Ken Block to take on the WRC with Ford

By George Skentzos |

Ken Block has handed in the keys to his usual ride – a Subaru Impreza WRX STI – and stepped into a rally-spec Ford Fiesta as part of a new deal with Ford which will see him compete in the Rally America Championship as well as the FIA 2010 World Rally Championship.

As part of the newly formed Monster World Rally team, Block’s entry into the WRC is history in the making as he becomes the first American to contest the world stages as part of a multi-year program.

“Not only is Ken a cult hero to our consumers through his gymkhana videos and other stunts, the fact that he will be the first American racer to compete in the 38-year history of the World Rally Championship is truly impressive.” says Monster Energy President Mark Hall.

Block’s expectations for the 2010 WRC season are modest, saying that he would be “dreaming” if he promised a podium finish in the near future.

“I will be going head-to-head with the greatest drivers on the planet. And sure, I will be giving it my all but my main objective for 2010 is to develop into a competitive driver for 2011 and beyond.” says Block.

Instead Block says he will focus on developing his ability for a successful future in the WRC for 2011 and beyond.

For the WRC, Block will be racing in a Focus RS prepared by M-Sport, the company behind all of Ford’s World Rally efforts.

“Ken has been instrumental in elevating the public awareness of rallying throughout the world with his multimedia exploits, particularly in the U.S. which is a key global market and an area where WRC has yet to reach its full potential.” said M-Sport’s Managing Director, Malcolm Wilson.

Back in the States, Ken will be racing in both the Rally America Championship and X Games in the all-new Ford Fiesta, prepared by Olsbergs MSE, wearing a familiar livery combination featuring his regular sponsors: Monster Energy Drink, Dirt2 and Castrol Edge as well as the skateboard footwear company Block co-founded, DC Shoes.

Well I guess this will sort out how good he really is.

Rally America – I thought they would call it Rally World like they do with their other sports that only include Americans but they call it a world series. Reminds me of the Team America movie where everything is so many miles East or West of America.

At least he’s being realistic by admitting that ‘he would be “dreaming” if he promised a podium finish in the near future.’
Good luck to him.The little Fiesta looks great!

Kudos to Ford for giving this guy his dream of entering into WRC with a fully fledged RS team to back him up. Really, Really excited to see how Ken performs over the coming years in two of my favorite cars.
Rally America, then WRC…Fantastic to see the exposure this will give a Rallying

Is that fiesta awd or fwd like the swift rally car?

    • Philthy

It’s an s2000, 2 litre AWD. The 2011 WRC will have run modified S2000′s with 1.6 Litre turbos, still AWD.

Go Ken! He’s the best thing to happen to rallying in ages, even if he is a seppo :) .

This is going to be very interesting. Its one thing to do impressive stunts but the concentration and focus that must be required to complate a world rally event must be a totally different thing. Good luck dude…

The stunts aren’t all that impressive. If you watch his drift videos carefully, you’ll see there are multiple tyre tracks. That is because he had multiple attempts at each slide and then kept the recording of the successful attempt – something any average drift competitor could do in a RWD vehicle, let alone a rally-spec AWD. He is severely over-rated and it will be amusing to see him thoroughly spanked by Euro drivers who have a lot less marketing power and a $hiteload more talent.

The guy is not over-rated, just check out his Rally America results. Regular podiums over the last 4 years aren’t easy for anyone in rallying let alone someone that only started in 2005!
The Gymkhana videos were done for fun and promotion of his sponsors, don’t take them too seriously, but they are great to watch!(Especially the bloopers)
The only reason he will be beaten by the European drivers is because they will be familiar with the Stages. The time to watch him will be on any brand new stages, which will be a better comparison. (Same goes for Kimi Raikkonen this year).
Personally I really hope he is a bit of a freak and gives the Loeb/Hirvonen two horse race a bit of a nudge.
This guy has a great life!!!

The bulls**t stops when the flag drops.
we can all wait and see.

It says he’ll be competing in a rally spec Focus RS but it pictures Fiesta’s? Is this for different comp’s or???
