt Brogan |

Ssangyong is still alive as these photos of the C200 prototype shows.

Ssangyong first planned to show this car in production form at the 2009 Frankfurt Car Show, but due to some economical problems and now being under bankruptcy protection all of the development has been delayed. Several weeks of strike action at the factory didn’t help either.

The C200 is aimed against Skoda Yeti, Toyota RAV4 and such, and will probably come with three engine options, one of them as hybrid.

Expect to see the Giugiaro designed C200 in all its glory during late 2010 as an MY11 model.

That rear looks like a captiva….

    • toxic_horse

Even ssangyong can’t be that ugly.

  • sammo

Wow, even covered in black it’s already looking better than the current range of S’Yongs!

  • Hxus

C200!!! SOunds/looks like the updated Captiva (Holden/Chev/Daewoo) as it was codenamed C100??

If it’s looks like anything else Ssangyong makes they should keep it covered even after it goes to production.

  • Duckula

Thats just a craptiva in a horse blanket!

  • Baddass

I hope Ssangyong hasn’t toned down the styling so much that it becomes hopelessly bland, like the Koleos. A bit of individuality works wonders in this market.

    • Robin Graves

Not when its so butt-ugly it needs a paper bag like the Stavic and a few others

  • Shak

I dont think this is a S’Yong. For one why would it be cold weather testing when it wont be sold in snowy regions, and the rear looks a lot like the previous Captiva?

    • Captain Mainwaring

Shak, what the Hell are you on about? Doesn’t it snow in Korea? And maybe they have aspirations of selling this in Northern Europe as well, even if they don’t sell many in Darwin.

    • Baddass

So if the rear end looks a little like a Captiva, it can’t be a Ssangyong? Very good reasoning. We already know what the new Captiva looks like (and it’s not like this) and we have seen the C200 concept. And this is definitely a S’Yong.

Cold-weather testing is almost compulsory these days, because if a car is taken in snowy place, regardless of whether it is sold there or not, it needs to be able to perform well and not break down. Hence why the completely snow-unsuitable, new Citroen C4 is undergoing tests in the snow.

If it’s like previous Ssangyongs, it will be sold in Australia, and one of the uses of a 4WD in Australia (in fact, one of the more justifiable uses :) ) is to get to the snowfields in Victoria and New South Wales. It’s also pretty chilly at times in Tasmania. I assume they also sell Ssangyongs in NZ, where the conditions can definitely be icy and there is no shortage os snow in winter.

    • hungus

Well… maybe because it snows in Korea where its developed and made?

It went down to something like -30 degrees in around January in some parts

      • http://www.insidetorque.com IT

        Negative 30?
Quick, run for the hills and stop driving.
        Global warming is coming!

I wonder if this one will come with VIN numbers. I was talking to a panel beater last week and they are impossible to match the paint on as there are no recorded VIN’s. Pretty sad in this day and age. If you buy one (and are that stupid) don’t crash it.

That’s if of course this is a Sangyong. I think CA have made a boo boo.

    • safety first

Pretty sad state of affairs when people can’t figure things out. No one puts Paint Code on Comp plate or vin #…… Try looking at the build plate and you will find everything you want… (oh and I’d probably check the credentials of the Panelbeater)

  • UMWAHT

Im still perplexed as to why someone would buy a ssangyong

    • gtdolly

I can tell you why because I have one. It’s simple…. I am the sort of person that wont buy something unless it’s a bit different. There is lots of us out there.I wouldn’t buy from the big manufacturers (GM, FORD Others) as they just churn out light bulbs. Most people wouldn’t know how good Ssangyongs are because most haven’t owned or even driven one but are happy to comment on then. And don’t think it’s because i’m cheap…$50k Australian dollars is not budget buying.

Bit like cutting your nose off just so “your not like everyone else.” There are plenty of ther cars in this market that have a proven track record, different looks, some semblence of resale value…….

        • gtdolly

I’ve had no problems so what’s your point?? Have you owned one?? I doubt it!! And as for proven track records, they all have their problems. Even Toyota.

  • Nightshifter

Spied? who was bored enough to go spy on Ssangyong heh

  • Des

Is it covered up cos it scares children??

  • Pieter Beimers

Talk to people about Ssangyong don’t have a great opion.
Then talk to someone who ownes a Sssangyong vastly different.
    I like it and own a 06 2ltr Kyron.

Pity their are not more dealers

I agree with you Pieter. I was a former Rexton owner back in the UK and had to sadly sell it before moving down under to live. I had no problems with my Rex, it was a very good drive, comfort level was the top spec leather. kids loved the space too. used to tow very well. excellent MPG and a good solid reliable engine from a Merecedes background. too many good things to mention let alone the price tag compared to other manufacturers. My wife had a big crash in ours pulling out of a junction and wrote off another car with only a few scratches and a headlight damaged on ours, the other car was bent like a banana. i will own another rexton when i have got settled in oz. best all round performance and bang for your buck. nuff said people.
